No, but too many Christians look at the Bible as an “instruction manual,” or a set of rules for life. They miss the Author. The Bible is not God’s revelation of a set of rules to mankind; it is God’s revelation of Himself.

Your parents had a set of rules for the household. When you were a child, you focused on the rules, which kept you out of trouble. But if they were good parents, you learned more than just a set of rules; you got to know them and their personalities. Those personalities especially came out as they dealt with difficult people and difficult situations. The Old Testament is full of stories of God dealing with rebellious people and the situations they put themselves in. As we read them, we get not only cautionary tales for our own life, but we also get to know God.

I agree totally with your second paragraph, other than the fact that I might revise your statement to say “God dealing with HIS rebellious people” in the sense that it is largely the story of Israel, His set apart people, into whom we are grafted.

But I do disagree with your first statement, in that I actually believe that too FEW Christians view the Bible as an instruction manual. They view it as a love story, which it is, but don’t often enough apply its instructions to their lives, including those found in the Torah which pertain to the average believer.
