A new Russian nuclear submarine has been named after Saint Aleksandr Nevsky of Russia, and will be fitted with its own Orthodox chapel after the vessel finishes its sea trials. It has become the second nuke-carrying sub equipped with a sanctuary in addition to ballistic missiles.
Veneration of Saint Alexander Nevsky as a saint began soon after his death. The remains of the prince were uncovered in response to a vision, before the Battle of Kulikovo in the year 1380, and found to be incorrupt. He was glorified (canonized) by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1547. His principal feast day is 23 November. By order of Peter the Great, Nevsky’s relics were transported to the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in St. Petersburg where they remain to this day
The military chapel on the submarine will allow sailors to attend religious services right on board during the sub’s long missions.
It is the sixth military chapel to consecrated into the Russian Navy. The other five were installed on the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov, the heavy cruiser Pyotr Veliky, Russian Navy sail training ship Kruzenshtern, guided missile cruiser Moskva, and nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine K-433 Svyatoy Georgiy Pobedonosets.

St. Aleksandr Nevsky is one of the very few martial saints we Orthodox venerate. Leaving aside Roman soldiers who were outed as secret Christians during the Imperial persecutions and died as martyrs as a result (St. George, St. Demetrius, the 40 Martyrs of Sebaste. . .) the only ones besides him who springs readily to mind is St. Lazar and St. Olaf (for those of us who follow St. John Maximovitch’s advice and have restored the veneration of Western saints from before the Latin schism, though some of us are minded also to venerate St. Harold, Last Orthodox King of England).

Well, one of the prophecies of the Elder Paisios (a Greek monk who reposed in 1994 and was know for prophetic gifts: he would sometimes tell people he had just me their sins, and foretold the Greek financial meltdown from 20 year before) is that alone among the nations of the world Russia will not fall under the domination of Antichrist because of the thousands of martyrs and confessors she had offered while suffering under the Bolsheviks. (There are older prophecies about a pious Russian tsar opposing Antichrist.)
Interesting choice. Nevsky’s the guy who beat the Teutonic Knights when he defended Novgorod [his city], by fighting them on a frozen lake.
But he’s also the Russian prince who made submission to Batu Quan. A sort of Quisling with blinis.
More freedom of religion in Russia than 9n U.S. Russia becoming like U.S. used to be; U.S. becoming like Russia used to be. Who’d have thought?

Strange—as America swings anti-Christian the Russians are embracing the Christian faith. Maybe we need to re-think the Liberal Claptrap that all religions are the same and that anti-religion, satanism, wicca, etc.. are all viable faiths. There will come a time when we will need those churches and the comfort and belief they inspire—How long will it be when there will be no chapels on US Navy ships?

It would be splendid to watch the film in a theater with live orchestral accompaniment.
Somehow I’m not surprised. The Rooskies are probably hoping for all the Divine help they can get with all the terrible accidents involving their subs in recent years.
Theodore the General was a martial saint. And St. Martin was also a soldier.
St. Theodore the General falls within the ellipsis after the 40 Martyrs of Sebaste in my post: I knew I wasn’t giving an exhaustive list of those who dies under pagan persecution. Yes, it was after the Edict of Milan, but some folks didn’t seem to get the message.
St. Martin of Tours is one I forgot.
