Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

 

Reading 1 Hos 11:1, 3-4, 8c-9

Thus says the LORD:
When Israel was a child I loved him,
out of Egypt I called my son.
Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk,
who took them in my arms;
I drew them with human cords,
with bands of love;
I fostered them like one
who raises an infant to his cheeks;
Yet, though I stooped to feed my child,
they did not know that I was their healer.

My heart is overwhelmed,
my pity is stirred.
I will not give vent to my blazing anger,
I will not destroy Ephraim again;
For I am God and not a man,
the Holy One present among you;
I will not let the flames consume you.

Responsorial Psalm Is 12:2-3, 4, 5-6.

R. (3) You will draw water joyfully from the springs of salvation.
God indeed is my savior;
I am confident and unafraid.
My strength and my courage is the LORD,

Reading 2 Eph 3:8-12, 14-19

Brothers and sisters:
To me, the very least of all the holy ones, this grace was given,
to preach to the Gentiles the inscrutable riches of Christ,
and to bring to light for all what is the plan of the mystery
hidden from ages past in God who created all things,
so that the manifold wisdom of God
might now be made known through the church
to the principalities and authorities in the heavens.
This was according to the eternal purpose
that he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord,
in whom we have boldness of speech
and confidence of access through faith in him.

For this reason I kneel before the Father,
from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named,
that he may grant you in accord with the riches of his glory
to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner self,
and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith;
that you, rooted and grounded in love,
may have strength to comprehend with all the holy ones
what is the breadth and length and height and depth,
and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge,
so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Gospel Jn 19:31-37

Since it was preparation day,
in order that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath,
for the sabbath day of that week was a solemn one,
the Jews asked Pilate that their legs be broken
and they be taken down.
So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first
and then of the other one who was crucified with Jesus.
But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead,
they did not break his legs,
but one soldier thrust his lance into his side,
and immediately blood and water flowed out.
An eyewitness has testified, and his testimony is true;
he knows that he is speaking the truth,
so that you also may come to believe.
For this happened so that the Scripture passage might be fulfilled:
Not a bone of it will be broken.
And again another passage says:
They will look upon him whom they have pierced.

The warrior’s arrow sharpened *
and coals, red-hot, blazing.

Alas, that I abide a stranger in Meshech, *
dwell among the tents of Kedar!

Long enough have I been dwelling *
with those who hate peace.
I am for peace, but when I speak, *
they are for fighting.

Psalm Prayer

You declared peacemakers happy, Lord Jesus, since they will be called sons of God. Give us that peace which the world cannot give so that your Church may be freed from the schemes of arrogant men, and, devoted to works of peace, go forward joyfully to meet you, the King of Peace.

Psalm 121
Guardian of his people

Never again will they hunger and thirst, never again know scorching heat (Revelation 7:16).

I lift up my eyes to the mountains; *
from where shall come my help?
My help shall come from the Lord *
who made heaven and earth.

May he never allow you to stumble! *
Let him sleep not, your guard.
No, he sleeps not nor slumbers, *
Israel’s guard.

The Lord is your guard and your shade; *
at your right side he stands.
By day the sun shall not smite you *
nor the moon in the night.

The Lord will guard you from evil, *

Holy city Jerusalem

You have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, heavenly Jerusalem (Hebrews 12:22).

I rejoiced when I heard them say: *
“Let us go to God’s house.”
And now our feet are standing *
within your gates, O Jerusalem.

Jerusalem is built as a city *
strongly compact.
It is there that the tribes go up, *
the tribes of the Lord.

For Israel’s law it is, *
there to praise the Lord’s name.
There were set the thrones of judgment *
of the house of David.

For the peace of Jerusalem pray: *
“Peace be to your homes!
May peace reign in your walls, *
in your palaces, peace!”

For love of my family and friends *
I say: “Peace upon you.”
For love of the house of the Lord *
I will ask for your good.

When you rose from the dead, Lord Jesus, you formed the Church into your new body, and made of it the new Jerusalem, united in your Spirit. Give us peace in our day. when men rose against us,
then would they have swallowed us alive *
when their anger was kindled.

Then would the waters have engulfed us, *
the torrent gone over us;
over our head would have swept *

Blessed be the Lord who did not give us *
a prey to their teeth!
Our life, like a bird, has escaped *
from the snare of the fowler.

Indeed the snare has been broken *
and we have escaped.

The Lord, guardian of his people

Peace to God’s true Israel (Galatians 6:16).

Those who put their trust in the Lord
are like Mount Zion, that cannot be shaken, *
that stands for ever.

Jerusalem!  The mountains surround her,
so the Lord surrounds his people *
both now and for ever.

For the scepter of the wicked shall not rest  *
over the land of the just
for fear that the hands of the just *
should turn to evil.

Do good, Lord, to those who are good, *
to the upright of heart;
but the crooked and those who do evil, *
drive them away!

Joyful hope in God

Just as you share in sufferings so you will share in the divine glory (2 Corinthians 1:7).

When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage, *
it seemed like a dream.

The heathens themselves said: “What marvels *
the Lord worked for them!”
What marvels the Lord worked for us! *
Indeed we were glad.

your going later to rest,
you who toil for the bread you eat: *
when he pours gifts on his beloved while they slumber.

