What Utah hasn't been able to do in over a century of statehood, took less than a decade for Texas to do that.
It's called Mormon ambivalence over polygamy. They straight-arm it; but rarely tackle it. Why? Could it have something to do with their belief that many of their dead "prophets," "apostles," & even twice-married current "general authorities" are or will be considered eternal polygamists.
Most probably not. It would be "underage", or something like that.
Like you, I am NOT defending this cult leader, but I would be far more impressed if the state could prosecute others for the same crime. It says here that it was proved in court that he fathered a child with a 15 year old, in a polygamist marriage. They are horrified by the Mormonism, not the underage sex.
I guarantee you I could go to many schools in that state, and find some pupil on the rolls who is pregnant at 15 - or less. No charges are laid. Unmarried teenage girls having babies - even at the age of 12 - are well known in our modern Western societies. But they are not involved in polygamist cults. So the law does nothing.
It must be something about the ABUSE OF POWER that got ol' Jeffy in trouble - NOT his religion.
