Presbyterians discover support for gay equality in surprising places {"More light" barf alert}
Washington Post ^ | 13 May 2011 | Janet Edwards

What’s most remarkable is that support is not just coming from the usual people and places. It’s coming from people like Rev. Arlo Duba, a self-described “life-long conservative Presbyterian.” Despite knowing gay people, including gay Christians, he had always voted to uphold the ban against openly gay clergy.

Then, he began a study of early baptismal practices – curious to learn whether anything could prevent someone from being baptized. Paging through his worn Bible, he became aware of countless examples of people formerly excluded from religious participation now being invited into the church – like Levi the tax collector and the Samaritan woman at the well. All were people shunned by society – and all were now being welcomed into the body of Christ.

During a vote in south Alabama, an elder from a small rural church rose to speak. He described himself as conservative and someone who was concerned about ethics in the church. Supporters of the amendment, thinking they knew where he was taking his remarks, were surprised by his next words.

“All over the Bible, there are stories of Jesus bringing in those who had been outcast. We say that gay people are welcome in our church, but as long as we deny ordination, they really aren’t,” he concluded.

I was appalled when I first glanced through this -- my first thoughts were "Are these people braindead?" and "is this a sign of general moral decay spreading?"

But then I looked at the author who is Co-Moderator of More Light Presbyterians and it all clicked. These are part of a vast movement against all Christians. It's not a conspiracy but an open secret.

Today the Presbyterians, tomorrow the Baptists or someone else. The attack is on against us all. And while we squabble among ourselves we don't see the external enemy...

Amazing.

Matthew stopped being a tax collector, as being one required illegal and unethical actions. The Samaritan woman was a victim of Jewish ethnic prejudice. The woman Christ saved from being stoned for adultery was told by him to “Go, and sin no more.”

Of course gays and lesbians are suitable for ordination, once they have repented and turned away from their sinful course, and presumably shown by their actions for a reasonable period of time that this is indeed a new life for them, not just a phase.

But the idea that those pursuing an ongoing and public life of sin should be ordained is ludicrous.

Janet, that is what is called a "principle". Also known as "morals". They should have had something on that in Sunday school. </s>

Yup. Homosexual cabal. They've been at war with the Protestant mainline churches since the mid-60's at least, maybe earlier.

Clever she left the moral judgment inferential rather than explicit, which could be a little hairy. She leaves the reader to guess the "right answer", that people who don't go along are "haters".

Anyone who's seen even a little church history on the Presbyterians knows that in the 17th and 18th centuries they didn't admit anyone to the baptismal font who hadn't been "born again" and could make a full confession of life and faith to the letter before being accepted as a full, covenanted member of the congregation. Congregationalists and Presbyterians were alike pretty starchy about who was a member of the congregation -- the Calvinist "elect" -- and who was not.

His study must have been a really short one because with minimal study he should have learned that Jesus always told these people to REPENT(TURN). We know this because Jesus said in Matthew 9:13 “13 “But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

As for the woman at the, the Bible teaches us that Jesus taught them and many BELIEVED. John 4:39” And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did.” And if believed, they obeyed and repented.

Can these activities be attributed to indulgence in prideful interpretation of scripture so treasured by some on this forum? Without a magisterium the spiritual ship of state is lost in the sea of chaos.

But then how does this differ from the poster who professes to converse with aliens and other assorted space cadets and the OPC which is probably waiting in the wings to follow suit with the ordination of Gays.

Is this the product of private interpretation of the bible?

Precisely. Repentance and change is essential.

Religious institutions who accept sin as virtue are caricatures of religion and anyone belonging to such phony institutions are contributing to moral destruction of society.

I agree. This is a homosexual activist group, whether they practice or simply are activists in sympathy. If I were any good at financial forensics, I might be strongly tempted to, as it were, “follow the money,” and see where it comes from. I believe your suspicion about the first, but not last target is correct, also. This money and group will chase us all.

On a related note, I’ve said before in these virtual halls that my grandfather was a Presbyterian minister. So was his father, as was my great uncle, and my grandfather’s best friend. I’d pretty much guarantee that older Presbyterians would likely know the names. Anyway, they were rather liberal democrats, to say the least, when that didn’t necessarily mean the awful things it does today, and a great bunch. I honestly do not think that this would be a move that they would favor at all.

More than anything else, your words in your last paragraph - every member of this place should read, and believe.
