And if God doesn’t work for him, turn to Aristotle.

I have a relative like this. He was raised a southern baptist, says by the time he was ten or eleven years old, he was having doubts, by high school he was a full fledged agnostic. We’ve gone through this over and over, he’s read the bible cover to cover more than once, apologetics like CS Lewis, etc, and remains unconvinced. He says the answers to life’s questions are unknown and unknowable and anyone who believes otherwise is kidding themselves.

Nice guy, will give you the shirt off his back, devoted husband and father, but he seems impervious. Maybe he’s not one of the elect.

unknown and unknowable

Yep, that's why they call it faith. It usually comes (is bestowed by Grace) in young childhood or after a lifetime of searching and emptiness. Sounds like Tom has noticed his car is filled with "stuff" but the fuel light is on and the gauge reads "empty".

It’s an ancient truth: Money cannot buy happiness. People will keep going on through history trying though.

He has a house in Maine, maybe he’ll run against Olympia or Susan.

DEAR TOM BRADY:

Two ways to go in my experience:

1) Continue living the life of a teenager in heat. Don't get married, play the field, you get bored, get another. Get a yacht, other water toys (girl magnets) play around Miami Beach's bikini clad babes by the truckload, non over 25 years old. Enjoy yourself.

2) Return to the Church, to God, meet your wife at mass one day, get married and have 12 children. Raise them well, so they don't end up living an irresponsible extended childhood for 40 years like you did. AND before you know it you are a grandfather and you have 144 little clones that have your good name to carry forward.

It does not matter what one did wrong, what matters is how one ends up. Remember, Mary Magdalene was a whore, and St. Augustine a fornicator. Who remembers them for that?

Could happen. I just remember him saying in an interview way back when that he would be interested in running someday, the Dems would love to have him, and there’s enough idiots out there to vote for him.

Even Aristotle had his unmoved mover. I say cut out the middle man and get straight to the good stuff.

Your relative sounds like me. I wish I could believe, but I just don’t. I am happy for those that do as it must be quite comforting. Ahh well, pray for me. Perhaps I will see the light before it is too late.

Mark Twain was the same. There’s a fairly recent biography of him that is simply heartbreaking, and a recently released collection of his private papers. He lived in despair.

I couldn’t finish the biography. Once his children started dying, I gave up and took it back to the library. Murder mysteries are more cheerful.

Not a bad start on your post reply 'verdugo'...except for the part of 'go to mass'...

There is no grace salvation in the Catholic church, and its mass continually offers 'un-bloody' sacrifices of Christ Jesus who "was once offered to bear the sins of many Hebrews 9:2

By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ ONCE for ALL TIME". Hebrews 10:10.

"For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with [Catholic] hands" Hebrews 9:24

“He says the answers to life’s questions are unknown and unknowable”

My simple question to this kind of statement is “and how do you know that?”

It seems he would have to ‘know’ something about life’s questions to know they are unknowable. It’s sad but there are always two types of ‘searchers’ for knowledge. Those that are serious and truly looking for an answer and those who aren’t serious and only looking for an excuse.
