The Evangelical problem is anti-intellecutalism. http://christiansthinking.com/Content.asp?W=51&C=141&S=292

But in reality, Evangelical fundamentalists only make idols of their own minds by arrogantly pretending that no one understood the scriptures prior to 1517.

when they say the Scriptures are their final authority, what they are really saying is THEY are their final authority. They put themselves above the Scriptures by claiming they and no one else will or can decide what the Scriptures say.
Matthew 28 records Jesus giving His authority to the Church to TEACH, yet they feel no obligation to learn.
there can never be true unity of the Faith for these folks, for while they condemn the Pope and Church Councils, they set themselves up as their own pope and church council.
they feel the Holy Spirit will lead them, and if they feel led to believe something that no one believed for 16 centuries, oh well!
Christians know the Holy Spirit has been active in leading and protecting the Church for 2,000 years, not just the last 500!
