Among Catholics, Obama job approval rating decreases to 50 percent

A new survey examining religious believers’ approval ratings of President Obama shows that about 50 percent of Catholics approve of his presidency, down from 67 percent in his first six months in office. Catholics make up about 22 percent of the U.S. population.

The Gallup Poll survey found the president’s approval rating among non-Catholic Christians, who make up 55 percent of the U.S. population, had fallen from 58 percent to 43 percent. His already low approval among Mormon respondents, who represent about two percent of U.S. adults, fell from 43 percent to 26 percent

About 78 percent of Muslim respondents approved of the Obama presidency, down eight percentage points from when the question was first asked. Second to Muslims were atheists, agnostics, and members of other non-Christian religions, who comprise about 13 percent of the U.S. population. While about 75 percent of these respondents approved of President Obama at the start of his term, their approval declined to about 64 percent.

Jews were the religious group third likeliest to approve of President Obama, giving him 61 percent approval. This too is a decline: in January-June 2009, their approval rating of the president was 77 percent.

Overall, 48 percent of Americans approve of President Obama’s job, down from 63 percent in the first months of his presidency. Gallup claims that its survey of over 276,000 adults claims an overall margin of error of plus or minus one percent.

Purity tests are rarely part of polling, and it sure wouldn't only apply to Catholics, it goes for everyone.

And I think it would be a valid demographic. Note I am not asking for a "purity" test but a "participation" test. The reason being is that I think, regardless of confession, there would be distinct differences between those who actively participate in their religious practices versus those who "culturally" identify themselves as part of a religion.

Look at that Protestant category, they don't even break out the largest non-Catholic church in America, or the third, or the fourth and so on, much less apply a purity test for it.

And I would, once again, think that this would be a valid measurement. No doubt, those who identify themselves as Southern Baptist would be far more conservative than those who identify themselves as American Baptists. Those who identify themselves as PC-USA would be far more conservative than those who identify themselves as OPC or PCA...LCMS would be far more conservative than ECLA...and so on and so forth.

You two don’t realize that boomers and older are the anti-Obama vote, it is the younger than boomer voters where the left wins.

There are a lot of “social justice” Catholics among the clergy, and they dominate the Catholic schools and the charitable organizations. Under Paul Vi the “AM church” was in virtual schism. John Paul managed to turn things around to a degree and Benedict is now continuing his work, but the liberals are still around in large numbers, trying to mask their infidelity as best they can.

I think that you will see the opposite, as the Catholic church loses it's older whites, it will become even more liberal.

Speaking as a younger white Catholic...you couldn't be more wrong. The most liberal priests are in the 50-75 year old category. The most liberal parishioners are also in the same demographic.

not to mention supporting those who have a historical record of cutting off the heads of, and enslaving Christians of every stripe...

They do some polling on church attendance and voting, but they don’t break it out by which church.

With what has become of the Catholic Church, it’s hard to attend and participate in the church and still feel “Catholic”! To paraphrase...I didn’t leave the Catholic Faith - the Catholic Church left me!

I thought that you meant the congregation, not the leadership, but won’t the leadership become more Hispanic too, like the congregation?

These Catholics that supported obama should no longer call themselves Catholics. Obviously, they don’t share the same belief system as the church.

They need to form their own little religion. How about “Secular Catholics?”

It makes my head want to explode. How can 50% of Catholics support a politician who is so far left on life issues that he supports infanticide?

Because 54% of Catholics voted for him.

Maybe they were intentionally distorting and took a survey of the Notre Dame faculty, though, that might get them to 50%.

I'm getting old and my mind isn't as sharp as it once was :-) but wasn't it Norte Dame that allowed Zero to cover up the statues and crosses when he gave a speech there?

Not just Hispanic. The priest in my church was imported from Uganda.

Interesting little tidbit.

Most illegal immigrant Hispanics are not practicing Catholics.

