"You forgot the caption ..."

Well that explains why Monson and oaks are there with Obama....but Ried...He's a just a marxist, pro-abrtion-pro-gambling anti-gun temple recommend interview liar.

You'd think Monson would have the knowledge or discernment to detect this and not pose for such an historic photograph with him.

Actually, I just found the book on Amazon - it’s called “Witnessing Effectively to Mormons” by John L. Smith.

I am not a Mormon, but all of the Mormons I have known are pretty decent people (excepting Harry Reid, who I doubt is really a Mormon).

A nice Mormon lady tried to recruit me to the religion, and I was told I couldn’t drink coffee anymore, Coke, or a glass of beer or an occasional glass of wine.

I told her I would get back to her ..

Sorry those are deal breakers for me.

“OK, so the LDS sect broke off from the mainstream mormons of the day because of the JST. Then, they incorporated a book of the JST into some other book. Is that right?”

Don’t feel bad. I’m as confused as you are about it.

>>Please trust my motives and methods.

I’m very happy that you got yourself out of the mormon church. I’ve spoken to others who had the same difficulty. I don’t doubt your motives because I know that you just want to rescue as many people as you can. I’m only doubting your methods. But if they work to shock mormons out of the cult and back to the real Jesus Christ, then keep going.

In my case, I didn’t fall for the mormon’s sales pitch. I fell for the secular “God is a joke and only an idiot wastes their life worshipping a myth” line for 30 years. That’s a tough cult to get out of too. Just as God sent you into a fit of rage to discover the truth, He sent me a command serve Him and it was powerful enough to make me repent right there. But, in a strange twist of humor, He sent a mormon to my door to deliver the wake-up call. We talked for two hours and I knew that there was something wrong with their story, but I also knew that I had to get to know Jesus in His house and spend the rest of my life serving Him.

>>There is not book of Abraham in the Bible.

Ok. Your first post was very confusing then. You quote a book of Abraham and then talk about the JST. I had assumed that Smith had written a book of Abraham into the JST and that’s what you were talking about. So, the JST was really nothing more radical than the NIV or NLT of its day?

I grew up in and lived in mormon communities...I know from personal experience they are NO better than most any other group of people...they have among them as many adulterers, pedophiles, abusers, drunks and in particular there are many mormon conmen who cheat their own. Don't fall for the false face of mormonism.

"By their fruits, Ye Shall Know them."

You said it perfectly, you are not a mormon. The things you see as "fruits" are a deception, the carfully crafted public image so closely guarded by lds inc. Grooming, clothing, the myth of good family people when in reality they have very little time left for their family if they are perfomring their church assigned works. the Fruits of mormonism are highest in the nation per capita use of anti-depressants, women crying themselves to sleep worried about sharing their husbands with other women in the afterlife, utter, eternal despair when one comes to the reality other Christians accept as a given that we can not work our way to heaven. You have no idea what it is like to work yourself literally into temporary blindness and see no physical results, I have on several occasions in the lds church. One can only assume, that a lack of physical blessings on the earth in the face of such works is also a sign of eternal damnation. I would take the pain of physical fire in a heartbeat rather than experience that utter, permanent lack of hope again, it was that bad. You have no idea what that feels like, I do.

Those along with the broken up families of those who leave, or don't join etc....those are the fruits of the mormon cult. Yes, by their fruits shall you know them. Many members are nothgin more than deceived victims. Leaders are guilty of all of it.

"So, the JST was really nothing more radical than the NIV or NLT of its day?

I'm sorry to cause confusion. The JST and Book of Abaraham are two completely different subjects, other than they both go right the main decpetions of the lds sect.

No, comparing the JST to the NIV is not even close. Among other things, FLDS/LDS "prophet" Joseph Smith wrote himself into the book of Genesis, by name.

It is all confusing when you try to put it together, because it's nothing but layers of lies. The mind of the cult member covers it up, blames the confusion on their own lack of knowledge, and justifies all things due to blind loyalty, guilt and fear.

I’m not in the Romney camp unless he wins the nomination. Then, I’ll be there front and center. From what I hear, so will Herman Cain. I think he even said he would be proud to be his VP. So if there are any Cain supporters out there beating this Mormon horse to death, they ought to look at their own candidate again.

