Voices of pros and cons over "the end of the world is May 21"

Christian radio host Harold Camping made a 2011 end times prediction that the Rapture will take place on May 21 this year and that the end of the world will take place five months later on October 21. However, will the May 21 be another September 4 or September 6, 1994?

Camping, president of the Family Radio Christian network, has presented several arguments, or biblical "proofs", in favor of the May 21st end time, and claimed the Bible as his source saying May 21 will be the day of Rapture and judgment "beyond the shadow of a doubt". Meanwhile, his followers claimed about 200 million people will be raptured.

Well, at least I’ll make it to my 36th anniversary! (May 20th)

Congrats. I'm working on the second try at that one.

I’m packed and ready. Just in case.
I’m not paying any due bills either.
I’ll change my underwear on the 21st,
even though the change is not due for
another two and a half weeks. I bought
some gold coins in case I have to bribe
somebody up there, one never knows. And
I’m saying my prayers twice a day now.

I am currently reading this book. A much different story than Camping's

BTW, this book was written in 1881; you wouldn't believe how accurate it is!

The End of the Present World

Reading this book was one of the greatest graces of my life!"
— St. Thérèse of Lisieux

In the late nineteenth century, Father Charles Arminjon, a priest from the mountains of southeastern France, assembled his flock in the town cathedral to preach a series of conferences to help them turn their thoughts away from this life’s mean material affairs—and toward the next life’s glorious spiritual reward. His wise and uncompromising words deepened in them the spirit of recollection that all Christians must have: the abiding conviction that heavenly aims, not temporal enthusiasms, must guide everything we think, say, and do.

When Father Arminjon’s conferences were later published in a book, many others were able to reap the same benefit—including fourteen-year-old Thérèse Martin, then on the cusp of entering the Carmelite convent in Lisieux. Reading it, she says, “plunged my soul into a happiness not of this earth.” Young Thérèse, filled with a sense of “what God reserves for those who love him, and seeing that the eternal rewards had no proportion to the light sacrifices of life,” copied out numerous passages and memorized them, “repeating unceasingly the words of love burning in my heart.”

Now the very book that so inspired the Little Flower is available for the first time in English.

Let the pages of The End of the Present World and the Mysteries of the Future Life fill you with the same burning words of love, with the same ardent desire to know God above all created things, that St. Thérèse gained from them. Let them also enrich your understanding of certain teachings of the Faith that can often seem so mysterious, even frightening:

  • The signs that will precede the world’s end
  • The coming of the Antichrist, and how to recognize him
  • The Judgment and where it may send us: heaven, hell, and purgatory
  • Biblical end-times prophecy: how to read it and not be deceived

Jesus commands us to be ever-watchful for his return, and ever-mindful that we have no lasting city on earth. The End of the Present World and the Mysteries of the Future Life is an invaluable aid to inculcating in your spirit that heavenly orientation, without which true human happiness cannot be found—in this world or the next.

I was just telling my family about some interesting observations. And they must be true because I read them on FR! This is from memory, and I’m no expert, so take with some room for error.

In the Bible, Jesus did SOMETHING on all of the Jewish festival days.

Except for the Feast of Trumpets.

The interesting thing about the Feast of Trumpets, the time it happens changes from year to year. It is a fall festival IIRC, and is based on the moon and stars, so can vary quite a bit - even the month IIRC. (”No one knows the day”)

Also, it begins when the sun rises as observed from Jerusalem - and needs to be confirmed by two people. So, depending on cloud cover, the day, etc. “No one knows the hour.”

Also, where it talks (Revelation?) about Jesus appearing with a blast of the trumpet (Feast of Trumpets).

I think there was more perhaps. But interesting things to contemplate. Not that I get worked up about it, but I do find it interesting.

My old man got me a book way back when: “99 Reasons why the Rapture will be in 1988” or somesuch. The interesting thing is, my old man (RIP) got to meet Jesus in 1988. And who knows, maybe I’ll get to meet Him tonight. Although I can’t say that I would be glad to meet him. (My dad was!)

“...and that the end of the world will take place five months later on October 21.”

Heh. I always figured the Tribulation would be a hard time - a real trial. Five months doesn’t seem too bad. I could tough it out through a lot of things for five months I think. (Well, demons shoving pitch forks under my fingernails, perhaps not.)

I think that Peter and Paul and many other disciples were convinced that Jesus would return in their lifetimes.

That was 2000 years ago.

I suppose it could be another 2000 years man could have to wait.

Being demanded of the Pharisees when the kingdom of God should come, He answered them, and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation; neither shall they say, Lo here! or, Lo there! for behold, the kingdom of God is within you (Luke 17:20-21)

Well it completely wipes out any talk about May 21st being ‘Armed Forces Day’.

So I guess the left is thrilled.

Voices of pros and cons over "the end of the world is May 21"

Pros:

(1) Won't have to go through another election year.

(2)No more income tax, ever and forever, Amen!

(3)Assuming one is saved, eternal and blessed life in the Presence of God; new heavens, new earth; dead friends and relatives back again! (And maybe even my old dog, Smokey!)

Cons:

(1) The whole "if one is NOT saved" thing--which pretty much takes up the entirety of the list.
