Fiat mihi secundum Verbum tuum

It was in 1973 or 74, I think, when a young man, fresh from a heady experience of monastic life in a foreign land, met an extraordinary woman at the beginning of her middle age, brimming over with vitality and with the love of God. She walked with long strides, betraying her youth in the mountains of Savoie. At times an inner joy would illumine her face. Her hospitable heart embraced all who came to her. The young man asked, "Mother, how do you pray?" And the Mother responded, "When I pray, I say, Seigneur je me livre à la puissance de ton amour fécond -- "O Lord, I deliver myself over to the power of Thy fruitful love."

En cette solennité de l'Annonciation prions avec la très sainte Vierge Marie: Seigneur, je me livre à la puissance de ton amour fécond.

On this festival of Lady Day, let us pray with the most Holy Virgin Mary: O Lord, I deliver myself over to the power of Thy fruitful love.

Vespers -- Evening Prayer

Vespers (Evening Prayer)

Introduction
O God, come to my aid.
O Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
  world without end.
Amen.

Hymn
Hail, Queen of the heavens, hail Mistress of earth;
Hail, Virgin most pure of immaculate birth:
Clear star of the morning in beauty enshrined;
O Lady, make speed to the help of mankind.
Thee God in the depth of eternity chose,
And formed thee all fair as his glorious spouse,
And called thee his own Word’s true Mother to be
By whom he created the earth, sky, and sea.
Hail, Mother most pure, hail, Virgin renowned,
Hail, Queen with the stars as a diadem crowned;
Above all the angels in glory untold,
Set next to the King in a vesture of gold.
These praises and prayers we lay at thy feet,
O Virgin of virgins, O Mary most sweet:
Be thou our true guide through this pilgrimage here,
And stand by our side when our death draweth near.

Psalm 109 (110)
The Messiah, king and priest
The angel of the Lord brought the good news to Mary, and she conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit.
The Lord has said to my lord:
  “Sit at my right hand
while I make your enemies your footstool.”
From Zion the Lord will give you a sceptre,
and you will rule in the midst of your foes.
Royal power is yours in the day of your strength,
  among the sacred splendours.
Before the dawn, I begot you from the womb.
The Lord has sworn, and he will not repent:
“You are a priest for ever,
a priest of the priesthood of Melchisedech.”
The Lord is at your right hand,
and on the day of his anger he will shatter kings.
He will drink from the stream as he goes –
he will hold his head high.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
  world without end.
Amen.
The angel of the Lord brought the good news to Mary, and she conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Psalm 129 (130)
Out of the depths
Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. Behold, you will conceive and bear a son, and he will be called the Son of the Most High.
Out of the depths I have cried to you, Lord:
  Lord, hear my voice.
Let your ears listen out
for the voice of my pleading.
If you took notice of our transgressions, Lord –
  Lord, who would be left?
But with you is forgiveness,
and for this we revere you.
I rely on you, Lord,
  my spirit relies on your promise;
my soul hopes in the Lord,
more than the watchman for daybreak.
More than the watchman for daybreak,
let Israel hope in the Lord:
for with the Lord there is kindness
  and abundant redemption.
He himself will redeem Israel
  from all its transgressions.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
  world without end.
Amen.
Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. Behold, you will conceive and bear a son, and he will be called the Son of the Most High.

Canticle (Colossians 1)
Christ, firstborn of all creatures and firstborn from the dead
I am the servant of the Lord: let it be as you have said.
Let us give thanks to God the Father,
who has made us worthy to share in the light that is the saints’ inheritance.
He has rescued us from the power of the shadows
and brought us to the kingdom of his beloved Son,
in whom we have redemption
  and the forgiveness of sins.
He is the image of the invisible God,
  the first-born of all creation,
for in him all things were created,
  in heaven and on earth,
  visible and invisible,
thrones and dominations,
  principalities and powers.
All things were created through him and for him:
  he is before all things,
and in him all things hold together.
And he is the head of the body, the Church.
He is the beginning, the first-born from the dead,
and so he is pre-eminent above all.
For it was the Father’s will that the fullness of God should dwell in him,
and that through him all things should be reconciled to himself.
Through the blood of the Cross he brought peace to all things,
both on Earth and in the heavens.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
  world without end.
Amen.
I am the servant of the Lord: let it be as you have said.