Bryon, I am a direct descendant of Martin Harris, the one Smith conned into selling his farm to pay for the first printing of the book of mormon....Dumb Dumb Dumb Dumb Dumb. (Southpark Mormon Musical)

Lucky for me I am also a direct Descendant of Lucy Mack Harris....Smart Smart Smart Smart Smart. :)

In fact it was her along with the freeper inmans indirectly that brought me to my breaking point. I thought I was eternally damned because she lost over 100 pages of origanl manuscripts of the book of Mormon. She was trying to prove Smith a fraud when he was writign the thing and basically swiped them to compare against his replacement...Of course it wouldn't match. Smith said she and her posterity were condemned. He never replaced the swiped section, wrote that God was angry about it and wouldn;t allow him to, of course.

***Breakaway?? I thought the LDS sect was the majority of mormons, by a very large margin?***

When Joe Smith got killed, the Mormon church had quite a few men claim to be the true leaders of the church. Each split off and went their separate ways.

Some followed various “prophets” like B Young, others went with Strang (Strangites), Gladen (Gladenites), and quite a few others like the RLDS.
Some went to Utah, others went to Texas or Michigan and some stayed where they were.

Even these groups fragmented. The Morrisites broke from the LDS and were shot down by Young’s militias.

Someone on FR posted a list of the various Mormon sects and they are many!

Amen brother, the lds sect sort of bubbled to the top because of the visciousness of Brighasm Young, his "blood atonement" doctrine, and his teachings to behead " apostates. The lds sect however is the only one, I believe, that dishonors Smith's "Retranslation" of the Bible by labaling it a fraud and not using it.

So not only are the lds not Christians, a very good argument could be made that they are not even Mormons. They should consult their leaders about this to clear up their confusion and avoid any further future embarassment. ;)

Harry's lies stem from his Liberalism; a 'religion' far more dangerous and insidious than LDS. Romney; well. . .safe to say he is a 'politician' and while I do not support him; to compare him to Reid (and ergo; John Huntsman, by same and damn by 'religion') is just a variation of progaganda; in itself.

Now, Obama's Liberal/Marxist/Leftist. . .Liberation Theology - not to mention his Islamic sympathies; should bring a 'fear and trembling'. Four more years of this; and no question; America is doomed.

We've been trying to warn you....Until 9/11, the mountain meadows massacre was the single most deadly terrorist attack in us history.

In the heat of the Missouri “Mormon War” of 1838, Joseph Smith made the following claim, “I will be to this generation a second Mohammed, whose motto in treating for peace was ‘the Alcoran [Koran] or the Sword.’ So shall it eventually be with us—‘Joseph Smith or the Sword!’”

-Joseph Smith made this statement at the conclusion of a speech in the public square at Far West, Missouri on October 14, 1838. This particular quote is documented in Fawn M. Brodie, No Man Knows My History, second edition, (New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1971), p. 230–231. Fawn Brodie’s footnote regarding this speech contains valuable information, and follows. “Except where noted, all the details of this chapter [16] are taken from the History of the [Mormon] Church. This speech, however, was not recorded there, and the report given here is based upon the accounts of seven men. See the affidavits of T.B. Marsh, Orson Hyde, George M. Hinkle, John Corrill, W.W. Phelps, Samson Avard, and Reed Peck in Correspondence, Orders, etc., pp. 57–9, 97–129. The Marsh and Hyde account, which was made on October 24, is particularly important. Part of it was reproduced in History of the [Mormon] Church, Vol. III, p. 167. See also the Peck manuscript, p. 80. Joseph himself barely mentioned the speech in his history; see Vol. III, p. 162.”

When Joe Smith got killed, the Mormon church had quite a few men claim to be the true leaders of the church.

This is offered solely as a historical response, as I understand history, and is not intended as a theological argument. I support the right of Free Republic members to their religious beliefs.

When Joseph Smith, Jr., was killed in 1844, there wasn't an established method of succession for determining the next prophet.

Members of the church were split as to whom they chose to follow as the prophet: Brigham Young, Sidney Rigdon (senior surviving member of the First Presidency), James Strang, Lyman Wight, Alpheus Cutler (one of the Council of Fifty), William Smith, David Whitmer (a witness to the Book or Mormon), or Joseph Smith III (son of Joseph Smith, Jr.). Sects of the original church went to Utah, Missouri, Illinois, Michigan, and Pennsylvania

Two of those sects would strenuously object to being called sects, clearly believing themselves to be the true successor to Joseph Smith, Jr.'s church. The first is The Corporation of the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, commonly known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, or the Mormons, based in Salt Lake City. It is by far the largest sect. It's based in Salt Lake City and traces its lineage through Brigham Young.

The second is the Community of Christ (formerly called the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) (note: no hyphen, as there was no hyphen used in the name of the church when Joseph Smith, Jr. was alive), based in Independence, Missouri, which traces its lineage through Joseph Smith, III.

