Saint Stephen is typically consider the first martyr. He was killed by Jewish authorities with Saint Paul's participation. Perhaps you should read the Bible sometime and not comic books.

Here's a little history for you, prior to the invention of the printing press, nearly everyone was illiterate. There were EXACTLY TWO written languages that were widespread throughout Europe prior to the 15th century: Greek and Latin, the Bible was available in both (though due to cost, the average person could never afford one). What language do YOU think the Bible should have been written in? English? Too bad, it DID NOT EXIST, neither did French or Spanish or German. The FACT is that ALL literate people could read Greek and Latin, so there was no impediment.

Why do you suppose it was called the "dark ages" of history...

I'll give you a hint, the Dark Ages had been over for CENTURIES before it was called that. But the Dark Ages refers to the collapse of civilization and economy when the Roman Empire collapsed. During this period, the ONLY source of stability throughout most or Europe was the Catholic Church.