Short reading 1 John 1:1-2 ©
Something which has existed since the beginning,
that we have heard,
and we have seen with our own eyes;
that we have watched
and touched with our hands:
the Word, who is life –
this is our subject.
That life was made visible:
we saw it and we are giving our testimony,
telling you of the eternal life
which was with the Father and has been made visible to us.

Short Responsory
The Word was made flesh. Alleluia, alleluia.
The Word was made flesh. Alleluia, alleluia.
And dwelt amongst us. Alleluia, alleluia.
The Word was made flesh. Alleluia, alleluia.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
The Word was made flesh. Alleluia, alleluia.

Canticle Magnificat
My soul rejoices in the Lord
The angel Gabriel said to Mary: ‘Hail, full of grace; the Lord is with you; you are the most blessed of women.’
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in God, my salvation.
For he has shown me such favour –
  me, his lowly handmaiden.
Now all generations will call me blessed,
because the mighty one has done great things for me.
His name is holy,
his mercy lasts for generation after generation
  for those who revere him.
He has put forth his strength:
he has scattered the proud and conceited,
  torn princes from their thrones;
  but lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things;
the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant Israel,
he has remembered his mercy as he promised to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children for ever.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
  world without end.
Amen.
The angel Gabriel said to Mary: ‘Hail, full of grace; the Lord is with you; you are the most blessed of women.’

Prayers and Intercessions
Today the Eternal Father announced our salvation to Mary through the message of his angel. With trusting souls let us pray:
Lord, give us the gift of your grace.
You chose the Virgin Mary to be the mother of your Son:
take pity on all who are awaiting their redemption.
Lord, give us the gift of your grace.
you announced peace and joy to Mary through the mouth of the angel Gabriel:
give the entire world true peace and the joy of salvation.
Lord, give us the gift of your grace.
You caused your Word to live among us, by the consent of your handmaiden and the power of the Holy Spirit:
incline our hearts to receive Christ just as the Virgin Mary received him.
Lord, give us the gift of your grace.
You look with kindness on the lowly and fill the hungry with good things:
raise up those who are cast down, help those in need, be a support for the dying.
Lord, give us the gift of your grace.
God, you alone work miracles and to you nothing is impossible:
give us salvation when you raise the dead on the last day.
Lord, give us the gift of your grace.

Our Father, who art in heaven,
  hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
  and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
  but deliver us from evil.

Shape us in the likeness of the divine nature of our Redeemer,
whom we believe to be true God and true man,
since it was your will, Lord God,
that he, your Word, should take to himself our human nature
in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
He lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
  God for ever and ever.
Amen.

May the Lord bless us and keep us from all harm; and may he lead us to eternal life.

AMEN

Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord (March 25, 2011)

Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord

Luke 1:26-38
The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin´s name was Mary. And coming to her, he said, "Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you." But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. Then the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end." But Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?" And the angel said to her in reply, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren; for nothing will be impossible for God." Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word." Then the angel departed from her.

Introductory Prayer:  Heavenly Father, you have given Mary to us as our Blessed Mother. Thank you. I know that she constantly intercedes on our behalf and that you listen to her prayer. I am confident in your mercy and love. You are guiding me home to spend eternity with you. I place all my trust in you. I offer you my weak, but grateful love in return.

Petition: Lord, grant me the grace to embrace you in faith, hope, and love.

1. Sent from God  Too often we attribute too much of our achievements to our own doing. Our education, wealth, or technological ability can lead us to have a false sense of security in our ability to shape our world. Today’s Gospel reminds us that God’s plan for the salvation of the human race is his own initiative. He sends his Son into the world at a precise time and in a precise place. He prepares Mary beforehand with everything she will need to fulfill her mission as Mother of the Redeemer – a mission that she accepts in freedom and through faith. I do well to realize more and more that God is also the true protagonist of my own life.

2. Do Not Be Afraid  One of the constant refrains of the Gospel is Jesus’ admonition: “Do not be afraid.” When the Lord draws near, our natural tendency is to be afraid. We can be afraid of his presence. We can be afraid of what he might ask of us. We can be afraid of our own limitations in the face of the call to true conversion and holiness of life. We can be afraid of the apparent obstacles along the path of Christian discipleship. Like Mary, we need to overcome our fear by embracing God’s will with faith and love. As our confidence in God increases, our fear decreases. As our love increases, our fear disappears. Of what am I afraid in my relationship with the Lord? Am I surrendering my fear by giving myself in faith?