Other LDS sects currently in existence are:

Short Creek Community
Latter Day Church of Christ
Apostolic United Brethren
Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints
Church of the Firstborn of the Fulness [sic] of Times
Church of the Lamb of God
Church of the New Covenant in Christ
Confederate Nations of Israel
Righteous Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
School of the Prophets
Centennial Park
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Kingdom of God
True and Living Church of Jesus Christ of Saints of the Last Days
The Church of the Firstborn and the General Assembly of Heaven
Blackmore/Bountiful Community
Restoration Church of Jesus Christ
Order of Enoch
Aaronic Order
Zion’s Order, Inc.
Perfected Church of Jesus Christ of Immaculate Latter-day Saints
Church of Jesus Christ (Bullaite)
Church of Jesus Christ (Toneyite)
Independent RLDS / Restoration Branches
Church of Jesus Christ Restored 1830
Church of Christ (Lion of God Ministry/Clarkite)
Church of Jesus Christ (Zion’s Branch)
Restoration Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
Remnant Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
Church of Christ (Temple Lot) (Hedrickite)
Church of Christ (Fettingite) (Hedrickite)
Church of Christ at Halley’s Bluff (Hedrickite)
Church of Christ (Restored) (Hedrickite)
Church of Christ “With the Elijah Message” (Hedrickite)
Church of Christ (Hancock) (Hedrickite)
Church of Christ (Burtite) (Hendrickite)
Church of Israel (Hendrickite)
Church of Christ with the Elijah Message (The Assured Way of the Lord)
(Hendrickite) The Church of Jesus Christ (Bickertonite)
Church of Jesus Christ (Cutlerite)
True Church of Jesus Christ (Cutlerite)
Restored Church of Jesus Christ (Cutlerite)
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Strangite)
Holy Church of Jesus Christ (Strangite)
Church of Jesus Christ (Drewite) (Strangite)
True Church of Jesus Christ Restored (Strangite)
Pentecostal Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Whitmerite)

The following sects are either defunct or thought to be defunct:

Pure Church of Christ (Clarkite)
Independent Church (Hotonite)
Church of Christ (Boothite)
Church of Christ (Parrishite)
Alston Church
Church of Christ (Chubbyite)
Church of Jesus Christ, the Bride, the Lamb’s Wife
Church of Christ (Pageite)
True Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
The Church of Zion (Godbeite)
United Order Family of Christ
Church of the Potter Christ
Church of the Firstborn (Morrisite)
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Gibsonite)
Church of Jesus Christ of Saints of the Most High
Church of the Christian Brotherhood
Church of Jesus Christ of the Children of Zion (Rigdonite) Reorganized
Church of Jesus Christ (Bickertonite) Primative Church of Jesus Christ (Bickertonite)
Church of Christ (Aaron Smith)
Church of the Messiah (Adamsite)
Church of Christ (Wrightite)
Church of Christ (Whitmerite)
Church of Christ (Brewsterite)
The Bride, the Lamb’s Wife
Congregation of Jehovah’s Presbytery of Zion
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Gladdenite)
Independent Latter Day Saints of Nigeria
Independent Latter Day Saints of Ghana
Apostolic Divine Church of Ghana

The majority of these sects broke away from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints after the 1890 Manifesto and still practice polygamy. However, a few broke away from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in protest of Brigham Young's teachings on polygamy; breaking away from the LDS church once it had established itself in Utah under Young's leadership was a dangerous thing to do.

Other sects broke away from Joseph Smith, Jr's original church (some in protest against polygamy), some as a result of the leadership crisis upon his death, and some as as result of men within Smith's church claiming their own translation of additional religions texts.

The Independent Latter Day Saints of Nigeria, Independent Latter Day Saints of Ghana, and Apostolic Divine Church of Ghana were sects started pre-1978, when blacks could not hold the priesthood in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and could therefore not be exalted and achieve the Celestial Kingdom. Blacks who had been converted by Mormon missionaries in Ghana and Nnigeria started their own sects of the LDS church in which they were able to hold the priesthood.

I was speaking to the religious threads that slam a particular religion quite religiously. I never said FR is vile, ever. But if you want to interpret my comments as such then I guess you will. Whatever, I’m losing heart as to people being just basically fair anyhow. Fairness doesn’t seem to enter into the equation. Do as you will. I don’t care anymore.

the hate mormon stuff is getting tired.

Hate: again, hallucinating. I have no reason to have anything against any individual mormon. Perhaps because I don't hang around with any.

But the proposition that the religion makes strikes me as ridiculous.

And this is where I leave our discussion, FRiend.

How can you be a “lifelong FORMER mormon”?

