First Presbyterian Church Installs Its First Woman Pastor
Brooklyn Eagle ^ | 2-Feb-2011 | Francesca Norsen Tate

Amid jubilant preaching and singing, the Rev. Dr. Flora Wilson Bridges was installed Sunday evening as senior pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Brooklyn, affectionately called First Church. Dr. Bridges is the 15th senior minister in the congregation’s 189-year history, and the first woman to be called as senior pastor at this church after a nationwide search lasting over three years.

Elder Effie Bynum, Moderator-Elect of the Presbytery of New York City, presided at Sunday’s animated service. The Rev. Dr. W. Franklyn Richardson, who ordained Bridges to the ministry more than 30 years ago, preached an impassioned sermon about the experience of receiving a call to ministry and taking refuge in God’s presence. Dr. Richardson is pastor of Grace Baptist Church in Mount Vernon, NY, with 4,000 members and congregations in Westchester and Port St. Lucie, Florida — and a long tradition of extraordinary preaching and music

‘But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence’
(1Tim.2:12)
Seems clear enough.

Just for the record, there are two different denominations to Presbyterianism. There is the larger much more liberal Presbyterian Church USA which supports gay and lesbian clergy and all manner of liberal political causes. This group does not trust the Bible 100% and tends to render very liberal meaning to the Bible in general.

THEN there is the much smaller and more FUNDAMENTALIST Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) which split from the larger more liberal group in the 1960s over political issues like gun control and homosexuality, as well as their treatment of the Word of God, etc. PCA members (like yours truly & family) tend to be much more conservative in all areas of life.

Though, doesn’t the PCA have women deacons?

Yes, compromise has infected most churches.

ftd - love ya bro - but my dear wife is ordained - i see male authority over her as being in line with the Biblical admonitions - #2 - Pauls context on a lot of this adds to Scripture. #3 show me a church where a woman is silent in 2011 ? - in fact NONe resemble the first century church - which was for all intents, a liberal synagogue #4 “‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.

"prophecy" - means quite clearly, teach

I guess the contention is if you believe us to be in the end times or not -

If i recall - Priscilla and Aquilla's may have been that of teacher as well- i cant recall exactly though

hope all is well - we havent chatted in a bit -

What I find fascinating about that verse is the phrase...”ON ALL PEOPLE”. It makes no distinction as to Jew or gentile, men or women, Catholic and protestant, or dare I say it, “saved or unsaved”?

Indeed, many unsaved folks over the past 2 centuries or so, particularly scientists and writers seem to have been remarkably prescient in their predictions and warnings as to the shape of man’s darkening future path....almost as if in spite of themselves they have been given “a look a head”!!!???

Just the ones who still follow scripture. Most churches are financial enterprises for "pastors" or more social club than church.

Walk into most and they either won't open the bible at all or slam it shut as soon as they do open it like they are afraid something might get out.

Paul is very careful to qualify his own advice (staying single) or cultural mores (hair length). This is a clear and direct command.

In 1 Timothy and Titus Paul clearly states that Pastors, decons and Elders must be “the husband of one wife”. That pretty much settles the issue for me.

Men were created to be the leaders. This isn’t a contest of who’s better or who has more power. This is each working to their designed tasks.

We have some fantastic women in our church who are vital to the church. They are not the lead pastor.

The Bible seems full of contradictions and inscrutable phrases. Although each time I read it something that which was not understandable to me becomes clear as day in the context of my life at that moment

I have come to the conclusion that I love my Creator in gratitude for the gift of life and I try to love my fellow man because it is my Creator’s wish that I do so. All the other stuff is subordinate relative to those two Commandments.

Accepting women preachers versus alienating many modern women and their children seems like a loving thing that is supportive of God’s creation as long as the spirit of the law and love of God as evidenced by Jesus Christ is always paramount.

The gift of faith was given to me by my mother and reinforced by the example my mother and father lived.

When I meet my Creator some day I hope that I will have to justify loving too much rather than loving too little.

We go to the First Evangelical Presbyterian Church which broke off back in the 1980s from the mainstream Presbyterians because of the liberalization of the main body, that could not be tolerated anymore by the more conservative members. We enjoy FEPC very much, and hope more Presbyterians make the jump.

A PC(USA) church has a female “minister?”

What a shock!

FWIW you are years behind the indignation shown by Prods on this board.

What about the shell fish that we are forbidden to eat. If we all read that and believe in the Bible, there is going to be a full house in Hell. I don't know why God had to even say eating anything with a shell is abominable. He must have his reason, but I see a lot of people at a Seafood restaurant sinning big time.

"...What about the shell fish that we are forbidden to eat...."

The words in the New Testament preempt the words in the Old Testament.

Thus, go ahead and eat those oysters; better yet, top them with bacon crumbles: God allows that now.
