Christian churches, including the Latter-day Saints, share many hymns

Four decades ago, when my wife Dianne and I were active Baptists, somehow we ended up with a Baptist hymnal in our home. This same kleptomaniac-like behavior has surfaced on multiple occasions with respect to LDS hymnals. We even have an LDS hymnal embossed with “Joseph Smith Memorial Building.”

Our Baptist hymnal is a...once widely-used, 1956-copyrighted edition published by Convention Press...

SNIP

Recently I searched our current 1985 edition of "Hymns of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints" to determine how many of these hymns are common to our older Baptist hymnal. One might be surprised to learn that of...341 hymns in the LDS hymnal, 55, or 16 percent, are also found in this particular Baptist hymnal.

SNIP

A cursory view of the index reveals that the LDS hymnal contains a large number of hymns on restoration themes like prophets, pioneers, gathering to Zion, mountains, and temples that are not contained in the Baptist hymnal. This situation reflects a similar theme with respect to our respective scriptures. Latter-day Saints and Baptists are commonly blessed with and enjoy reading the Bible, while Latter-day Saints have the added blessing and enjoyment of reading the restoration scriptures.

Based on the commonality of hymns and the identical doctrinal assertions repeatedly contained within them which point to Christ; his divine sonship and virgin birth; his life of perfection; his attributes of love, mercy and compassion; his incomparable suffering in Gethsemane; his crucifixion; and his Resurrection, it is only logical to conclude that if Baptist believers of the 1950s through the 1970s were “Christians,” then also are the LDS or Mormon believers of the mid-1980s to the present.

By the way, “Thou shalt not steal” the hymnbooks is a teaching which is common to both religious traditions.

With all the paintings Friberg did for the BOM one wonders why he never did show anyone riding a Tapir.

Possibly the threats from the Curelom's union?

Arnold Friberg, arguably more than any other artist, established for Latter-day Saints what Book of Mormon people, landscapes, and events might have looked like. (had they ever existed...)

Unfortunately, my church no longer uses its hymnal. We do “Rock Me, Jesus” every Sunday with our ‘worship team’.

I’d love to be able to have this argument.

Well LDS have borrowed and uses a great deal of Christian language etc....no wonder they’d borrow the hymns too. They can’t help but keep on putting layers over what they really are.

The LDS has different lyrics for the Christmas carol “Joy to the World.” Note the last stanza in particular:

Joy to the world! The Lord is come.
Let earth receive her King
Let every heart
Prepare Him room
And Saints and angels sing
And Saints and angels sing
And Saints and Saints and angels sing

Joy to the world, the Saviour reigns
Let Saints their songs employ
While fields and floods
rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat, Repeat, the sounding joy

Joy to the world with truth and grace
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness
And wonders of His love
And wonders of His love
And wonders and wonders of His love

No more will sin and sorrow grow,
Nor thorns infest the ground;
He’ll come and make the blessings flow
Far as the curse was found,
Far as the curse was found,
Far as, far as the curse was found.

He rules the world with truth and grace,
And gives to nations proof
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love;
And wonders of His love;
And wonders, wonders of His love.

Rejoice! Rejoice in the Most High,
While Israel spreads abroad
Like stars that glitter in the sky,
And ever worship God,
And ever worship God,
And ever, and ever worship God.

And ever worship God,
And ever worship God,
And ever, and ever worship God.

Why don't Mormons ask themselves, "which god?" And "why this god & not others?"

And if Jesus is a separate god, why does both the Bible & the Book of Mormon say to worship Him? (Doesn't that = worshiping more than one god?)

And, actually the Holy Ghost is supposed to be worshiped per Mormon 7:7 in the Book of Mormon. Doesn't that = worshiping 3 gods per Mormonism's breakout?

And if the head god appointed a former man, Elohim, to be "God" of this planet + Kolob...why don't Mormons want to worship the supreme god who appointed Elohim? Or the "council of gods" that the upper totem pole god heads up? What? Aren't they also "worthy" of a Mormon's worship?

Contradictions abound in Mormonism. Hence, Mormons have to switch the "off" button to their minds and the "on" button to subjective burning-bosom feelings. Otherwise, it brings on daily dizziness.

Sounds like you are interested in art. I like to tease Elsie the Borden Cow as I used to be the exclusive dealer for Keith Ward who created Elsie. He was also the guy that illustrated all of the Black Stallion books in addition to All the Dick and Jane readers.

We now own the Maynard Dixon property where we are having the picnic in July. Come on down!

When I look at Huntsman I think he’s been sharing a few Hymns as well.

Golly!

You guys must have the type of songs that, if you didn't know better, could be sung about your BOYFRIEND!

They use the words; but have CHANGED the meanings of them so that communication and discussion with them is almost impossible.

Indeed!

Vargas is one of my favorite artists...

What Hudson River has done for landscapes, he has done for the feminine gender.

You look at Playboy for the articles I presume. Esquire also showed his material early on.

Feminists just love him!

Arrghh!

The wife has all kinds of animals from that manufacturer.

She uses them in her Sunday School Classes, teaching the little ones.
