In the 26-December-2004 tsunami, a church with 2000 pilgrims were spared.
The origin of the church was based on two other miracles.
The first miracle was an apparition of Mary and a sheperd boy. The shepherd boy had been sent to get some milk. Mary asked for milk for Jesus, which boy gave her. When he returned with an almost empty bottle of milk, the person who sent him was upset with him.
But when the bottle was opened, the milk started overflowing out of the bottle.
This was in 1560.
A Second Miracle happened in the 19th Century when a Portugese ship was spared. They showed their gratitude by building a Basilica on the spot of the first miracle. A smaller church had been built after the miracle in 1560.
Then came 26-December-2004 when 2000 pilgrims were inside.
They were all spared, but not the town around the Church.
