For the same reason that make much of all the OT types and symbols. Like the sacrificial system, the priesthood, the Davidic kingship, etc, they were (temporary) pointers to the person and work of Jesus Christ. They have no importance in and of themselves, only insofar as they point us to Christ.
Then He said to them, "These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me." (Luke 24:44)If you don't make the connection to Jesus Christ, you will miss the intent of the prophecies.
The fact remains that the NT writers interpret the OT prophecies all in terms of Jesus Christ, but never in the context of national Israel.
Otherwise you are left with some very confusing ideas.
The resurrection of national Israel,(Ezekiel 37) is a total sign pointing to Christ, for Christ will cpme back in judgment to save them...
