Keira Knightley Regrets Being Atheist (Not Really)
Skeptical Science ^ | 5-2-2012 | Dave Gamble

Actor Keira Knightley, a self-confessed atheist, says she is desperate to be Catholic because she would “just get to ask for forgiveness”. “It sounds much better than having to live with guilt. It’s absolutely extraordinary. If only I wasn’t an atheist, I could get away with anything,”

She’s still bashing Republicans, but she’s not quite as bad as people are making her out to be. The full quote in context makes it clear that she’s making fun of the idea that because you ask God for forgiveness, that makes what you did okay...and there are plenty of “Christians” who act that way. I know a few born-again Christians who absolutely believe that they can sin as much as they want as long as they ask God for forgiveness (but with intent to sin again).

“CRONENBERG: Except he’s got the right-wing Christian out: “I asked god for forgiveness and he said okay.” [laughs] If you’re a Christian right-wing Republican, then that might make it okay. But the thing is, Newt was the guy who was attacking Bill Clinton for his Monica Lewinsky moment while he himself was having an extramarital affair. So the hypocrisy is rather thick at that point.

KNIGHTLEY: Absolutely extraordinary . . . If only I wasn’t an atheist, I could get away with anything. You’d just ask for forgiveness and then you’d be forgiven. It sounds much better than having to live with guilt.”

So, snarky? Absolutely, but I highly doubt she was referring to all Christians, just the hypocrites. But maybe I’m wrong and she just hates all Christians.

She’s got a pretty face but she really needs to eat a few cheeseburgers once in a while

As an Atheist though, an invisible man in the sky is much more believable than her 89lb fighting female character in Arthur being able to take on multiple 250lb+ guys at the same time and win

Being an English actress and in her early twenties, I believe, it’s highly doubtful she knows who Monica Lewinsky is and I doubt she knows much about Newt Gingrich. So she goes along with the anti-Catholic bait she is being fed, which tells me what kind of person she is.

Ahhhh....to have enough money, fame, and doters so as to walk through life without ever having to listen to one’s own consciousness and thoughts and to fill life with all the frivolity and empty patter as to never look at life for what it is.

Striding through the sun-kissed streets of Hollywood where it never rains, where botox is the answer to aging, and where the nanny rushes to your aid when the little accessory in your stroller starts to become a nuisance.

Guilt? What guilt? Everyone loves you, wants to go out on Friday night. To the gay club. Perhaps do some blow.

Then you go join Amnesty International or do some charity event for some children’s disease to make you feel better and to give you something to talk about on Oprah, to show how much you care, how much value you have. You know, your Thursday morning fundraiser where you wear a pretty dress and get your picture taken by all your adoring fans who smile and laugh with you when you say nothing at all, having known nothing about you, and knowing even less once you’ve left their presence, but loving you more all the same.

It takes talent, Hollywood, you know.

If she’s an atheist, who does she believe is going to judge her? What does she need to be forgiven for?

She’s been sent there three (or is it four now?) times, but the pirates keep sending her back!

There one wrong and one folly here. The folly is for K Knightly to opine publically about a topic which she does not have the expertise to discuss. We all have the right to speak our mind but it is a tenet of wisdom that one not offer public opinions about subjects which one has not studied. The wrong was done when an interviewer asks an actress for an opinion about religion. An ethical interviewer would ask her about acting and not subjects like religion, particle physics, or robotics.
Perhaps the box office will clarify that for her.

Screwed around, had fun, wasted too-easily-earned wealth, slept with the bad boys, now wants the nice guy to come in and clean up her s***. Idiot.

Things like this make me wonder, will the parents who turned her into this dead soul have a worse time in Hell than their daughter?

I saw that movie recently, and I thought the same thing. Also, her little Xena warrior princess costume was so realistic. /s

The freaky part is that she feels guilty. Why? She can harm anyone she likes without guilt, because there is no punishment when there is no good and no evil.

She can be wantonly cruel, vicious, sadistic and vile. As an atheist the only punishment or even feelings she needs to concern herself with are those of other people, unless she can evade those as well.

If she wants, she can buy infants and bash their brains out on rocks. She can give boxes of poisoned candies to elderly people living in nursing homes.

She is free of God, but also free from morality and ethics. She can live as an animal if she chooses, and remake herself as a monster.

I would spank her nightly for agreeing to be in `Domino.’
She’s so skinny she could bathe in a shotgun barrel, kind of from the Ann Coulter school of modeling. Btw Ann C’s latest on immigration ain’t half bad. Hey look—a squirrel!

There was no mention of Catholicism specifically. I’m pretty used to the Catholic-bashing, but in this case it was just the general “Christian,” and while Catholics fall into that category, I wouldn’t call it anti-Catholic even if she really did mean to slight anyone who’s Christian.

She’s two years older than I am, and the Monica Lewinsky thing was a pretty big deal. I’m guessing she knows about the scandal, especially since the Europeans tend to think Clinton is the savior of the world (unless they think Obama is the savior of the world) and make a huge deal about how puritanical Americans are for trying to impeach Clinton for his escapades (they willfully fail to understand that he committed perjury). But I am betting she knows nothing about Newt and just took the guy’s word on how Newt behaves (and if she doesn’t know anything about Newt, she certainly doesn’t know what denomination he belongs to).

I’m not trying to say she’s fantastic and how dare anyone criticize her, because she is definitely a liberal who thinks America is a backwards conservative wasteland. She’s far too willing to take anything that supports that viewpoint at face value, because she’s a sheep. I just think she’s been taken out of context in this case.

She just snarked at Christians for believing in forgiveness. Finds it a convenient out. So, what’s her punishment for doing bad things as an atheist? She says ‘if only’. Atheists have guilt? Why? They don’t believe in God, so they can’t believe in right or wrong or sin. So ignorant of Christianity it’s pitiful. I pity your ignorance of grace, Keira.
