Joint Methodist-Catholic Statement on Eucharist and Ecology

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has announced the publication of “Heaven and Earth Are Full of Your Glory: A United Methodist and Roman Catholic Statement on the Eucharist and Ecology.”

The statement’s authors acknowledge that “the sources of Catholic teaching about the Eucharist [are] not matched by similar sources for the United Methodist partners, and vice versa,” according to the document’s introduction. “As we present this agreed statement, we realize only too well its limitations … [and] fully realize that this statement does not reflect the breadth of what either church holds to be the total content of its Eucharistic belief or practice.”

“We believe that we can and should offer a joint prophetic witness on a significant challenge facing both our communions regarding the relation of humanity to the rest of the natural world,” the statement continues. “In our time, the appearance of the skies has become a sign of the times. The threat of climate destabilization, the destruction of the ozone layer, and the loss of bio-diversity point to a disordered relation between humankind, other living beings and the rest of earth. United Methodists and Roman Catholics have interpreted the signs of these times of ecological crisis as a summons to an ecumenical response.”

Following the document’s three main parts--“The Eucharist as the Unity of Creation and Redemption,” “Creation as the Mystery of Our Origin Encountered,” and “Eucharist as the Wholeness of the Christian Mystery Encountered”--the statement concludes:

If you are a member of a United Methodist Church, or contribute to a United Methodist Church, you are a member of or contribute to the Progressive Left.

More bird cage lining from the navel gazing buffoons at the USCCB.

As a United Methodist ordained minister, I really wish the liberals in my denomination wouldn’t be given air time by the Roman Catholics. These liberals in my denomination support open abortion, gay marriage, reimagined scripture, gay and female ordination, and religious syncretism.

Why on earth the RCC would be granting them any credibility at all really blisters me.

Eucharist and Ecology

VERY closely related topics ...

Both begin with the letter "E".

As Catholics our view of the world should be Christocentric. We care for and respect God’s creation because it is a witness to His glory. Nothing wrong with being good stewards and the right use of creation.

But the trap that is too often sprung is the one where the world is viewed as being Gaiacentric (for want of a better term) and ecological issues become excuses to diminish mankind and to try and deny the dignity of the human person.

Seems as though the Renewal movement is actually gaining some traction in the UMC. I was a subscriber to “Good News” back in the early 90s when it was just getting started. Lotta good stuff came out of Wilmore, KY.

I think they're confused about who really represents the UMC. Quite frankly, until I met you, I was of the opinion of mbarker12474 : that If you are a member of a United Methodist Church, or contribute to a United Methodist Church, you are a member of or contribute to the Progressive Left. -- whoever went to this conference on the Church's side seems to have not even known that.

My previous experience of Methodists was surprisingly only in the UK where they were shockingly liberal -- and the disrespect for the eucharist was apparent -- the hosts were passed around like candy and some that were dropped on the floor were swept away -- and the remainder was actually tossed into the waste. For a Catholic, even if we do not believe that this was consecrated, it showed intense disrepect to the Lord. I don't understand why the USCCB did this unless if it was to get political support against Obama. the statement seems to say nothing at all quite frankly

I found an article that clarifies this --> http://www.catholicculture.org/commentary/otc.cfm?id=959
The extent of the theological agreement of the parties is that the Eucharist has something to do with Creation and the environment. This proved fortuitous for the Methodists and Catholics involved, because their mutual concern for the environment actually gave them something to say together....
[W]e should offer a joint prophetic witness on a significant challenge facing both our communions regarding the relations of humanity to the rest of the natural world…. The threat of climate destabilization, the destruction of the ozone layer, and the loss of bio-diversity point to a disordered relation between humankind, other living beings, and the rest of the earth.
In other words, this is what we might call occasional theology. It is a set piece to celebrate a public occasion.

May I share something with you?

A good friend, devout in his Methodist belief, he recognizes
a lot of things Roman Catholic. He attends a Methodist
retreat for men each year, a copy of the Catholic Crosio.

I think he understands about the Real Presence, Our Lord
in the Eucharist but he won’t come all the way. Convert.
I know, I know, it’s God’s grace but if only....

This is my PO, I think Methodists will rush forward to
receive the Eucharist after the “awakening”, the Great
Warning. Methodists are open to Catholicism, more than
any of our brothers and sisters in Christ, say maybe
Episcopalians.

yeah, another inane announcement by the liberal staff at the office...bet you they didn’t ask the bishops themselves to read it before it was released.

There is a good argument to fire most of these people, who don’t represent either the bishops or Catholic laity...
