The College of Cardinals has elected the popes for more than 900 years. The fact that rarely are any of the members younger than 50 is just one of several reasons why they’ve never made it to the NCAA Final Four.
Age notwithstanding, they’ve presumably also shunned any shoe company deal or AAU team tie-in.
I think limiting admission to celibate males who've completed six years of post-secondary education and a > 15 year apprenticeship puts them at a disadvantage in recruiting relative to the Kentuckys and Ohio States of the world.
However, I have it on good authority that they've never been sanctioned by the NCAA for trading signed memorabilia for tattoos.