Truly sons are a gift from the Lord, *

You command the seed to rise, Lord God, though the farmer is unaware. Grant that those who labor for you may trust not in their own work but in your help. Remembering that the land is brought to flower not with human tears but with those of your Son, may the Church rely only upon your gifts.

Happiness of family life rooted in God

“May the Lord bless you from Zion” refers to the Church (Arnobius).

O blessed are you those fear the Lord *
and walk in his ways!

By the labor of your hands you shall eat. *
You will be happy and prosper;
your wife like a fruitful vine *
in the heart of your house;
your children like shoots of the olive, *
around your table.

Indeed thus shall be blessed *
the man who fears the Lord.
May the Lord bless you from Zion *

If God is for us, who can be against us? Is it possible that he who did not spare his own Son but handed him over for the sake of us all will not grant us all things besides? Christ Jesus, who died or rather was raised up, who is at the right hand of God and who intercedes for us? Who will separate us from the love of Christ?

I had NO idea that the full prayer to St Michael was altered like that. I've been clicking and reading links for an hour at least about it. I'm amazed and shocked.

(I never did like all that happened with Vatican II, it just didn't 'sound' right as to the little I heard (I was a young teen when it started). Now I know why.)

History of the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Devotion to the Sacred Heart is a form of devotion to the person Jesus, and especially to His Love.

The Catholic Encyclopedia details a history of this devotion. It observed that from the time of Saint John and Saint Paul there has always been in the Church something like devotion to the love of God, Who so loved the world as to give it His only-begotten Son, and to the love of Jesus, Who has so loved us as to deliver Himself up for us. But, accurately speaking, this is not the devotion to the Sacred Heart, as it pays no homage to the Heart of Jesus as the symbol of His love for us. From the earliest centuries, Christ's open side and the mystery of blood and water were meditated upon, and the Church was beheld issuing from the side of Jesus, as Eve came forth from the side of Adam. But there is nothing to indicate that, during the first ten centuries, any worship was rendered the wounded Heart.

It is in the eleventh and twelfth centuries that we find the first unmistakable indications of devotion to the Sacred Heart. Through the wound in the side the wounded Heart was gradually reached , and the wound in the Heart symbolized the wound of Divine Love. In the Benedictine and Cistercian monasteries devotion arose, although it is impossible to say what where the first texts. Saint Gertrude (d. 1302) had a vision on the feast of John the Evangelist. She was resting her head near the wound in the Savior's side and hearing the beating of the Divine Heart. She asked Saint John if on the night of the Last Supper, he had felt these delightful pulsations, why he had never spoken of the fact. Saint John replied that this revelation had been reserved for subsequent ages when the world, having grown cold, would have need of it to rekindle its love.

From the thirteenth to the sixteeenth century, the devotion was practiced as a private, individual devotion of the mystical order. In the sixteenth century, the devotion took an onward step and passed from the domain of mysticism into that of Christian asceticism. It was constituted an objective devotion with prayers already formulated and special exercises of which the value was extolled and practice commended.

The devotion to the Sacred Heart developed further during the seventeenth century. Ascetic writers spoke of it, especially those of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), Alvarez de Paz, Luis de la Puente, Saint-Jure and Nouet and Father Druzbicki, small work "Meta Cordium, Cor Jesu".

The devotion was greatly increased by the visions Sister Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647-1690), a French Visitandine nun at the convent of Paray-le-Monial. She had a vision of Christ's Heart on the feast of Saint John that was similiar to that of Saint Gertrude. Jesus permitted her to rest her head upon His Heart, and then disclosed to her the wonders of His love, telling her that He desired to make this known to mankind and to diffuse the treasures of His goodness, and that He had chosen her for this work, (probably 1673, Dec. 27). In June or July o f 1674, Sister Margaret Mary said, Jesus asked to be honored under the figure of His Heart of Flesh and asked for a devotion of expiatory love -- frequent Communion, Communion on the first Friday of each month and the observance of Holy Hours.

In another visioin, on the feast of Corpus Christi 1675, Sister Margaret Mary reported that Jesus told her, "Behold the Heart that has so loved men...instead of gratitude I receive from the greater part (of mankind) only ingratitude..." Jesus then asked for a feast of reparation on the Friday after the octave of Corpus Christi. bidding her to consult Father de la Colombiére, then superior of the small Jesuit house at Paray. He recognized the action of the Spirit of God and consecrated himself to the Sacred Heart and directed Sister Margaret Mary to write down her account and to circulate it throughout France and England. Sister Margaret Mary Alacoque was canonized in the 20th century.

Twentieth Century Popes Promote Devotion to Sacred Heart

On May 25 1899, Pope Leo XIII, in his encyclical Annum Sacrum, declared that all Catholics should consecrate themselves to the Christ's Sacred Heart, and his intention to solemnly consecrate all mankind to the Sacred Heart of Jesus -- although the Pope pointed out that this would simply be giving Christ what is already His:

"[In His infinite goodness and love, He in no way objects to our giving and consecrating to Him what is already His, as if it were really our own; nay, far from refusing such an offering, He positively desires it and asks for it: "My son, give me thy heart." We are, therefore, able to be pleasing to Him by the good will and the affection of our soul. For by consecrating ourselves to Him we not only declare our open and free acknowledgment and acceptance of His authority over us, but we also testify that if what we offer as a gift were really our own, we would still offer it with our whole heart. We also beg of Him that He would vouchsafe to receive it from us, though clearly His own. Such is the efficacy of the act of which We speak, such is the meaning underlying Our words.

