...and/or "religious bigotry" -- whereby people vote ONLY or PRIMARILY based upon the other-worldly worldviews of a candidate...
...they don't apply that same provocation toward Mormons when they vote ONLY or PRIMARILY based upon the other-worldly worldviews of a candidate (Romney)...

Either they should...
...stay silent on BOTH counts...
...or, if they're going to get riled re: comments-about-voting that include Romney's Mormonism, then they may want to exercise some consistency and comment negatively upon Mormons who vote for Romney ONLY or PRIMARILY due to his Mormonism.

We're talking political choices, not conversion of beliefs.

Yep. And we're not electing a national pastor.

It is also nigh on impossible to completely know anyone's religious beliefs and how sincerely or deeply their are held.

We can know whether they profess to be a member of a particular church or religious organization and infer from there. It might be interesting to consider which organizations whose members we would not vote for - based on that membership alone.

Two I can think of for myself would be Scientology and Satanism.

That's not hypocrisy, that's calling it like it is and besides, we're at war with Islam, no matter how much the liberal talking heads would like you to believe it's a war against 'terrorism'.

After the Lds declared a statement on polygamy in 1890, it went on to secretly solemnize about 250 or more additional plural marriages 'tween 1890 - 1910 (Source: See B. Carmon Hardy's A Solemn Covenant list in his appendix for Who's Who)

One of those was B.H. Roberts...who took a third wife around 1893. Utah then elected Roberts to represent their new state in 1898. Congress rejected Roberts; sent him back home -- because -- as you mentioned above w/regard to Muslims...Mormons in the 1890s (& prior) "ignored the laws of our land" re: monogamy vs. polygamy.

So, I take it then -- as we look back on history & also apply consistent applications -- that you retro-actively agreed with Congress' shutting out this Mormon Congressman from office back in 1898 re: B.H. Roberts?

Also...since EVERY Mormon "prophet" up until 1945 was a polygamist, I would also take it that as long as Mormonism was still embracing polygamy, you would agree that no Mormon was "worthy" to hold any Cabinet post...again because, via polygamy, they were "igoring the laws of our land"(?) IOW, you would agree that no Mormon was worthy of a Cabinet position thru 1944?

Are we discussing cults, politics or political cults?

Given these quotes of Mormon leaders, where has Mormonism backed off theocratical leanings within politics? (I don't see it; where -- and why -- do you de-link the two when Mormon leaders have not?)

Your Q is intended for Elz, but I'll toss in my perspective here:

Here's how I would frame it: Question A at hand: Are we voting for a 'pastor-in-chief' or commander-in-chief?
Principle (A): This question addresses not only the role and identity of the POTUS, but the perceived 'self' identity of the candidate. If a given candidate thinks he's a 'god' or 'would-be' god, he exposes himself as deceived on one of the most basic elemental identity issues you can think of.

If a candidate doesn't even know who he is fundamentally, and inwardly lauds himself as 'divine,' why would we want to reinforce such an idolater who steals glory from the One True God?

Principle B also deals with Question A, but from a distinct angle: Is a POTUS a 'minister' of sorts?

Many say 'no.'

I say 'yes,' and here's why:

Even non-religious people tend to at times honor the Bible. The Biblical record shows that true successful leadership in public office is done by those who fear the TRUE Lord -- not by some low-level Mormon god who is part of a great number of Mormon gods...

And these Biblical leaders did not -- or were not to -- worship false gods/idols. The Old Testament is replete w/ such examples. The Israelites had kings leaning toward a secular model vs. "pastors in chief." But that didn't mean that these kings' ministrations were any less a "ministry." Romans 13 makes it clear that public office is also a "ministry." Those who contend against this are openly militating against this Scripture.

It doesn't mean that public officeholders administrate in a parochial way; it just means that public office is a "ministry of service" like the soup kitchen down the street. History (biblical & otherwise) shows that the more pagan or counterfeit god that a leader adheres to, the more trouble that leader's "exhaust" settles on the people-at-large. Kings & presidents need all the grace, mercy, & guidance possible, since God gets more credit for preserving & directing leaders than we care to give Him credit for. Therefore, one who worships a false god & has no true relationship w/the living God is stifling access to God's resources; & a nation may suffer for that.
