From
http://catholicvote.org/discuss/index.php?p=10368This is not the popes first public encounter with a canine. He also likes St. Bernards:
Indeed, affection for St. Bernards seems to run in the Ratzinger family (this is the popes brother, Monsignor Georg Ratzinger):

He does, however, draw the line at certain dogs. For example, he isn’t fond of Helen Thomas, Rosie, Joy, Whoopi or Hillary.

St Bernarders aren't my fave dog (the amount of drool is more than even I can stand, and you have to be careful about temperament) but those look like nice doggies.
The 'brandy keg' says "Otto has love for you all."

Thanks for posting the wonderful pictures Pyro. I had not seen pictures of Pope Benedict in some time and he is looking older.
Something I never thought of before is ‘could the Pope have a pet?’ or have any of the Popes had pets and why not? I can’t ever recall hearing of a dog or cat at the Vatican.
