Presbyterians to address hot debate topics at assembly
Minneapolis Star-Tribune ^ | 7/3/10 | JEFF STRICKLER, Star Tribune

Smiles and congenial chit-chat abounded as the first of an expected 2,800 people started checking in at the Minneapolis Convention Center Friday for the Presbyterian Church USA's general assembly. But how long the pleasantries will last is in question as the denomination hunkers down to spend the next eight days hashing over several highly contentious issues, including same-gender marriage, the ordination of gay clergy and a committee report on the Middle East that many interpret as being anti-Israeli.

Almost lost among the hot-button issues is a matter that likely would have dominated any other general assembly: a proposal to completely change the church's form of government. Add the normal activities at such conventions, including electing new officers, and it doesn't appear that there will be much free time for the delegates, who represent 2.14 million Presbyterians in 10,751 congregations.

I didn't know that PC-USA was even still considered within the realm of Christianity.

It was just 11 months ago that the Evangelical Lutheran Church in American (ELCA) met in the same building for a contentious vote on accepting actively gay clergy.
I wonder if Bishop Hanson warned them to check their lightning rods.

Let’s hope they finally address their clergy sexual abuse problem. Continued assertions that it is only a Catholic problem denies justice to the victims of Presbyterian abuse that studies show is more than three times more prevalent the the more publicized abuse by Catholic clergy.

It’s a gentle apostacy, this PC USA. Greying post-menopausal women in sweaters, dark polyester pants and loafer shoes, who like to smile sweetly, give a few pennies to international aid organizations, and make quilts for the homeless shelter.

No one has noticed that the gospel was replaced a generation ago with a socially conscious activism and Peale-ish positive thinking. No one noticed the tens of thousands of young families who just stopped coming and are down the road at the church that still believes and teaches the Bible and just bought the empty Circuit City store.

Die quietly, the church of my childhood. Fade away in the sleep of doctrinal uncertainty and soft leftist political thought. Others, who still believe, will carry the torch which you laid down a century ago.

they should start by realizing that “gender” is a grammatical term, used to reference nouns and pronouns. The word they are looking for is “sex.” It is not a dirty word, so it is okay if they say it.

Could you point me to the source of this ? Seems impossible because there are not altar boys or that many Presbyterian deaf homes or orphanages ..or clergy

12% of the 300 Protestant clergy surveyed admitted to sexual intercourse with a parishioner and 38% admitted to other sexualized contact with a parishioner. When Mentor Becomes Molester (Alexa Smith)

Thats 30 or 40 men..and this is not child abuse;; it is certainly sin but it is not homosexual sodomy on kids.. BIG DIFFERENCE..If we counted all the priests that also had heterosexual affairs I suspect the number would be 50 to 60 %

I personally know of 5 priests in the diocese I live in that left to marry women they had affairs with.. broke up one marriage and two nuns left the convent.. to marry the parish priest.. If I know this from our old neighborhood I can only guess the full extent..

"Just want to add they did not take a VOW of celibacy"

A vow of celibacy is simply a vow not to marry. All sex out of wedlock is fornication. Anecdotes are interesting, but hardly conclusive. Besides, it is hardly a defense to claim that protestant clergy are sometimes fornicators who have broken their own and others marriage vows and is not a denial of child abuse by Protestant clergy that most certainly does happen. It is not ideological, it is human sin and all institutions comprised of imperfect humans will fall victim to it.

I suppose if they share anecdotes about ice cream and bug bites they can conclude that the rules about calling others liars and making posts about other freepers even though "they" remain unnamed they just lie and it won't matter even when caught.

A vow of celibacy means no porn , no masturbation..it properly practiced means no SEX period

Celibacy is defined as the lifestyle of someone who is voluntarily abstaining from all sexual activities (also known as “abstinence”), possibly remaining unmarried all his/her life. It is often incorrectly used to refer to a mixed, an involuntary, or even temporary abstinence from sexual relations – the word “celibacy”, when it appears by itself, is properly defined as being a freely chosen state of practicing sexual abstinence, usually in the context of an unmarried state.

I cannot understand why you present yourself as an expert of Catholicism after having admitted to failing to understand even the basic taught to children in the Baltimore Catechism and continue to demand that Catholics and the Catholic Church adhere to the secular definitions you dig up on the internet. The Church is very thorough and defines the terms when it uses them.

The Church defines Celibacy as the renunciation of marriage implicitly or explicitly made, for the more perfect observance of chastity, by all those who receive the Sacrament of Orders in any of the higher grades.

The secular definition of 'celibacy' is often confused today with 'chastity', which means "abstaining from unlawful or immoral sexual activity" (Oxford English Dictionary).
