The story of Chuck Smith and Calvary Chapel is a little miracle in itself. Chuck was a young pastor and new to Calvary Chapel. The church had just installed new carpet, and Chuck happened to hear one of the elders telling some young hippies that they couldn't come in and walk on the new carpet barefoot. It could have cost him his much needed job, but he stopped the elder and turned to the kids and invited them in. He said "If I have to chose between new carpet and winning souls to Christ, I'll choose their souls."

Not only did those hippies come in and get saved, so did hundreds and hundreds of others. Calvary Chapel became the center of "creativity for Christ" in Southern California. Those kids were so talented, and created some of the best Christian music, art, drama around at the time. It was wonderful, and because of Chuck welcoming those young people, they came to Christ instead of getting into drugs, sex, and rock and roll as so many others their age did.

Chuck smith is a great teacher and man of God; he has cancer, we’ve been praying for him. We have his teachings going straight through the Bible tapes which my husband and I listen to together.

That summer of ‘71 I was pregnant with our second son living in Oregon and was saved and filled with The Holy Spirit. My husband and I together at home reading the Bible. We thought we grew up as Christians but we never knew Jesus personally until then. Later we went out to churches and made friends, ex hippies, all kinds.

That was during The Jesus movement and Late Great Planet Earth when many young people came to know Jesus and praise music was being sung. I know there are many Freepers remembering Calvary Chapel, Hal Lindsey, Christian Rock bands, Maranatha music albums, etc. Praise God he saved me. Praise God my grandfather prayed for my salvation while I was a child.
