Would You Attend a Same-Sex Wedding? {ans by Joel Osteen}
Christian Post ^ | 18 Oct 2011 | R Albert Mohler

Posted on 10/18/2011 11:38:34 AM PDT by Cronos

Would you attend a same-sex wedding ceremony? That question was posed recently to Houston pastor Joel Osteen, and Osteen said that he would attend, if the wedding involved friends. This came just after Osteen indicated that he could not perform a same-sex marriage ceremony, since he believes that homosexuality is a sin.

I recently wrote about this exchange, suggesting that Osteen’s position is morally and theologically incoherent. As I said:

This is beyond mere incoherence. It is moral and theological nonsense. More than that, it is a massive statement of ministerial malpractice. . . . You cannot celebrate what you say you know to be sin. You cannot honestly say that same-sex marriage defies the law of God, and then join in the celebration of that ceremony.

In recent days, Uri Scaramanga of “Out of Ur” and Leadership magazine posed the question to readers, using my comments as a point of reference. The question: “Is Al Mohler right? Is attending a same-sex marriage ceremony the same as performing one? Is it ministerial malpractice? What would you do?”

The responses to that question are revealing. I did not, however, argue that attending a same-sex marriage ceremony is the same as performing one, I did say - and I repeat - that it is incoherent and inconsistent to refuse to perform a same-sex marriage ceremony, and then to attend one.

So then you must be one of the rare Freepers that believes that homosexuality and same sex marrieage is an ok thing?

I doesn’t matter to me if it is ok or not, that’s not my call. It just is.

Nice noncommital answer. Exactly and example of why this country is sinking. Compromise with that which is wrong. Hope you enjoy the new world coming.

You’re welcome. Why should I care if it’s wrong or right?

If he were to marry a man, .... that's what love is

What if he wanted to marry a girl aged 11? Or a donkey? Or a plastic life-sized doll?

your friendship is admirable, but we do not go with bells when a friend sins. We point out that they are doing something wrong. If it means not going for the act, it is obeying the wishes of God rather than man.

you can be nice about it -- 'I'm sorry I can't attend this due to my religious convictions, but I respect you as a friend.'

if he is abstinent, good for him — he isn’t giving in to sin. He should be admired for this struggle. But if he did give in to this sin, it should not be celebrated.

Cronos, you're like the smartest guy I read here and I learn loads from you, and almost always completely agree with you. Then there's now...

I think it cheapens the argument to have to inject bestiality or pedophilia or whatever the hell Latex-lovin' is called. If the problem is two adult men in love, then stick to that. Once you say it's against God's Word, it almost seems as if God's Word isn't enough all by Itself when you feel the need to invent slippery slope non-sequiturs.

I had not given this that much thought in the past but even if it was a family member or a very close friend the answer would be ‘no’. I would not attend a ceremony celebrating a homosexual relationship. It is perversion and in such I am not going to publically condone perversion which is what I would be doing if I were to go to one. It is time that people start to stand up against the constant attempt by the left-wing to normalize all types of perversion in our society. I have made the decision that I will stand against this 100%.

Why should you care about anything, whether it is wrong or right?

Mostly because of what ‘wrong’ does to society. But you seem to be blinded to that.

Why should we care about the ‘wrong’ of socialism?

And why is it that at every homosexual pride festival you see all of these things that you claim should not be injected? Sexuality is not a series of isolated varieties. Once sexuality is corrupted in one way it opens the door to all sorts of corruption.

under the law there is no “love test” for marriage.

it is never about love, it is about the institution benefiting society. Now we have judges and radical leftists pushing sexual recreation as grounds for marriage.

There is no need for religion as grounds to justify not attending or condoning such a relationship. Merely finding the conduct of homosexuals wrong ON ANY GROUNDS (religious OR OTHERWISE) is enough grounds.
