I have taken up painting in the last several years for essentially the same reason. There is too much richness in Western culture, and we have abandoned it. The art of painting is difficult to learn and has almost been lost, by a culture that is now trivializing the hard work and effort required to master an art. Modern art is no different than the damage done by rap to music, or even reducing drama and acting to reality tv. My art will never be great, but I will never settle for producing therapy-by-finger-painting.

Congratulations for taking up this challenge. You must have a talent for it due to your voiced outlook posted here. Blessings!

Nice piece - a bit dated, I think. Armstrong did a series of large bronzes for Ave Maria School of Law.

Marton Varo is also worth a look. He did the large Annunciation of Ave Maria for Ave Maria University's chapel.

I urge everyone to support the work of Dony Macmanus. He is a member of Opus Dei and is dedicated to fostering a rebirth of religious art. He is working to set up a school in Rome that will be associated with the Vatican.

Here is a reredos with tabernacle - note that Mary is the tabernacle.

Another artist with a deep understanding of the purpose of art is David Clayton. He also has a measure of success as the Artist-in-Residence and Lecturer in Liberal Arts at the Thomas More College of Liberal Arts.

I just recently learned of an iconographer, David Clayton, based at Thomas More College in Merrimack NH, who creates beautiful art. He spoke to students at my school last week and it was a fascinating lecture!

Very nice! I didn’t know that Armstrong did those. We have a series of lectures on video tape by him covering art history.
