Because as we find all throughout the Bible, a popular religion is the TRUE religion, right? What we find in the Bible is that the TRUE religion must be historically grounded. In other words, spiritual truth is not distinct from historical (or any other kind of) truth.

Correct. Which is why appeals to “1.4 billion Catholics” are irrelevant. Popularity means nothing in terms of what is or is not a “real” church.