"And since there is in the Sacred Heart a symbol and a sensible image of the infinite love of Jesus Christ which moves us to love one another, therefore is it fit and proper that we should consecrate ourselves to His most Sacred Heart - an act which is nothing else than an offering and a binding of oneself to Jesus Christ, seeing that whatever honor, veneration and love is given to this divine Heart is really and truly given to Christ Himself. "

MISERENTISSIMUS REDEMPTOR -- Encyclical of Pope Pius XI ON REPARATION TO THE SACRED HEART, May 8, 1928 Pope Pius XI (also on the Vatican Website)

On May 15, 1956 Pope Pius XII wrote The Sacred Heart Encyclical, The Doctrinal Foundations of Devotions to the Sacred Heart in Scripture, Tradition and the Liturgy.

Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus continued to grow among pious Catholics until the early 1960s, when private devotions like this fell into sharp decline. Some believed these devotions were a distraction from the Mass.

In December 2001, the Holy See issued a Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy (complete on Vatican web site) which encourages popular devotions as an authentic means of meditation on the mysteries of the Eucharist and of drawing people to a personal understanding of Christ's love and the meaning of His sacrifice. About the Sacred Heart devotion, the Directory said, in part,

"Devotion to the Sacred Heart is a wonderful historical expression of the Church's piety for Christ, her Spouse and Lord: it calls for a fundamental attitude of conversion and reparation, of love and gratitude, apostolic commitment and dedication to Christ and his saving work." (§172)

Pope John Paul II Focuses on the Heart of Jesus

On Sunday, June 24, 2002 Pope John Paul II's address before he prayed the Angelus with the faithful in St. Peter's Square explained the devotion to the Sacred Heart as follows:

Dear Brothers and Sisters!

1. The month of June is singled out, in a particular way, for devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. To celebrate the Heart of Christ means to turn toward the profound center of the Person of the Savior, that center which the Bible identifies precisely as his Heart, seat of the love that has redeemed the world.

If the human heart represents an unfathomable mystery that only God knows, how much more sublime is the heart of Jesus, in which the life of the Word itself beats. In it, as suggested by the beautiful Litanies of the Sacred Heart that echo the Scriptures, are found all the treasures of wisdom and science and all the fullness of divinity.

In order to save man, victim of his own disobedience, God wished to give him a "new heart," faithful to his will of love (see Jeremiah 31:33; Ezekiel 36:26; Psalm 50[51]:12). This heart is the heart of Christ, the masterpiece of the Holy Spirit, which began to beat in the virginal womb of Mary and was pierced by the lance on the cross, thus becoming for all the inexhaustible source of eternal life. That Heart is now the pledge of hope for every man.

2. How necessary for contemporary humanity is the message that flows from contemplation of the heart of Christ. Where, indeed, if not from that source will it be able to attain the reserves of meekness and forgiveness necessary to heal the bitter conflicts that bloody it?

Today I would like to entrust in a special way to the merciful heart of Jesus all those who live in the Holy Land: Jews, Christians and Muslims. That Heart that, burdened with insult, never nourished sentiments of hatred and vengeance, but asked for forgiveness for his executioners, that Heart shows the only way to emerge from the spiral of violence: the way of pacification of spirits, of reciprocal understanding and reconciliation.

3. Together with the merciful heart of Christ we venerate the Immaculate Heart of Mary Most Holy, Mediatrix of grace and salvation.

We turn to her now with faith to implore for mercy and peace for the Church and the whole world.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Last Friday we celebrated the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, a devotion that is deeply rooted in the Christian people. In biblical language, "heart" indicates the centre of the person where his sentiments and intentions dwell. In the Heart of the Redeemer we adore God's love for humanity, his will for universal salvation, his infinite mercy.

Practicing devotion to the Sacred Heart of Christ therefore means adoring that Heart which, after having loved us to the end, was pierced by a spear and from high on the Cross poured out blood and water, an inexhaustible source of new life.

The feast of the Sacred Heart is also World Day for the Sanctification of Priests, a favorable opportunity to pray that priests will put nothing before love of Christ. Blessed Bishop Giovanni Battista Scalabrini, patron of migrants, was deeply devoted to the Heart of Christ; we commemorated the centenary of his death on June 1. He founded the men and women Missionaries of St Charles Borromeo, known as the "Scalabrinians", to proclaim the Gospel among Italian emigrants.

In recalling this great Bishop, I turn my thoughts to those who are far from their homeland and also often from their family, and I hope that on their way they will always meet friendly faces and welcoming hearts that can sustain them in the difficulties of daily life.

The heart that resembles that of Christ more than any other is without a doubt the Heart of Mary, his Immaculate Mother, and for this very reason the liturgy holds them up together for our veneration. Responding to the Virgin's invitation at Fatima, let us entrust the whole world to her Immaculate Heart, which we contemplated yesterday in a special way, so that it may experience the merciful love of God and know true peace.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

On this Sunday, which coincides with the beginning of June, I am pleased to recall that this month is traditionally dedicated to the Heart of Christ, symbol of the Christian faith, particularly dear to the people, to mystics and theologians because it expresses in a simple and authentic way the "good news" of love, compendium of the mystery of the Incarnation and Redemption. Last Friday, after the Most Holy Trinity and Corpus Christi, we celebrated the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the third and last feast following Eastertide. This sequence calls to mind a movement toward the centre: a movement of the spirit which God himself guides. In fact, from the infinite horizon of his love, God wished to enter into the limits of human history and the human condition. He took on a body and a heart. Thus, we can contemplate and encounter the infinite in the finite, the invisible and ineffable Mystery in the human Heart of Jesus, the Nazarene. In my first Encyclical on the theme of love, the point of departure was exactly "contemplating the pierced side of Christ", which John speaks of in his Gospel (cf. 19: 37; Deus Caritas Est, n. 12). And this centre of faith is also the font of hope in which we have been saved, the hope that I made the object of my second Encyclical.

