Well, who is Mormon in the Book of Mormon?
In Mormon 1:1, he says, "I, Mormon, make a record of the things which I have both seen and heard, and call it the Book of Mormon."
He says he is son of Mormon (1:5). And in the last chapter, he claims "we have written this record according to our knowledge, in the characters which are called among us the reformed Egyptian, being handed down and altered by us, according to our manner of speech." (9:32)
Tell us? Does "Mormon" sound like a Reformed Egyptian or Jewish name? What is even "Reformed Egyptian?" Is it a recognized language by anyone studying ancient people groups? Is the Book of Mormon historical? (No on all counts)
As for alternative sources, I haven't reached any conclusions due to lack of the chain of evidence.
Is anyone else saying the Mormo stuff besides Lewis? I mean, there’s some pretty wild stuff on his website.
Apparently there was a newspaper article that may/may not have been written by J. Smith in 1843 discounting the Mormo connection, so I reckon it has been around for a while.