Does that mean you WERE a Mormon in the pre-mortal life?

“In the heat of the Missouri “Mormon War” of 1838, Joseph Smith made the following claim, “I will be to this generation a second Mohammed, whose motto in treating for peace was ‘the Alcoran [Koran] or the Sword.’ So shall it eventually be with us—‘Joseph Smith or the Sword!’”

Mohammed and Joseph Smith both had humble beginnings. Neither had formal religious connections or upbringing, and both were relatively uneducated. Both founded new religions by creating their own scriptures. In fact, followers of both prophets claim these scriptures are miracles since their authors were the most simple and uneducated of men.[2]

Both prophets claim of having angel visitations, and of receiving divine revelation to restore pure religion to the earth again. Mohammed was told that both Jews and Christians had long since corrupted their scriptures and religion. In like manner, Joseph Smith was told that all of Christianity had become corrupt, and that consequently the Bible itself was no longer reliable. In both cases, this corruption required a complete restoration of both scripture and religion. Nothing which preceded either prophet could be relied upon any longer. Both prophets claim they were used of God to restore eternal truths which once existed on earth, but had been lost due to human corruption.

Both prophets created new scripture which borrowed heavily from the Bible, but with a substantially new “spin.” In his Koran, Mohammed appropriates a number of Biblical themes and characters—but he changes the complete sense of many passages, claiming to “correct” the Bible. In so doing he changes many doctrines, introducing his own in their place. In like manner, Joseph Smith created the Book of Mormon, much of which is plagiarized directly from the King James Bible. Interestingly, the Book of Mormon claims that this same Bible has been substantially corrupted and is therefore unreliable. In addition, Joseph Smith went so far as to actually create his own version of the Bible itself, the “Inspired Version,” in which he both adds and deletes significant portions of text, claiming he is “correcting” it. In so doing he also changes many doctrines, introducing his own in their place.

As a part of their new scriptural “spin,” both prophets saw themselves as prophesied in scripture, and both saw themselves as a continuation of a long line of Biblical prophets. Mohammed saw himself as a continuation of the ministry of Moses and Jesus. Joseph Smith saw himself as a successor to Enoch, Melchizedek, Joseph and Moses. Joseph Smith actually wrote himself into his own version of the Bible—by name.

Both prophets held up their own scripture as superior to the Bible. Mohammed claimed that the Koran was a perfect copy of the original which was in heaven. The Koran is therefore held to be absolutely perfect, far superior to the Bible and superceding it. In like manner, Joseph Smith also made the following claim. “I told the Brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding its precepts, than by any other book.”[3]

Despite their claim that the Bible was corrupt, both prophets admonished their followers to adhere to its teachings. An obvious contradiction, this led to selective acceptance of some portions and wholesale rejection of others. As a result, the Bible is accepted by both groups of followers only to the extent that it agrees with their prophet’s own superior revelation.

Both Mohammed and Joseph Smith taught that true salvation was to be found only in their respective religions. Those who would not accept their message were considered “infidels,” pagans or Gentiles. In so doing, both prophets became the enemy of genuine Christianity, and have led many people away from the Christ of the Bible.

Both prophets encountered fierce opposition to their new religions and had to flee from town to town because of threats on their lives. Both retaliated to this opposition by forming their own militias. Both ultimately set up their own towns as model societies.

Both Mohammed and Joseph Smith left unclear instructions about their successors. The majority of Mohammed’s followers, Sunni Muslims, believe they were to elect their new leader, whereas the minority, Shiite Muslims, believe Mohammed’s son was to be their next leader. Similarly, the majority of Joseph Smith’s followers, Mormons, believed their next prophet should have been the existing leader of their quorum of twelve apostles, whereas the minority, RLDS, believed Joseph Smith’s own son should have been their next prophet. Differences on this issue, and many others, have created substantial tension between these rival groups of each prophet.

Mohammed taught that Jesus was just another of a long line of human prophets, of which he was the last. He taught that he was superior to Christ and superceded Him. In comparison, Joseph Smith also made the following claim.

“I have more to boast of than ever any man had. I am the only man that has ever been able to keep a whole church together since the days of Adam. A large majority of the whole have stood by me. Neither Paul, John, Peter, nor Jesus ever did it. I boast that no man ever did such a work as I. The followers of Jesus ran away from Him, but the Latter-day Saints never ran away from me yet.”[4] In light of these parallels, perhaps Joseph Smith’s claim to be a second Mohammed unwittingly became his most genuine prophecy of all.

[1] Joseph Smith made this statement at the conclusion of a speech in the public square at Far West, Missouri on October 14, 1838. III, p. 162.”