Every person needs a "centre" for his own life, a source of truth and goodness to draw from in the daily events, in the different situations and in the toil of daily life. Every one of us, when he/she pauses in silence, needs to feel not only his/her own heartbeat, but deeper still, the beating of a trustworthy presence, perceptible with faith's senses and yet much more real: the presence of Christ, the heart of the world. Therefore, I invite each one of you to renew in the month of June his/her own devotion to the Heart of Christ, also using the traditional prayer of the daily offering and keeping present the intentions I have proposed for the whole Church.

Next to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the liturgy invites us to venerate the Immaculate Heart of Mary. With great confidence let us entrust ourselves to her. Once again I would like to invoke the maternal intercession of the Virgin for the populations of China and Myanmar struck by natural calamities and for those who are going through the many situations of pain, sickness, material and spiritual poverty that mark humanity's path.

Hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us.

But God shows his love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we are now justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. Family Activities for the Feast of the Sacred Heart

1. Help the children make a small "shrine" or a table decoration with a statue or picture of the Sacred Heart. Decorate with flowers or candles. A fine family observance would be to say together the Litany of the Sacred Heart as prayers before bedtime. If the children are very small, you might abbreviate it somewhat. It would be most effective to say the Litany before an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, either a picture or a statue.

2. Suggest that children make a list of several acts of charity and mercy, representing Jesus' love for us, and write them on cut-out hearts. Each child to might pick one of these acts to perform for a family member each day of the coming week, as a special act of unity in love with the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

3. Cut out a large paper heart of white paper, and have the children draw a picture with crayons or markers on the heart of Jesus showing His love by healing the blind and lame, or feeding the hungry, or evenof Jesus on the Cross, giving His very life for us, for our salvation. Display the hearts on the refrigerator, or tape them on the door of the children's rooms.

4. Bake a heart-shaped cake or cookies. Make the decorations simple enough so that the children can help. See Valentine Page for Heart shaped cookies. A heart-shaped cake to celebrate the Feast of the Sacred Heart would have a single candle, representing the Light of Christ.

Born 1579, Died 1601. Beatified May 7, 1864 and Canonized June 29, 1867 by Pope Pius IX

Saint Germaine Cousin (pronounced coo-zan) was the child of a poor farmer, born in 1579 at Pibrac, France, north of Toulouse. Her mother died when she was an infant. Her father remarried and her step family was very cruel to her. She had to sleep in a stable, was scalded with hot water, was beaten and was fed scraps of food. She was born with a deformed hand and had the disease of scrofula. Despite her misfortunes she shared her daily allowance of bread with the poor and practiced many austerities as reparation for the sacrileges perpetrated by heretics in the neighboring churches.

At age nine she became a shepherdess. She prayed the Rosary on "beads" she made of knotted string. Her piety increased on the approach of every feast of Our Lady. She gathered children of the village to teach them the cathechism (using the Rosary) and to instill in them the love of Jesus and Mary. Her devotion to the Angelus was so great that she would fall on her knees at the sound of the bells, even if she were crossing a stream. She attended daily Mass, leaving the sheep in the care of her guardian angel. The wolves never harmed the sheep while she was away. She always went to Mass, rain or snow. On occasions the swollen waters were seen to open so that she could cross to get to church with getting wet.

She died in 1601 at the age of 22.

O Saint Germaine, look down from Heaven and intercede for the many abused children in our world. Help them to sanctify these sufferings. Strengthen children who suffer the effects of living in broken families. Protect those children who have been abandoned by their parents and live in the streets. Beg God's mercy on the parents who abuse their children. Intercede for handicapped children and their parents.

Saint Germaine, you who suffered neglect and abuse so patiently, pray for us. Amen +

St. Germaine of Pibrac

Feast Day: June 15
Born: 1579 :: Died: 1601

Pibrac is the little village in France where Germaine was born and where she spent her whole life. Her father Laurent Cousin was a farm worker and her mother Marie Laroche died when Germaine was just a baby.

She was always a sickly girl and not pretty. In fact, she suffered from scrofula and her right hand was deformed and helpless. Her father ignored her and her stepmother Hortense did not want Germaine around her own healthy children. Hortense and her children treated Germaine very badly. She was only given scraps of food, was forced to sleep in a cupboard under the stairs and had hot water thrown on her if she disobeyed.

So Germaine slept with the sheep in the barn, even in cold weather. She dressed in rags and was laughed at by other children. By the time she was nine she was put to work as a shepherdess and spent all day tending the sheep out in the fields. When she came home at night, her stepmother often screamed at her and beat her.

Yet this poor girl learned to talk with God and to remember that he was with her all the time. She spent much time praying and made herself a rosary with knotted string. She always managed to get to daily Mass leaving her sheep in care of her guardian angel. Not once did a sheep wander away from her shepherd's staff that she planted in the ground.

