Cardinal Roger Mahony spoke out Thursday and launched a new Web site about immigrants. Mahony sees anti-immigrant hysteria and its impact on those he calls brothers and sisters. "Scapegoated and put into categories and not seen as real people," said Mahony.

The two main categories are legal immigrants and illegal aliens. Those that believe in the Rule of Law and lawbreakers.

Cardinal, with all due respect we are a nation of laws.

Mahoney should be in PRISON, as a protector of known pedophiles.

Enough said.

You have GOT to be kidding me.

Why doesn’t he go to Mexico and open missions to help the Mexicans?

As a Roman Catholic and with all due respect to Cardinal Mahoney, I doubt he’d be so passionate if the majority of the illegals in this country were practicing Buddhists.

"Mahony sees anti-immigrant hysteria and its impact on those he calls brothers and sisters. "

Stop right there, Cardinal. I'm all for immigration, and I suspect that most people are, too. I'm against ILLEGAL immigration. There are tens of thousands of people who file their paperwork and wait in line - like the law says that they should - who would be disenfranchised if the government pardons these people who clearly are in violation of current federal law.

The government has a moral and legal obligation to protect the due process rights of the people who didn't immigrate and cross our borders illegal. It's not "anti-immigration", in fact it's very PRO-IMMIGRATION.

With all due respect to the Cardinal, STFU.

Illegals bring nothing good to this country, and they cause all sorts of other problems. I would think that Jesus would teach that people should do their best to improve their own lot rather than forcefully impose the responsibility of their well-being onto other people.

Alex,

Cardinal Mahony speaks for me about the same as the Presbyterian signatories of "IOWA: 167 Iowa faith leaders back same-gender 'marriage'" speak for you.

Then maybe the United States should send troops to Mexico to secure their country from all of these drug cartels and murderers. Rather than allow them all to just come over the border illegally is nonsense!

Help them to be proud of their country. Doesn’t seem that their country is helping them at all. Why is it us that always has to help?

Boy, this issue is infuriating! They probably never should have called it illegal immigration and called it exactly what it was. Invaders - we are being invaded from all over the world.

Ma works at city hall a couple of days a week. “Transitional Assistance” is on her floor. She had a bad cough a few years back. She tested positive to being exposed to TB. Now, how do you suppose that happened?

Waiting in line is an important step. To all those (like Obama Jr) who claim they want the illegals to go to the back of the line, remember to mention to them that the end of the line is back in their native country. If they balk at that necessary step, they have outed themselves as liars.

You are obviously an anti-Catholic bigot. /SAR

I agree 100% and he should share a cell with Cardinal Law.

Cardinal Mahony speaks for the Catholic church.

Catholic Legal Immigration Network
http://www.cliniclegal.org/about-us
Mission Statement

To enhance and expand delivery of legal services to indigent and low-income immigrants principally through diocesan immigration programs and to meet the immigration needs identified by the Catholic Church in the United States.
CLINIC History

In 1988, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) established CLINIC as a legally distinct 501(c)(3) organization to support a rapidly growing network of community-based immigration programs. CLINIC’s network originally comprised 17 programs. It has since increased to more than 185 diocesan and other affiliated immigration programs with 290 field offices in 48 states. The network employs roughly 1,200 attorneys and “accredited” paralegals who, in turn, serve 600,000 low-income immigrants each year. CLINIC and its member agencies represent low-income immigrants without reference to their race, religion, gender, ethnic group, or other distinguishing characteristics.

In 2007 alone, CLINIC provided 7,676 detained immigrants with “know your rights” workshops.

It’s sooo nice to hear a man speak with great moral authority and attention to God’s will. On the other hand there is Mahony’s Baloney.

Cardinal Mahony speaks for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles until next February. Joseph Ratzinger(Pope Benedict XVI) speaks for the Catholic Church. FReeper markomalley speaks for himself.

Clearer now?

Jesus said "render to Caesar (government) that which is Caesar's, and to God that which is God's".

This illegal immigrant problem is a government problem and needs to be resolved by government.

Well said. The root problem is twofold:
  1. A corrupt government in Mexico which is only able to exist (to the detriment of their citizens) by exporting their problems to the north.
  2. A growing culture of corruption in the United States which has an economic interest in cheap, docile labor and is willing to flout laws and bribe corrupt officials to maintain this class of "indentured servants".

The irony is that "legalizing" illegals does nothing to address these root problems, which is why that debate is a pure diversion. New legals are no longer as cheap or as docile as the next crop of illegals and hence loose their appeal as indentured labor. This is exactly what happened after the 1986 "amnesty".

Those who seek "economic justice" need to look south and help Mexico fix their own house. Cutting off the "safety valve" is essential in bringing pressure to bear on the central issue of Mexican misgovernance. Mexico knows this, which is why AZ's effrontery in wishing to enforce existing federal immigration laws is causing such howls of protest.

Ah stuff it, cardinal.

I don’t care about their stories.

I care about my country.
