In Budget Battle, Church Officials Fast against Cuts, Silent on Planned Parenthood

In announcing a Lenten fast “for a moral budget,” many Religious Left officials are arguing against federal budget cuts but are silent about ongoing federal support for organizations like abortion provider Planned Parenthood.

According to Democratic and Republican sources quoted by the Washington Post, both the Planned Parenthood funding, as well as Medicaid funds for abortions in the District of Columbia, figured prominently in budget negotiations.

Religious groups participating in the “budget fast” include the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries, The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Hunger Program, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Lutheran World Relief, Sojourners and World Vision.

IRD President Mark Tooley commented:

“While fasting to protest federal budget cuts that supposedly harm ‘the least of these,’ many left-leaning religious officials’ seem uninterested in defunding abortion providers like Planned Parenthood. Cutting federal funding for Planned Parenthood presumably would permit fewer cuts elsewhere while protecting vulnerable unborn children.

“These church groups, citing Christian compassion and exploiting the Lenten season leading to Easter, profess moral outrage over federal cuts in social welfare programs but show no interest in defending the unborn from government-facilitated abortion.

“Why are church groups denouncing budget cuts for reputedly hurting the poor but SILENT about public funding for Planned Parenthood and Medicaid abortions in D.C.?”

There is NOTHING about coveting other people’s wealth. There is nothing moral about jealousy and envy.

Jim Wallis wants people to eat on $2 a day unless they’re on food stamps and then they can eat on $4 a day.

The United Methodist, The Presbyterians, The Lutherans are ALL left wing churches. They have been over run and controlled by Satanist pretending to be followers of Christ. These so-called churches are of the devil. Watch what they do not what they say. Money is the root of all evil. These congregations love other peoples money. That is all you need to know.

Mainline Denominationspeak explanation: "The secularists whose approval we covet don't take kindly to anyone's standing up for unborn children. Ergo, we'll stay silent."

“These church groups, citing Christian compassion and exploiting the Lenten season leading to Easter, profess moral outrage over federal cuts in social welfare programs but show no interest in defending the unborn from government-facilitated abortion."

“These church groups, citing Christian compassion"

Where is their compassion for the future generations these deficits are condemning to financial slavery?

Perhaps they should eat Jim Wallis. He wants to feed the poor, doesn’t he?

Wallis would make better fertilizer than food.

I’d read something earlier this week from one of the Bishops about de-funding Planned Parenthood. He was in favor of it. I think it might have been Archbishop Chaput of Denver.

The "church people" who fail to object to using my tax dollars to fund Planned Parenthood are, of course, not Christian ~ they are hypocrites.

Hear that Moslems? They are hypocrites. They are off the Christian list. They are yours now. Do your thing.

I hate to interrupt a good rant, but money is NOT the root of all evil, at least, according to the Bible.

Catholic bishops have been strong in standing up for the unborn. The ELCA pays for their abortions in the denomination's health care plan.

Jesus didn’t say, “Government, feed my sheep”. He commanded individual Christians to do this.

Money is the root of all evil.

Nope. The LOVE of money is the root of all evil.

FM: I am a Roman Catholic. I think you must make distinctions within Lutheranism (ELCA vs. generally pro-life/pro-family Wisconsin and Missouri Synods). There is at least one sizeable group of pro-life/pro-family Presbyterians (Westminster Confession?). There are also pro-life/pro-family Methodists (Rev. Mr. Flip Benham of Dallas and of Operation Rescue and, I believe our own FReeper xzins). Overgeneralization serves no legitimate interest.

Yes, I am an unapologetic pro-lifer. And I’m not the only methodist like me. Pushing half of us are.