Germaine often gathered young children around her to teach them simple catechism. She wanted their hearts to be full of God's love. She tried her best to help the poor, too and shared with beggars the little bit of food she was given to eat.

One winter day, her stepmother accused her of stealing bread. Hortense chased her with a stick and Germaine immediately opened her apron to return the food. To everyone's surprise what fell from Germaine's apron was not bread but summer flowers.

Now people no longer made fun of Germaine but began to treat her as a holy person. In fact, they loved and admired her. Her parents asked her to return and live with them in the house, but she chose to continue sleeping in the barn.

Then, one morning in 1601, when she was twenty-two, she was found dead on her straw mattress. Her life of great suffering was over. God worked more than four hundred miracles in her name to show that she was a saint.

Reflection: In our sufferings, we can always turn to Jesus and ask him to remain in our heart especially when we receive him in Holy Communion.

Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

"I promise you in the excessive mercy of my Heart that my all-powerful love will grant to all those who receive Holy Communion on the First Fridays in nine consecutive months the grace of final perseverance; they shall not die in my disgrace, nor without receiving their sacraments. My divine Heart shall be their safe refuge in this last moment" (Jesus to St. Margaret Mary).

Sixteenth century Calvinism and seventeenth century Jansenism preached a distorted Christianity that substituted for God's love and sacrifice of His Son for all men the fearful idea that a whole section of humanity was inexorably damned.

The Church always countered this view with the infinite love of our Savior who died on the cross for all men. The institution of the feast of the Sacred Heart was soon to contribute to the creation among the faithful of a powerful current of devotion which since then has grown steadily stronger. The first Office and Mass of the Sacred Heart were composed by St. John Eudes, but the institution of the feast was a result of the appearances of our Lord to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque in 1675. The celebration of the feast was extended to the general calendar of the Church by Pius IX in 1856.

The Congregation for the Clergy has today to be the World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests.

Here is the message to all priests explaining this important day: It Is on Prayer That the Effectiveness of Action Depends and the Prayers for Priests, both for priests to say for themselves, and for lay people to say for priests.

Today according to the Extraordinary Rite is also the feast of Saints Vitus, Modestus, and Crescentia, martyrs. Their feasts are superseded by the Solemnity.


Close to the Heart of the Son is the Heart of the Mother
The Church, in this month of June, giving us the solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, wishes us to understand the consequential devotion to Our Lady traditionally lived in the Marian month par excellence: the month of May. The Heart of Jesus is the See and Throne of Divine Mercy, revealed to the world in the passion, death and resurrection of Christ.

The Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI speaking of the solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus two years ago said: “In biblical language, "heart" indicates the centre of the person where his sentiments and intentions dwell. In the Heart of the Redeemer we adore God's love for humanity, his will for universal salvation, his infinite mercy. Practising devotion to the Sacred Heart of Christ therefore means adoring that Heart which, after having loved us to the end, was pierced by a spear and from high on the Cross poured out blood and water, an inexhaustible source of new life” (Benedict XVI, Angelus 5 June 2005).

The call which comes from this important feast day is first of all a call to Eucharistic adoration, because in the Sacred Host the Lord Jesus is truly present and He offers each of us His Heart, His Merciful Love. To spend time in the Presence of the Eucharistic Lord, to adore Him, is the best expression of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus which, as we know, spread all over the world thanks to Jesus' revelations to Saint Margherita M. Alacoque in the 17th century: “Behold the Heart which so loved mankind”!

As a prolongation and accomplishment of this message, the Lord appeared to another Sister in the 20th century revealing the abyss of His unfathomable mercy; she was Saint Faustina Kowalska who wrote in her Diary, now world famous, these words of Jesus: “I have opened my Heart as a living source of Mercy, from it all souls draw life, all approach with deep confidence this sea of Mercy. Sinners will obtain justification and the just will be strengthened in goodness. I will fill the souls of those who put their trust in My Mercy with My divine peace at the hour of their death. My daughter, continue to spread devotion to My Mercy, in doing so you will refresh My Heart which burns with the fire of compassion for sinners. Tell my priests that hardened sinners will be softened by their words if they speak of my boundless Mercy and of the compassion which My Heart feels for them. I will give priests who proclaim and exalt My Mercy wondrous power, unction to their words and I will move all the hearts to which they speak” (Book 5, 21 January 1938).

The deepest longing of Christ's Heart is that we discover how much he loves us, the extent of his tender love for creatures who, cooled by their selfishness, look only inwards at themselves, as if they were afraid to let themselves be loved unconditionally by their Creator, who asks nothing and gives all!

How society, culture, economy, politics today need this Heart! It is really true, the more man distances himself from God-Love the more he becomes 'heartless', agitated about a thousand things because he has mislaid the principal one: to let oneself be loved by Christ and to respond to this Love with our love.

Many times during history the Supreme Pontiffs have reminded humanity that without the Lord Jesus life has no real meaning, man gropes in the dark to find himself! The Servant of God John Paul II introduced the Church into the Third Millennium with a mandate to become “Apostles of Divine Mercy”. The Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI picked up where his Predecessor left off and never tires to remind us of the necessity to rediscover the merciful Heart, this infinite Love of God, who reveals Himself in our lives if we open to Him. “Open, open wide the doors to Christ” the voice of the Holy Spirit continues to say. By means of Eucharistic adoration we are “opened” from within by His invisible working in us. The Most Holy Eucharist, celebrated and adored, as the Church teaches us, is the greatest and most effective treasure of our salvation, an infinite treasure which must be safeguarded with profound respect and deepest devotion.

