It would seem that the author is quite sincere, as most people in his situation tend to be. I believe you are correct in regard to the similarities between Gnostic doctrines (particularly secret knowledge, etc) and the author’s religious beliefs.

As to peer review, I suspect most church historians would not take it as serious scholarship. But that is an opinion on my part.

Having worked in Early Christian history, I would agree with you.

The questions historians ask along these lines usually involve Gnostic beliefs and the development of Catholicism (the ‘heresy fights’) rather than their relationship to New Testament doctrine.

Perhaps I shall send this to Peter Brown for his input. I am sure it would be interesting.