Most are "cultural" Catholics (i.e., they would identify themselves as Catholic but rarely, if ever, set foot in a church).

We have a large Hispanic population in my town (growing to be almost 1/4 of the population in recent years). Most of the newcomers are illegal immigrants. Out of the three Catholic churches in town, ours is the only one with a Spanish-language Mass. It is so sparsely attended that it is in the small chapel in the neighboring Catholic high school rather than using the church.

There are actually more Hispanics attending pentecostal congregations of various varieties than the Catholic churches...at least in the area where I live. The pentecostals are making huge inroads into that area.

But, still, most of them don't ever set foot in a Catholic church for one reason or another.

Most legal immigrant Hispanics are as conservative, if not more so, than whites. (They are far more likely to attend Mass than illegal immigrants...far, far more likely)

Yes, believe it or not. Most are pro-marriage, anti-homosexual, pro-work, anti-welfare. At least the ones I know.

I thought that you meant the congregation, not the leadership, but won’t the leadership become more Hispanic too, like the congregation?

Actually, we have a hard time finding Hispanic clergy -- and we see that as a big problem. Although the demographic of priests ordained locally are mostly white with the appropriate portions of black, Hispanic, or Asian folks mixed in, most of our "imported" clergy come from Africa. And I'm here to tell you that they are extremely conservative. I have, in fact, never heard a liberal African (i.e., from Africa) priest preach in an American church.

No, the real danger comes from aging clergy and religious who were formed in the late 50s through the 70s. And it's only a matter of time before they die off.

Most illegal immigrant Hispanics are not practicing Catholics.

I would like to see the polling on that, and at some point Catholics need to decide how many Catholics are really in the world, because on FR, it seems that very few Catholics actually exist sometimes.

I still can’t get over it. When I attend Mass I still keep looking around at people wondering how my fellow parishioners could have voted for that man.

Sad as it is, I think Obama was elected out of a need to “stick it to whitey.” I believe this is the reason the Catholic numbers are so high: the Catholic Asian community and Hispanics fell prey to this need. Now add in all the kooky liberal white Catholics and you’ve got quite a group.

I’m very sad many of my fellow Catholics didn’t see a vote for Obama is a vote for abortion.

Knowing the faith helps. CINO’s are real.

As a former evangelical protestant, even I wondered why it was the Catholic Church that the Left and the marxists in the world so feared and hated. Infiltration became the game, naturally, especially in the most powerful nation of the world.

The hatefilled media celebrates the fall and error of Christians, and gives amplified voice to the CINO’s, but for Christians to join them against Christians, or point fingers at Catholics who are in the same fox hole is a real accomplishment for both the Left and the invisible enemy.

It has been difficult to watch the liberal elements have a field day in the American Catholic Church, but I believe the pendulum is swinging back and, in our lifetime, you will see a more traditional, orthodox Church again.

This is a time of purification for our Church. In a way, we are blessed because we have the chance to stay faithful in a time when it is very difficult. Persevere until the end. We are journeying together on the Way of the Cross!

He had them covered up at both Georgetown as I understand it, which had no right to do so based on their charter. Notre Dame had him speak in a different setting than Georgetown, so I'm not sure whether they did the same or not. Both places should never receive another cent from Catholics until they can be reorganized, have new boards put in place, and have their faculty totally replaced. At this point, they've become a tool for the CINO crowd and nothing else.

These two examples prove as well as anything you could find that the left taking over educational institutions was a huge factor in us all getting to the horrible state the nation is in at this point. It's not just their denying the Faith it's substituting indoctrination for education. Taking control of education back from the left has to be very high on the list of what we need to do to recover our Republic or anything else we do will be a holding action. Regards

You will note that the report does not distinguish between weekly Mass goers and those who are Christmas/Easter Catholics (or those who just call themselves Catholic and haven't been inside a church for 20 years). I wish that polling would look at that. Pew did after the 2008 election:

Numbers of Catholics who take their faith seriously and support Obama must be far lower now.