Close to the Heart of the Son is the Heart of the Mother whom the Church celebrates the day after the solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Let it again be the Holy Father who illuminates us with regard to this mystery: “The heart that resembles that of Christ more than any other is without a doubt the Heart of Mary, his Immaculate Mother, and for this very reason the liturgy holds them up together for our veneration. Responding to the Virgin's invitation at Fatima, let us entrust the whole world to her Immaculate Heart, which we contemplated yesterday in a special way, so that it may experience the merciful love of God and know true peace” (Benedict XVI, Angelus 5 June 2005).

Meditation: John 19:31-37

The Sacred Heart of Jesus

Immediately blood and water flowed out. (John 19:34)

On the biological level, the heart is an organ that pumps oxygen-rich blood to all parts of the body, sustaining life and activity. On the spiritual level, Jesus’ Sacred Heart continuously pumps life into our souls, supplying us with all the grace we need to stay close to the Lord and walk in his ways.

That’s the “function” of Jesus’ heart. But there is so much more to this feast than a remembrance of what his heart does. In his 1956 encyclical, On Devotion to the Sacred Heart, Pope Pius XII wrote that the heart of Jesus is “the chief sign and symbol of that threefold love with which the divine Redeemer unceas­ingly loves his eternal Father and all mankind.” Today’s feast calls us to fix our eyes on Jesus’ passionate love—his love for God and, even more miraculously, his love for us.

So let’s take up this invitation today and gaze upon the cross, where Jesus’ heart was pierced for us (John 19:34). Look at the blood and water that flowed from his side. Reflect on all the ways he taught, loved, and healed people when he walked the earth. What would have caused him to do all of this? He could have remained in heaven, sur­rounded by the angelic praise, but he loved us too deeply. He freely chose to become like one of us, to carry our sins to the cross, so that he could put an end to our afflictions and show us a new way of life.

Even today, Jesus’ love burns just as passionately. He continues to reach out to us in our loneliness and helplessness. He befriends us when we feel we have no one on our side. He heals our wounded hearts. He cleanses us when our sins bring us shame and guilt. This is Jesus’ heart for humanity. This is Jesus’ heart for you. His heart is filled with delight when he sees you. His heart longs to bring you safely into heaven, so that you can be with him for all time. His heart beats wildly for you. So gaze upon the cross today, and let his love melt your heart.

CHRYS. The Jews who strained at a gnat and swallowed a camel after their audacious wickedness, reason scrupulously about the day: The Jews therefore because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the Sabbath.

BEDE. Parasceue, i. e. preparation: the sixth day was so called because the children of Israel prepared twice the number of loaves on that day. For that Sabbath day was an high day, i. e. on account of the feast of the passover.

Besought Pilate that their legs might be broken.

AUG. Not in order to take away the legs, but to cause death, that they might be taken down from the cross, and the feast day not be defiled by the sight of such horrid torments.

THEOPHYL. For it was commanded in the Law that the sun should not set on the punishment of anyone; or they were unwilling to appear tormentors and homicides on a feast day.

CHRYS. How forcible is truth: their own devices it is that accomplish the fulfillment of prophecy: Then came the soldiers and broke the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with Him.

But when they came to Jesus, an saw that He was dead already, they broke not His legs:

but one of the soldiers with a spear pierced His side.

THEOPHYL. To please the Jews, they pierce Christ, thus insulting even His lifeless body. But the insult issues in a miracle: for a miracle it is that blood should flow from a dead body.

AUG. The Evangelist has expressed himself cautiously; not struck, or wounded, but opened His side: whereby was opened the gate of life, from whence the sacraments of the Church flowed, without which we cannot enter into that life which is the true life: And forthwith came thereout blood and water. That blood was shed for the remission of sins, that water tempers the cup of salvation. This it was which was prefigured when Noah was commanded to make a door in the side of the ark, by which the animals that were not to perish by the deluge entered; which animals prefigured the Church. To shadow forth this, the woman was made out of the side of the sleeping man; for this second Adam bowed His head, and slept on the cross, that out of that which came therefrom, there might be formed a wife for Him. O death, by which the dead are quickened, what can be purer than that blood, what more salutary than that wound!

CHRYS. This being the source whence the holy mysteries are derived, when you approach the awful cup, approach it as if you were about to drink out of Christ's side.

THEOPHYL. Shame then upon them who mix not water with the wine in the holy mysteries: they seem as if they believed not that the water flowed from the side. Had blood flowed only, a man might have said that there was some life left in the body, and that that was as why the blood flowed. But the water flowing is an irresistible miracle, and therefore the Evangelist adds, And he that saw it bare record.

CHRYS. As if to say, I did not hear it from others, but saw it with mine own eyes. And his record is true, he adds, not as if he had mentioned something so wonderful that his account would be suspected, but to stop the mouths of heretics, and in contemplation of the deep value of those mysteries which he announces.

And he knows that he says true, the you might believe.

