The wife of a deacon recently gave a homily and you should hear what she preached.

This is some wacky stuff!
Ping.
A Deacon’s wife giving a homily. I thought Deacon’s doing that was bad enough. Supposedly Rome has been cracking down on this behavior.
That is just wrong on so many levels. Then again, she could develop that into a thesis and get an automatic Doctor of Divinity from any number of seminaries.
I think it’s called Universalism. Old heresy. Origen’s teachings along those lines were condemned by the Church.
The demons in hell will be redeemed? Well I don’t read that in MY bible.
This is crazy!
First of all, lay people do not give homily’s. I don’t think it matters if it is a man or a woman.
And what kind of a statement is that? Even those in hell will be redeemed. I don’t recall Christ saying that! I think the Priest needs to be spoken to.
**Do I say anything to the priest?**
In this case I would bypass the priest and go directly to the Bishop.
The Deacon can give a homily, but never anyone else other than the priest of Bishop!
ONLY a validly ordained priest or deacon may give the homily!
According to tradition, Christ went into hell after dying on the cross but before the resurrection to free the souls in hell but demons are totally different. The theology, at least in a Catholic tradition, is angels were given free choice but once they made a choice they can never go back. So Satan and all his other fallen angels are irredemable.
From what I understand that is not true. A deacon can give a homily under extraordinary circumstances. Although a church I went to had deacons the homily on a regular basis and that is wrong.
:) too humorous for words.
That would be Sheol not the Hell of the dammed.
It would be hilarious if people's eternal souls weren't on the line.
You should say something, lovingly of course, to the priest and then to the Bishop. The priest was out of line. The deacon’s wife was out of line and the deacon was likely out of line for this delivery of a “homily.” Additionally, the statement about the demons sounds like the assertion that hell is empty and that all will be saved which is heretical, I believe. Were it true then there would be no reason for the Church beyond its function as a social service agency. Christ did not set up a welfare program.
Pretty interesting the exact definition of “hell” is varied from as you mentioned Sheol to hell of the damned. Sounds like Luther believed Christ went to hell as in Satan’s abode.
Also variously translated as Hades, or the abode of the dead.
NOT Hell, that abode of the damned created for the devil and all his angels.
Actually, it isn't. It's perfectly legitimate for a deacon to preach the homily. (Some pastors and bishops don't permit permanent deacons to preach regularly, and that's fine, too, but the church herself doesn't restrict it.)
It is absolutely not permitted for any layperson (nun, deacon's wife, me, Protestant minister, etc.) to preach the homily at Mass, or even appear to do so. If they're going to speak from the ambo, they should do so immediately before the final blessing.
It is indeed a heresy, known by the tongue-twisting Greek name of "apocatastasis". Origen believed it, which is one reason he's not "St. Origen".
