Tattoos spread Montrose church's Lenten message
Houston Chronicle ^ | 2/23/12 | Kate Shellnutt

Asking his congregation to get permanent tattoos as a part of their Lenten observances may be one of the craziest things Ecclesia pastor Chris Seay has done at his artsy, pop-culture-savvy Montrose church.

Seay and Ecclesia's artist-in-residence, Scott Erickson, initially hoped to find 10 people to get inked with designs representing the Stations of the Cross, 10 moments that illustrate the story of Jesus' death.

The idea wasn't so crazy to the Ecclesia community, because about 50 of them answered Seay's call and have been tattooed with Erickson's custom-designed images of birds, hands, roses, trees and short phrases written in the traditional, Sailor Jerry-style tattoo text.

The tattoos will comprise an art exhibit for Lent, Stations on Skin, which opens at the church's Xnihilo Gallery on Saturday.

I saw the pictures. They’re ugly. I hate tattoos.

I don’t like it mostly because it appears to be a hip and trendy thing to do.

In the case of the Coptic Christians, its a true act of faith to mark themselves as Christian in a place where being Christian often means death.

Thank God, I was afraid they were Catholic. We’re bad enough without this flower-child, hippy-dippy, plastic banana fee-good crap.
I think it’s creepy to touch strangers at Mass.

Yes. It seems even Christians can be victimized by a low I.Q.
Sorry, but I despise tattoos.

Nothing screams “thug” in the case of males, or “slut” in the case of females, quite as loud as do tattoos.

Uhhhhh, pass.

You've got to see the pictures.
Make that double.

I know myself well enough to not want to make a permanent mark on myself.

Melville used tatoos in Moby Dick as an indicator of savagery. In general I agree with him!

That is the kind of thing, and immodesty too, that is totally unbiblical.

The congregation's website. First hit on "Montrose Church" takes you to the wrong place.

I have seen much worse. Their "what we believe", for instance, appears to be a fleshed out Apostles' Creed, which is miles ahead of a lot of what's out there.

Not my cup of tea, but I'll cut them some slack on that account.

These poor souls probably believe they have done something for Jesus. It’s heart-breaking.

Well, they’ll never be counted in with those “ashamed of Christ”

“By their fruits you shall know them.” Matthew 7:16

It’s artsy-fartsy but it ain’t biblical!

I work in the Montrose. It’s Houston’s version of the Castro. Any “church” in this neighborhood probably flies the rainbow banner and is probably full of tattooed, pierced homosexuals.

Leviticus 19:28: “Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD.”

So we have another moron minister ignoring the Bible. Why am I not surprised?

How many condemn them, and yet, many will bear the mark of the beast in fear and dread.

IMHO, these are devoted people. The designs may not be as some would like, but their hearts are true.

Another church-cult.
It will pass away when Seay does.

"The designs may not be as some would like, but their hearts are true." You know their hearts are right with God because they got tattoos? Surely you jest. But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart." (1 Samuel 16:7)

I loathe tattoos as well. A former girlfriend told me she wanted one. I kindly reminded her that they’re not called “classy” stamps, they’re called tramp stamps.