AUG. He that saw it knows; let him that saw not believe his testimony. He gives testimonies from the Scriptures to each of these two things he relates. After, they brake not His legs, He adds, For these things were done, that the Scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of Him shall not be broken, a commandment which applied to the sacrifice of the paschal lamb under the old law, which sacrifice foreshadowed our Lord's. Also after, One of the soldiers with a spear opened His side, then follows another Scripture testimony; And again another Scripture said, They shall look on Him whom they pierced, a prophecy which implies that Christ will come in the very flesh in which He was crucified.

THE WAY 

AMID THE DANGER AND PROBLEMS OF THIS LIFE we are never without a guide. The light of the world lights up life’s way for us, and Christ bids us to follow Him. If we forsake His guidance, we lose and bewilder ourselves. 

Christ is the way: without Him there is no going to true life and happiness. Christ is the Truth: without Him there is no knowing true live, love happiness. Christ is the Life: without Him there is no genuine living. 

Without Christ life is death, a living hell. 

Christ is the right way to everlasting life. Walk the King’s Highway  with Christ. 

Be followers of Christ as He was the follower of His heavenly Father’s will.… 

Then each day will be Christmas day for you, for each day, with the angels in heaven, you shall give glory to God in the highest heaven and experience that peace which God grants to men of good will.

APOSTLES OF THE SACRED HEART 

WE CHRISTIANS, destined to be apostles wherever we are of the love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, should ever hear the insistent message that our Master gave to us through a saintly soul of yesterday: 

“My divine Heart is so wrought with love for men and especially for you, that it can no longer contain the flame of the fire of its love but must spread this flame through you and manifest itself to men to enrich them with its contain the sanctifying and saving graces needed to draw men back from the pit of perdition. 

“And for the accomplishment of this great design, I have chosen you as an abyss of unworthiness and ignorance, in order that all should be wrought by Me.”

A HEART THAT OVERFLOWS WITH THE LOVE OF GOD

(A biblical reflection on Solemnity of THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS – Friday, June 15, 2012) 

Gospel Reading: John 19:31-37 

First Reading: Hos 11:1,3-4,8-9; Psalms: Is 11:2-6, Second Reading: Eph 3:8-12,14-19

The Scripture Text

Since it was the day of Preparation, in order to prevent the bodies from remaining on the cross on the Sabbath (for the Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with Him; but when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water. He who saw it has borne witness – his testimony is true, and he knows that he tells the truth – that you also may believe. For these things took place that the scripture might be fulfilled, “Not a bone of Him shall be broken.” And again another scripture says, “They shall look on Him whom they have pierced.” (Jn 19:31-37 RSV) 

“One of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water” (Jn 19:34).

What can we say about the Sacred Heart of Jesus? It’s a heart that overflows with the love of God. From this heart, which was pierced at Calvary, flows a torrent of grace – a crucified, merciful, burning, passionate love flowing out for you.

The love within Jesus’ heart is a crucified love because it gives everything and does not let even the deepest pain hold it back from loving. It’s a love that chooses willingly and joyfully to suffer for those whom Jesus loves. This is why most images show the Sacred Heart surmounted by a cross and surrounded by thorns. No pain, no suffering, was too much for Jesus to bear – because He wanted you to live with Him.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus overflows with a merciful love. It is a never-ending fountain of mercy and forgiveness, and day after day, Jesus pleads with us to open the doors of our hearts to this mercy. Don’t shrug it off! Let His love envelop and embrace you, especially when you are most in need.

This is a heart that overflows with a burning love. Images usually depict flames of fire coming out of Jesus’ heart to symbolize the intensity of His love. This amazing fire of divine love changes, transforms, and purifies everyone it touches. It can ignite a fire even in you, empowering you to love Jesus in return and to go on to love others as He does. Don’t be afraid to let this burning love consume you. Let it transform you into the very image of Christ.

Finally, the Sacred Heart of Jesus overflows with a passionate love. It is not lukewarm or wishy-washy. Believe that Jesus eagerly longs for you! He wants to be with you, to embrace you in your joys and comfort you in your afflictions. Learn how to welcome this passionate love into your heart, and you will know an intensity and depth of love that you would have never before thought possible.

Short Prayer: Lord Jesus, I adore Your most Sacred Heart! By the power of Your Holy Spirit, ignite the fire of Your love in me. Make my heart like Your own – overflowing with crucified, merciful, burning, and passionate love for You and all Your creatures. Amen.

THE HEART OF CHRIST

The love of Jesus Christ for us is something that can never be fully set forth in words. For this reason alone, apart from others, it is useful to have an outward symbol of it, which will sum up and recall to our minds the love that means so much to us. The natural symbol is the human heart of Christ, what we call the Sacred Heart.

It is, of course, not a mere symbol, for it is a very important part of the human nature the Son of God assumed for our sake. It was formed of the substance of the virgin Mary, its beating kept Jesus alive for more than thirty years, it stopped when He died, was pierced after His death, and returned to life at the resurrection. It is a heart which we adore, because it is the heart of God made man.

Meaning of Heart 

The heart can have two meanings for us. In the first place, it is the heart of flesh, having an important part to play in the life of the body. This has always been, among all peoples, a symbol or token of love, and even in these sophisticated times young people still carve the symbol of the heart on trees. Father Gerard Manley Hopkins, the poet, writes: “Is not all language, is not common talk, is not eloquence, is not poetry, all full of mention of the heart?”

