Qusayr (Agenzia Fides) - Exodus of Christians in the west of Syria: the Christian population has left the town of Qusayr, near Homs, following an ultimatum from the military chief of the armed opposition, Abdel Salam Harba. This is what local sources of Fides report, indicating that, following the outbreak of the conflict, out of the ten thousand faithful who lived in the town, only a thousand have remained, who have now been forced to flee in haste to fury.
Some mosques in the city have re-launched the message, announcing from the minarets: "Christians must leave Qusayr within six days, which expires this Friday." The ultimatum, therefore, expired yesterday, June 8, and produced fear among the Christian population who had begun to hope again after the presence of Father Paolo Dall'Oglio, the Jesuit who stayed in Qusayr for a week, with the idea of "praying and fasting for peace in the midst of the conflict" (see Fides 30/5/2012).

In the fall of 1963, Richard Nixon expressed a similar viewpoint when the authoritarian regime of South Vietnamese president Ngo Dinh Diem came under attack in the press. Nixon remarked on at least two occasions that the choice was not between Diem and someone better but Diem and someone worse. After Diem was overthrown and killed in November, 1963, we found out that Nixon was right.
This is also true in today's Middle East. It looks as though Mubarak and Qaddafi were replaced by regimes that are even worse, and the same may be true for Syria.
This is who McCain wants to support.

Our actions and support have ended Christianity in a number of countries, how long till there is a movement to make the US openly islamic?
In geopolitical terms, the Syrian Christians need an independent state. One along the Lebanese/Golan border would be nice, and we (Israel) ought to recognize it, along with Greater Kurdistan. As for Assad, the MB, etc., the more harm they do each other, the better. Let them have a diminished state to fail in and become useless to Iran, and let them beat each other bloody. The Eastern Minorities’ Alliance (EMA) would help keep them contained.
Israel needs to speak out for the rights of Christians. Right now, anti-Israeli priests are pushing the message that it is all the fault of the Jews, even as Arab Muslims force Christians back into dhimmitude.
There is a huge problem among Christians, in that they are bifurcated. Those churches in developed nations are utterly clueless as to what is going on in the East and in Africa. It’s as if nothing is real to them unless they see it on TV. So they ignore the persecution of Christians, try to be trendy and “liberal,” and make themselves worse than irrelevant. Those Christian churches right there in the storm, in Bethlehem, Darfur, Syria and Egypt, don’t have that luxury. But since they never happen on TV, they don’t exist as far as their more fortunate brethren are concerned, and they can go on trying to be “inclusive” and have their “interfaith dialogues” with Muslims, until their time comes.
Syrian Christians making their own state on the borderlands might just break into the news. They can be leaving Syria, right until the point where they take possession of the Syrian Golan Heights and turn what might have been another refugee camp into an armed camp with the help of Israel, and start setting up a defensible frontier. The talking hairdos will show up, and they can give them an eyeful and an earful of what they’ve been through. This might help wake up the western Christian churches to their peril.
Definitely, Israel needs to get more active with this natural ally.
That is a very good idea. It would be perfect to have a Christian buffer state in southern Syria - southern Lebanon.
They’d be under attack, of course, but for a change able to fight back with both proverbial barrels and a strong, experienced ally to trust their back to. And they will have done exactly what the MB said and left Syria;-)
This is what Israel should be doing in the region, instead of relentlessly following the ill-advised, delusional instructions of Washington. Our best allies are all around us.
A Palestinian Christian state would still not be friendly to Israel, but they won't send suicide bombers so would be a good buffer state -- I think it's too late for that too, with the dwindling numbers of Christians there
The Druze don’t need to be a state. Their religion dictates loyalty to the state they’re in. The Golan Druze will become more loyal to Israel as soon as Israel makes it unequivocally clear that we’re not giving the Golan back to Syria, ever.
