Putin Urges Young People to Follow St. Francis Model

Cheboksary, January 26, Interfax - Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin told Chuvash students what qualities he liked in people and why he was against epithet “great.”

The head of Russian government visited the main Chuvash University on Monday, the Day of Russian Students. He talked to students and answered both serious and personal questions.

Speaking about the qualities he likes in people, Putin mentioned “decency and tolerance.”

At the same time, the Prime Minister did not agree when a foreign student called him great.

“I’m still alive, thanks to God, and I believe it’s early to perceive me as some empyreal magnitude,” Putin said.

According to him, “all of us in our own place as St. Francisco should every day spud the lot given to us by God and then we will succeed.” “Greatness or not greatness – it will be afterwards. Future generations will decide what I have really done,” the Prime believes.

OK, the translation here is a bit rough ("spud the lot"??) but I thought this was newsworthy from the point of view of a Russian president publicly urging young people to imitate the saints.

Wouldn't happen in the US, of course.

I wish that we had a president that was as intelligent, cunning and patriotic as Putin.

For all Putin’s faults at least he loves his country. That’s more than I can say for our Dear Leader.

Are we missing something with Putin? Is he a good leader from the perspective of the Russian people’s interests?

I agree completely. He always puts Russia's interests first and foremost no matter what.

"I agree completely. He always puts Russia's interests first and foremost no matter what."

I don't give him quite that much credit; I think he always puts Putin's interests first and foremost. By coincidence of history, economics and Russian politics, what is best for him and his nation have more often than not overlapped, but having said that, I would still rather have an American leader with the political acumen of Putin rather than the selfish ineptitude of Obama.

I suspect Putin personally despises the humility of St. Francis, but he can still convincingly sell it as a virtue, which would ultimately be to the benefit of his society.

Actually he looks pretty good. Note deep heels-down.

OT there was a thread on Putin doing some karate/taikwon-do moves with a black belt and in that thread was a shot of somebody being thrown in a demonstration at the White House for Obama, and Obama was shrinking back like a little girl as the guy was being thrown.

It’s an amazing picture. Obama is shrinking away with a silly laugh and Michelle is standing tall and strong. Tried to find that thread just for that picture but couldn’t.

I've seen the picture of Obama shrinking back...What a woosh..

Putin is a typical Russian jock...and likely excels in many categories.

My heritage is Russian and Putin is built the same as my father was...including the no chest hairs...

Bush claimed he saw into Putin’s soul and concluded “he’s a good man who loves his country.”

More than we can say about Obummer.

The Russians have a lot of their heritage from the Mongol hordes — racial/genetic to an extent, but heavily cultural and socio-political.