3. May It Be Done to Me  What a truly incredible thing it is to make the salvation of the human race dependent upon the free response of Mary! Mary’s “yes” to God shows us the power and transcendence of personal choice. It also sheds light on the importance of our own personal “yes” to God with regard to his plan for our lives. Mary’s loving, faith-filled consent to a plan she did not fully understand becomes the model of our own daily consent to the divine will as it manifests itself in our daily lives.

Conversation with Christ:  Lord, I have remembered through this meditation that you are the one guiding my life and all of history. I need to be mindful that you always intend good for me, even if it is painful and purifying. So I should never be afraid of your hand in my life. I believe and trust in you my Lord, but increase my faith, hope and love.

Resolution:  I will embrace God’s will today as Mary did -- with faith and love.

Mary, the Perfect Antidote

March 25th, 2011 by Fr. Frank E. Jindra

Is 7:10-14; 8:10 / Heb 10:4-10 / Lk 1:26-38

Ahaz said “I will not ask. I will not tempt the Lord.”

Notice how pious he sounds. After all, Jesus made a similar statement when under temptation from the devil: “You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.”

It’s worse than different perspectives here. We have different goals. The devil was trying to goad Jesus into a display of His power as God as a way of proving His credentials. This was also true of the desire of the Pharisees later in Jesus’ ministry who were looking for a sign. Jesus would not rise to these “expectations” because He knew a show of power for power’s sake would never satisfy those without a longing heart.

Ahaz, on the other hand, did not want God to display His faithfulness. He was quite happy ignoring God’s call to the nation while he busily fooled around with false gods and their immoral rituals. If God made Himself present through some miraculous intervention, then Ahaz would be forced to take Him seriously. Not something this secularist/pagan-in-Jewish-clothing was willing to do.

Let me bring yet another example pair into the picture: the “yes” of the Blessed Mother and the “what” of John the Baptist’s father. In her trust in God, Mary did not hesitate to look forward to the movement of the Holy Spirit. When she was visited, not by a prophet but by an angel, she was willing to accept — at value — what was being proposed. Zechariah — also presented with an announcement of a son — could not accept the implausibility of such an action.

So here are our contrasts:

Ahaz who didn’t want to see God move, the Pharisees (and the devil) who demand a show of God’s movement, and Zechariah who couldn’t imagine God moving versus Mary who trusted God’s movement for her and Jesus Who is the very Movement of God.

Where do we stack up in this?

Are there times when we are afraid to let God move because, if we have to acknowledge His Presence, we would have to change?

Do we demand a movement of God as a proof of His love for us, or that He is at least listening?

Do we refuse to accept it when we see God moving for us and those around us?

Or do we trust in the movement of God around and for us? Have you ever heard of the title of Mary: Our Lady of Trust?

Today, as we acknowledge Mary’s “yes” and her trust in the Lord, we recognize she is the perfect antidote for:

• a secular world that is afraid to trust God;

• a demanding world that wants Him to step in and correct things, if He really loves us;

• a refusing, unseeing world that lacks the imagination to trust

“Immaculate Heart of Mary, true model of every holiness, grant us trust to become saints.” -– prayer by Bishop William Giaquinta, founder of the Pro-Sanctity Movement.

HO-HUM?

"How can this be?" —Luke 1:34

So many astonishing things occurred at the Incarnation:

  • A virgin conceived without having sexual relations (Lk 1:35).
  • Almighty God has loved sinful humanity so much that He decided to become fully human, and took residence in the womb of a human mother.
  • The Baby conceived by Mary is Emmanuel, God-with-us, Who would save us from our sins (Mt 1:23, 21).
  • The omnipotent God did not choose a royal mother, but chose one who was poor and lacking any social status.

One of the most astonishing things about the Incarnation is the ho-hum reaction from so many people. We Christians urgently need to be recaptured by the awe and amazement of the most wonderful and mysterious news of the Annunciation. Jesus, the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity, became Man! If we, who are followers of the Incarnate Jesus, are not constantly amazed at this most incredibly good news, how can we expect unbelievers to respond with joy?

Be overwhelmed with Jesus, Who was conceived for you, born for you, suffered for you, died for you, and rose for you so that you could live forever with Him. Be people of the Incarnation.

