I have to agree with his view that in this fallen world even the virtue of compassion is twisted. Too many Christians have fallen victim to this pseudo-compassion. Those that want to kill the death penalty for those that have committed heinous crimes is a perfect example of pseudo-compassion. What about compassion for the victims of these malefactors or compassion for those that will be victimized? Mercy to criminals is cruelty to the innocent.
One wonders if a warped sense of what really constitutes the compassionate response, combined with an irrational insistence on "self-esteem", isn't the reason we have so many of those "heinous crimes" you mention in the first place.
