It’s something I never “got”. How could a parturient woman die of septic peritonitis in 1962? Without antibiotics? What the heck?

Beats me. Maybe she was allergic to penicillin or sulfa. My mother nearly died of pneumonia in the late ‘60s because of an allergy, and I’m allergic to sulfa, not that it’s used much these days.