Prayer: Recapture me, O Jesus. Overshadow me with Your Holy Spirit. I am all Yours.
Promise: "We have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all." —Heb 10:10
Praise: "The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us, and we have seen His glory: the glory of an only Son coming from the Father, filled with enduring love" (Jn 1:14).

Compline -- Night Prayer

Compline (Night Prayer)

Introduction
O God, come to my aid.
O Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
  world without end.
Amen.

This is an excellent moment for an examination of conscience. In a communal celebration of Compline, one of the penitential acts given in the Missal may be recited.

Hymn
Christ, thou who art the light and day,
Who chasest nightly shades away,
Thyself the Light of Light confessed,
And promiser of radiance blest:
O holy Lord, we pray to thee,
Throughout the night our guardian be;
In thee vouchsafe us to repose,
All peaceful till the night shall close.
O let our eyes due slumber take,
Our hearts to thee forever wake:
And let thy right hand from above
Shield us who turn to thee in love.
O strong defender, hear our prayers,
Repel our foes and break their snares,
And govern thou thy servants here,
Those ransomed with thy life-blood dear.
Almighty Father, this accord
Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord,
Who with the Holy Ghost and thee
Doth reign through all eternity.

Psalm 87 (88)
The prayer of one gravely ill
Lord my God, I call for help by day, I cry at night before you.
Lord God, my saviour,
I have cried out to you by day and by night.
Let my prayer come before you:
turn your ear to my request.
For my soul is full of evils,
my life has come close to its end.
I am counted with those who go down to the pit:
  I am left without help.
I am one of the dead,
like the murdered who sleep in their tombs,
who lie there forgotten,
  cut off from your care.
You have thrust me down into the pit,
to the gloom and the shadow of death.
Your anger weighs heavy upon me;
you have drowned me under your waves.
You have taken my friends away from me:
you have made me hateful in their sight,
I am shut in, I may not go out.
My eyes are weak from my sufferings.
I have called to you, Lord, all the day;
I have stretched out my hands to you.
Is it for the dead that you perform your wonders?
Will the ghosts rise up and proclaim you?
In the tomb, will they tell of your kindness?
Will they tell of your faithfulness in the place of the lost?
Will your wonders be known in the darkness,
or your righteousness in the land of oblivion?
And so I have called out to you, Lord,
and in the morning my prayer will come before you.
With what purpose, Lord, do you reject my soul?
Why do you hide your face from me?
I am poor; from my youth I have been dying;
I have borne the terrors you sent, I am lost in confusion.
Your anger has overrun me, your terrors have broken me:
they have flowed round me like water,
they have besieged me all the day long.
You have taken my friends and those close to me:
all I have left is shadows.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
  world without end.
Amen.
Lord my God, I call for help by day, I cry at night before you.

Reading (Jeremiah 14:9) ©
Lord, you are in our midst, we are called by your name. Do not desert us, O Lord our God!

Short Responsory
Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
You have redeemed us, Lord, God of faithfulness.
Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.

Canticle Nunc Dimittis
Keep us safe, Lord, while we are awake, and guard us as we sleep, so that we can keep watch with Christ and rest in peace.
Now, Master, you let your servant go in peace.
  You have fulfilled your promise.
My own eyes have seen your salvation,
which you have prepared in the sight of all peoples.
A light to bring the Gentiles from darkness;
the glory of your people Israel.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
  world without end.
Amen.
Keep us safe, Lord, while we are awake, and guard us as we sleep, so that we can keep watch with Christ and rest in peace.

Let us pray.
Lord, let us be so united with your only Son that we become worthy to rise with him into new life, who lives and reigns for ever and ever, Amen.

May the almighty Lord grant us a quiet night and a perfect end.

AMEN

Ave Regina Caelorum
Hail, Queen of the heavens,
  hail, Lady of the angels.
Root of our salvation
  and our gateway to heaven,
the light of the world was born to you.
Be joyful, Virgin of glory,
most beautiful of all in heaven.
We greet you now, true beauty –
  pray for us to Christ.
Ave, Regina caelorum,
ave, Domina angelorum,
salve, radix, salve, porta,
ex qua mundo lux est orta.
Gaude, Virgo gloriosa,
super omnes speciosa;
vale, o valde decora,
et pro nobis Christum exora.
