Cardinals reaching the age of 80 are no longer able to vote in the election of a new Pope How ageist! The Pope himself is 82 (83 in April). So you can BE a Pope at 82, you just can't vote for one.

So you can BE a Pope at 82, you just can't vote for one. Once you're Pope, you're more or less expected to die in office.
OTOH, having a Cardinal get sick during a conclave would be problematic ... so they impose the age limit.
