Mars Hill Pastor Mark Driscoll: Mormonism is a cult
Seattle Times ^ | Oct. 18, 2011 | Posted by Jim Brunner

With Mitt Romney campaigning...his Mormon religion is coming under increasing scrutiny.

SNIP

Now Mark Driscoll, pastor of the high-profile Seattle-based Mars Hill Church, has added his voice to the fray -- agreeing that Christians should consider Mormons as members of a "cult" and not "brothers and sisters in a common faith."

Writing on his website Tuesday, Driscoll goes on at length about the various definitions of a cult. He is careful to say that Mormonism has "outgrown" the popular culture and sociological definitions of a cult because of its enormous growth and general acceptance in the nation.

But, Driscoll writes, Mormonism "is most certainly a cult theologically speaking because it deviates substantially from historic Orthodox Christian belief about essential issues related to God, humanity, and salvation." And it's not just that it differs, he says, but also that "it claims Christianity while subtly subverting it in both practice and theology."

"Because it claims to be Christian, uses Christian language, but is antithetical Christianity, it must be labeled a cult theologically," Driscoll writes.

He concludes:

"So what do we make of all this? Simply said, by the theological definition, Mormonism is a cult."

"As the presidential race heats up and the prospect of a practicing Mormon as a viable Republican candidate becomes more a reality, there will be continued effort to bring Mormonism into the center of Christian orthodoxy..."

"...we cannot go so far as to call them brothers and sisters in a common faith. To do so is to not only confuse real Christians, but to also diminish the importance of lovingly speaking with Mormons about the errors of their belief in hopes of seeing them come to know the real God of the Bible and avoiding eternal damnation for worshiping a false god."

The word has connotations that may have applied to the Mormon Religion 100 years ago, but would not apply now.

So...

...has their SCRIPTURE changed since then?

As long as they don’t try to force me to believe or worship their way I don’t care what their doctrine is.

We've deduced this.

Elsie if “I don’t care” is all you got out of it you missed the point. I also said “As long as they don’t try to force me to believe or worship their way”.

This is called “Freedom of Religion” They have the right to be Mormon and I have the right not to be.

Like I said when those “young cute” Mormon missionaries come to my door I tell them “I am happy and content in my religion”. ie “Dudes I am a Catholic and I ain’t budging!”

Now call me when those young cute Mormon missionaries are cutting off people’s heads while yelling “Allah Snackbar” because others would not convert to Mormonism and we will have a problem on our hands.

To the rest of you, you don’t have to go to a Mormon church, no one if forcing you, so why are you so worried?

“And by by being born of the Virgin Mary, would that include a god who came down from heaven and had sexual relations with the Virgin Mary and that Jesus was conceived from that relationship?”

If they actually believe this then this sounds an awful lot like something the greek god Zeus used to do with one of his many human women. In fact if this is true (Don’t know don’t go to a Mormon church) Sounds like they have crossed Greek mythology with Christianity.

Dude! I am not a Mormon, so I don’t care about their doctrine!

I'm sure you can read carefully and upon looking more closely I never said or inferred that your were one.

It is a free country (I still hope) and if they want to follow the Book of Mormon, which I have read and don’t agree with that is their right.

Again, I never said otherwise

As long as they don’t try to force me to believe or worship their way I don’t care what their doctrine is.

Yet if a mormon like romney gains the whitehouse, his religious beliefs will form the basis for most, if not all of his decisions. Therefore, while you won't be forces to worship their way- you will end up having to live with decisions based upon their religious beliefs.

In fact if this is true (Don’t know don’t go to a Mormon church)

Then I would advise that before your pronounce Mormons as "Christians" that you educate yourself about their peculiar beliefs, practices and history. Just because they say they believe in Jesus does not make them Christians.

The Jesus they believe in is a fairy tale literal offspring of a relationship between God the Father and one of his countless wives and that Satan is one of his brothers.

The God they believe in was once a man on a different planet who became a god by following the rules set forth by the council of the gods on the planet Kolob.

The Jesus they believe in did not die on the cross for your sins.

The Mormons teach that if they follow in the footsteps of their god that someday they will become gods.

Now would you say that ANYONE who believes this stuff should be numbered among those who are called "Christians"?

I’m not worried about Mormonism, but I’m concerned that their false teachings will lead people to condemnation. Threads like this one aim to educate people of the false doctrines of Mormonism, with the hope that Mormons and seekers will find true faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Your carefree attitude goes against the great commission of go and make disciples...

Good point P-M.

Perhaps Morgana you should read the book of Galatians. Here Paul writes to them concering a group that called themselves “christian” too. Notice his response to them and towards these other “christians”.

There’s nothing new in the world - the bible has already addressed these Christian wannabes.

John 9: 49-50

49 “Master,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us.”

50 “Do not stop him,” Jesus said, “for whoever is not against you is for you.”
