From the letter to the editor: the first rumblings of polygamy in Mormonism came in 1831, when Joseph Smith counseled a group of already-married Mormon elders: "For it is my will, that in time, ye should take unto you wives of the Lamanites and Nephites, that their posterity may become white, delightsome and Just, for even now their females are more virtuous than the gentiles."

What's interesting is that by 2009, a FAIR speaker conceded that Smith had already launched his nefarious polygamy career in 1831! - Prophet Joseph Smith, The Joseph Smith Revelations Text and Commentary, p. 374-37.

From the article: In fact, as LDS historian Todd Compton shows in his excellent book "In Sacred Loneliness: The Plural Wives of Joseph Smith," of Smith's 33 well-documented "plural wives," at least eleven of them had legal husbands at the time of their "sealing" to Smith. And, contrary to popular myth, none of those women were estranged from their legal husbands, so Smith didn't take them into his household to provide for them.

(No, actually these women "provided" for Smith, if you know what I mean...here he was coveting the wives of other men...and then engaged in wife-theft...something that Lds think only happens in fLDS clans in places like Hildale and Colorado City actually got its jumpstart with their "prophet" they so faithfully follow.

Brigham Young took the practice on where Smith left off. From the article: After Joseph Smith's death, some of his successors maintained his polyandrous practice: Brigham Young took Zina Jacobs for himself, telling her husband Henry that he "would have to go and get another" wife. Zina bore a child by Young on April 3, 1850. Brigham Young explained that such appropriations of already-married women were part of Joseph Smith's theology, which stated that a Mormon man who held a "higher power and authority than her husband" had the privilege of making "her his wife...he can do so without a bill of divorcement."...Mormon theology held that the more "plural wives" a man had, the greater his "kingdom" would be in the afterlife. Therefore, it was appropriate that the highest-ranking leaders could attract the greatest number of "plural wives" who could "ride his coattails" into his "celestial kingdom." This practice was so prevalent that many Mormon women had themselves "sealed by proxy" to Smith, Young, or other high leaders, even though they had no earthly relationship with them.

The reasons Ms. Daynes offers for the origins and purposes of 19th-century Mormon polygamy (as reported by Ms. Smith) do not comport in the least with known and accepted historical facts.

When did the LDS ever let facts get in the way. This is revisionist history at its finest. J. Smith, B. Young et al invented polygamy for Mormons because they were randy old pedophiles, nothing more, nothing less

Just more of mormonism trying to keep its ugly side under cover and out of sight of those mormonism wants to convert.

See how they continue to play down polygamy in this april 2011 issue of the ensign

Of the 40+ sexual aquaintances that the ghetto breeder Joey Smith had, were ANY of them actually WIDOWS ???

Of the women Joey Smith had sex with outside of legal marriage..

(God calls the act ADULTERY but we are speaking here of a guy who hated the Christian God of the Bible)

There were at least ELEVEN women who still had LIVING HUSBANDS

and several underage unmarried girls...

But I havent ever heard of any WIDOWS...

and when Briggie Young got together sexually with the women left behind after Joey Smith got himself killed in that shootout

there were no WIDOWS among them...

the only real WIDOW emma Smith had sense enough not to be one of the sex slaves in theocratic tyrant Briggie Youngs harem..

The various fundamentalist Mormon groups are actually much closer in spirit and practice to the original than is the mainstream version.

mormons focus on “faith promoting history” versus factual history - in other words, they consider valid research that which puts their religion in the best light and scorns factual history that shines a bright beam on the seedier parts of their religion - of which there are LEGION.

It is a cult, plain and simple. It is perverse, plain and simple. It is a human system of works salvation, plain and simple.

Those who are trapped in the cult of mormonism are quite nice outwardly... as they attempt to earn godhood through being “worthy”.
And to avoid hell by paying the “full tithe”.

It is a false religion.

Widows? Interesting, but what about joseph smith marrying women who were still married? Or those young things at 14 and 15, I am just guessing but not very likely they were widows.

Once one digs into the rel history of the peepstone, sexual predator, lying false prophet who founded Mormonism, it is plain, but it is far from simple. Think for a moment about the children trapped in the deceits and lies fed from the demon to perpetrate this false-front christian look-alike religion. These children are being ‘love to hell’ ... by parents who are devout Mormons and really love their children! When you see that reality, it makes little difference if some atheist or raging apologist derides you for exposing the evil that is at Mormonism’s heart, those children must be give some chance to escape the destiny their loving parents are directing them to. Personally, I can tolerate a lot of accusatory posting from opposition knowing those children can even read that via the Net and perhaps awaken from the demon’s clutches through it.

I’m surprised Mormon’s don’t use Joseph Smith’s willie as their symbol instead of the angel blowing a horn.

Sandra Tanner used to frequently carry a copy of the 1880 Census covering Utah to debates where the question of polygamy would arise. They showed a healthy surplus of males at every age group.

There were only about 120 fatalities in the Utah Mormon War of 1857, (coincidentally about the same number as Gentiles who perished at Mountain Meadows), and that cannot be attributed to persecution of the Saints.

Credible estimates of the number of Mormon men killed over the years from 1850-1890 vary considerably depending on source (e.g. extrapolations and statistical studies of census data, family records, etc.). Without digging through records (which I don't have time to do at present) as I recall, most fall in the range of 800 to 8,000. However, those fatalities were the result of Blood Atonement (i.e. Mormons killing Mormons) and thus cannot be attributed to Gentile persecution.

In any case, the Census records are fatal to the argument that there was a shortage of males at any time prior to the adoption of the First Manifesto.

Between 1960-63 I was one of the best apologists for the cause as I went door to door seeking converts for the cult.
We were instructed to use that shortage of men argument whenever it(polygamy) came up.

In the town of Aabenraa Denmark, near the German border we were very much believed with that. The shortage of men in that region was because of the war. There was indeed a shortage of men in Flensburg and Hamburg and I knew lots of 30-40 year old German women that would come to Denmark seeking certain pleasures.

Not that I ever did anything but baptize them. I even knew the Nazi Alf Kroll who had been in a British prison. His wife became a member in 1961.

“Higher power than her husband”...Ya gotta love that one. These false prophets all use the same tactics, be it Joseph Smith, David Koresh or Mohammed. They all use the same modus operandi. First they declare themselves prophets. Then they claim to have supernatural encounters and then they take advantage of their followers. When will people ever learn. A cult is a cult is a cult, whether the time is the eighteen hundreds, the six hundreds or the nineteen nineties.

It is the claim of having supernatural experiences and relevations which attracts their followers. Think about it. There were many different churches in those days, but only one had a leader who actually talked to an angel. This is the hook that grabs people.