We are quite aware, of course, that the physical heart is not the organ of love; but it is very closely connected with man’s affective life. Many a heart has failed owing to the effects of joy and sorrow. Quite naturally, then, the heart can represent many aspects of a man’s life. We speak of a big heart, a tender heart, a hard heart, a warm heart, a cold heart, and so on indefinitely. The heart has always been taken as standing for what is most true of a person. To quote Hopkins again: “Tears are sometimes forced, smiles may be put on, but the beating of the heart is the truth of nature.”

Scriptural Usage 

The Scripture, as we might expect, constantly uses the word heart in the sense just referred to. Even God is presented as saying that He loves His people with His whole heart and soul, though this is purely metaphorical. More to our purpose are the references to the heart of the Messiah, to be found, for instance, in the Messianic psalms; “My heart exults” (Ps 16:9), “My heart is like wax” through suffering (Ps 22:14). “Insults have broken my heart; I had hoped for sympathy, but in vain” (Ps 69:20).

St. Paul makes frequent us of heart in a variety of ways that seem so natural to us that they might pass unnoticed. There are some fifty examples in his writings and in his words as reported in the Acts. “We have opened our heart wide to you all,” he writes to the Corinthians (2Cor 6:11); to the Philippians he says: “I hold you in my heart” (Phil 1:7). From the Thessalonians he was separated, he once wrote, “in person, but not in heart” (1Thess 2:17). He complained that his friends were breaking his heart by their manifestations of grief when he insisted upon going to face persecution in Jerusalem (Acts 21:13). Most of the texts belong to the realm of metaphor, but in some cases Paul seems to go further. For instance, he speaks of God’s love being poured into our hearts (Rom 5:5), of Christ as finding a dwelling-place in our hearts (Gal 4:6). There is question here of a real presence. When our Lord said: “If anyone loves Me he will keep My word, and My Father will love him, and we shall come to him and make our home with him”, He was not talking of a metaphorical presence. Writing to the Corinthians, St. Paul distinguishes between a letter written on tablets of stone and one written on tablets that are hearts of flesh (2Cor 3:3).

Our Lord’s Use 

Our Lord often speaks of the heart. The word is put on His lips thirty-nine times in the Gospels. In one case it does not refer to man (“the heart of the earth”), but in the other cases it is used just as we use it. Christ speaks of the dispositions of the heart – hardness, dullness, goodness, sincerity; He represents men as sinning in their hearts, and sin as coming from the heart; He attributes joy and sorrow to the heart; He reminds His hearers that God can read their hearts; and of course He refers to the love of the heart. In a well-known text He speaks of Himself as being gentle and humble of heart.

So, when the Vatican Council says of Christ: “He worked with human hands, He thought with a human man, He acted with a human will, and loved with a human heart,” it is expressing a truth t hat all can understand and appreciate (The Church Today, 22).

In English Translations 

It is not, therefore, to be thought that when we speak of the heart of Jesus Christ we are using a strange or artificial mode of speech. It is used by those who are not concerned with devotion to the Sacred Heart. Translators of the New Testament who are not Catholics will use the expression where Catholic translators do not. For instance, in St. Paul’s letter to the Phillipians (1:8) Today’s English Version translates: “My deep feeling for you comes from the heart of Christ Jesus Himself”, where the Jerusalem Bible has, “loving you as Christ Jesus loves you”. In John 7:38, where the Jerusalem Bible translates, “from His (i.e. Christ’s) breast shall flow fountains of living water”, the Revised Standard Version gives, “out of His heart”, and two other versions (which refer the words to the believer) have, “from His heart” (TEV) and “from his inmost heart” (Phillips). The New English Bible agrees with the Jerusalem Bible in translating John 1:18: “God’s only Son, who is nearest to the Father’s heart”, though strict literalness does not demand this form of words.

The Wounded Heart of Christ 

We know that our Lord’s heart was pierced after He had died on the cross. Why did He wish this further wounding to take place, when He could no longer suffer for us? There must have been some purpose in allowing this action, to which St. John draws special attention, recalling the words of the prophet, “They shall look on the one whom they have pierced”. We know, too, that our Lord retained this wound in His glorified body and invited Thomas to put His hand into His side.

This wound has always been considered by Christian writers to have great significance, and the tradition appears in the documents of the Vatican Council:

“It was from the side of Christ sleeping on the cross that the whole Church – that wonderful sacrament – had its origin” (Liturgy, 5).

“The beginning and growth of the Church are symbolized by the blood and water that came forth from the open side of Christ” (The Church, 3).

Surely, then, it is not unreasonable to find in the pierced heart of Christ a symbol of the love which He has poured out on us. It is this love which is the chief object of our devotion; the symbol is of secondary importance, and it may be admitted that different characters can find different  values in it. But enough has been said to justify the place it holds in the devotion.

Wider Meaning 

Besides the meaning we have been discussing, the heart as a single organ, with all the symbolism that goes with it, heart can have another and wider meaning. By a common figure of speech it can stand for the man himself. When we say, “All hands on deck”, we do not mean hands but men. When we say. “There was not a soul in sight”, we do not really mean that souls are visible: we are talking of persons. We may speak of a busybody, or of a nobody, but the idea of a body does not enter our minds at all. So it can be with heart. When Shakespeare wrote: “A merry heart goes all the day, Your sad tires in a mile-a (A Winter’s Tale) no one things of a heart trudging along, but of a sad or cheerful person. It is not surprising, then that when we speak of the Sacred Heart we often mean our Lord Himself, with all the qualities which distinguish Him.
