COLUMBIA, S.C. — GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich is appealing to South Carolina's evangelical Christians with a direct and urgent message: Christians are under attack, and Republicans shouldn't trust Mitt Romney to oppose abortion at all times.
"We will not tolerate a speech dictatorship in this country against Christianity," the former House speaker told a crowd of 300 in Rock Hill, S.C., on Wednesday, railing against what he has called government intrusions on Catholic charities and other religious organizations.
Gingrich is one of three conservatives, along with former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and Texas Gov. Rick Perry, trying to rally evangelicals here to vote as a group in South Carolina's Jan. 21 primary and slow down Romney's rush to the nomination.
Former Massachusetts Gov. Romney has won the first two contests in the nomination process, in Iowa and New Hampshire, and has led recent polls here.
But South Carolina, where two-thirds of Republican voters told pollsters in 2008 that they attend church once a week and seven in 10 said they believed abortion should be illegal, could be a tougher venue for Romney.
Despite Romney's front-runner status, many conservatives aren't sold on him because of his record in relatively liberal Massachusetts, where he once supported abortion rights.....

That Romney lead in South Carolina was bought and paid for by his machine, but odds are it isn’t Evangelicals they bought so much as it was Democrats switching registrations to Independent.
It’s clear, by now, that Republicans don’t do their own nominatin’ (as Rick Perry would say). Liberal states who have no delegates to speak of do, along with conservative states that serve up open primaries, so liberals and the
“Independents” can do the votin’.

Isn't it possible that here at FR we're VERY conservative, and that folks who self-identify as conservative like him?
Why the conspiracy theories without evidence except feelings? Or is this poll another element in the conspiracy?
I think the problem is we haven't defined what a conservative truly is. Too much 'compassionate conservatism' and not enough strong, unapologetic conservatism.
Just because I don't like the prevailing wind doesn't mean I think it's some wide-ranging conspiracy. If you or anyone has facts to support this, I'd love to see it. But I have to admit, I'm a lot more conservative than most of the folks I know who don't support Obama.
I think one of the things we do wrong is stick with certain conservative faces when the people we have to convince don't like them. We need to find genuine conservatives who believe what they say and can communicate with non-conservatives. Otherwise we're just a tribe protecting its own and calling names at the very folks we're trying to convince to come our way.
It may give some measure of self-satisfaction, but it isn't going to give us real conservative victories.
We have to stop the radical and unstable, Mitt Romney who thinks that he marched with Martin Luther King, and thinks that he was still in College (instead of being a 30 something year old business man and a teacher of the practice) when his religion stopped it’s open racism shortly before Reagan was elected.
We have to stop a radical liberal who left the GOP because of Reagan winning the election, who spoke out against conservatism and Jesse Helms, and the Contract with America.
You don’t like Christians?
Conservatives have not been backing Romney during the past six years.
Don’t tell us that conservatives are driving his survival.

By your premise, the strict interpretation of the Constitution is VERY conservative, and revolves on “feelings” and conspiracy.
Hey, if you believe 11 delegates appearing from an OPEN primary in Iowa and New Hampshire are the definition of conservative enough for ya’ and those voters are enough to seal the deal for Romney; that we should roll over and fall in line, more power to you. In April, no less.
Conservative is no longer good enough if it means your pro-abortion, wobbly on abortion, appoint liberal judges, instigate socialist health care, happily sign off on gay marriage, etc., etc.
As for our candidates, they come from us. We’re no longer so stellar ourselves. That leaves us going into battle with the best we of what we have. I kinda get what you’re saying but the peril of the times requires us to drop the dreams and fight for the nearest to the “VERY” conservative
candidate, but one with the resume of rolling democrats, political combat experience, and MONEY.

Ansel, I did not know it was a perjorative- I apologize if I offended you or any one else- I didn’t intend to do so. At times, I tend to be glib (kinda like Ronald Reagan)- sorry. -:)

“Tim LaHaye today announced his support for former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich in a letter to South Carolina pastors. The nod from the powerful Christian leader is expected to give Gingrich a much needed boost over the next several weeks in the evangelical heavy Bible belt.”
And finally, I can’t post it since it’s from Huffington, but Newt’s Superpac just sent Romney a letter asking him to explain what the “lies” were in the ad. They said they would await his reply. Ha! Newt’s a riot.
The ad must have legs.
Sorry about jumping to a conclusion, usually though, ‘holy roller’ is an announcement of an attack to follow. It is used to mock Christians and is commonly the opening salvo.
