The term “protestant,” derived from the French
for “protesting”, refers primarily to churches whose theology is based on the principles of sola scriptura, i.e. that the Bible alone, and not the statements of church leaders, is the only source of doctrine. There were also forerunners of Protestantism, which predate Protestantism proper such as the Waldensians and the Lollards. Ever heard of them? There was a horrible slaughter of the Waldensians that killed the majority of them, but there was a remnant. There is a Waldensian Church in Valdese, NC, a town established by Waldensians. They settled there en masse a little over a century ago, after leaving the Cottian Alps of northern Italy due to ongoing restrictions and persecution against them there.
