Novena for Religious Freedom

Dear Friend of Religious Freedom,

As a member of the Catholic Leadership Coalition, I send you this letter and ask you join us in the Novena Prayer for Religious Freedom during the Fortnight of Freedom planned by our bishops and promoted by our Steering Committee. Please pray with us!

As you know, there is no such thing as praying too much.  Scripture tells us to "pray constantly", (1st Thessalonians 5:17), therefore, on behalf of the Steering Committee for the Catholic Leadership Coalition,  I am asking that you join us in praying a Novena for our religious freedom  beginning June 21 and ending on July 4th, Independence Day. These dates were chosen because the Catholic bishops are organizing an event called A Fortnight of Freedom, from June 21 to July 4. The beginning date appropriately marks the feasts of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More, both of whom were executed by King Henry VIII for not acknowledging him as the spiritual head of the Church of England when England broke from the Catholic Church.

The Novena prayers are highlighted further down on this page.  Please take a minute to read the following article that so aptly describes the situation we find ourselves in at this time history and why it is so important for us to come together as brothers and sisters in Christ to storm heaven for God's help in fighting for our religious freedom.

To be said after each of the nine days reflections:

We praise and bless you for the gift of religious liberty,
the foundation of human rights, justice, and the common good.
Grant to our leaders the wisdom to protect and promote our liberties;
By your grace may we have the courage to defend them, for ourselves and for all those who live in this blessed land.
We ask this through the intercession of Mary Immaculate, our patroness, and in the name of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, with whom you live and reign, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Day 1

To Overcome Contradiction in Laws Concerning Life.  Dear Jesus, inspire the hearts of legislators to bring fairness into every law. In so doing, inspire lawmakers to remove contradiction from laws concerning life in the womb, so that no one is forced to support contraception or abortion against his free will. Do not allow religious freedom to be trampled under the feet of those who favor death in the womb. Amen.

Dear Jesus, allow the Truth of Holy Love to flood the heart of this nation. Place Truth in the center of every heart. Return this nation to its rightful place under the Dominion of God. Amen.

Typing this from a hard copy since I could not find it on the web.

Day One
Opening Prayer:
Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and enkindle in us the fire of your love.
Today's Reflection:
From well before Cardinal Gibbons [in the late 1800s], Catholics in America have been advocates for religious liberty, and the landmark teaching of the Second Vatican Council on religious liberty was influentced by the American experience...  We have been staunch defenders of religious liberty in the past.  We have a solem duty to discharge that duty today...  [We] address an urgent summons to our fellow Catholics and fellow Americans to be on guard, for religious liberty is under attack both at home and aborad.
--From Our First, Most Cherished Liberty.  U. S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, 2012

How about a Novena for Constitutional government? Why narrow it to just religious freedom?

Since this was started by Catholics I believe they are looking at the big picutre of big employers such as hospitals, diocese, etc. who would have to pay for abortions and other things against their conscience and against their Catholic beliefs.

Actually I think we could say Christian beliefs, I have yet to see a real Christian who believes in paying for abortions.

Think of the hopsitals, charities, etc. closing or ceasing to cover healthcare due to this mandate and in addition being fined huge amounts.

Lord, have mercy on us!

We praise and bless you for the gift of religious liberty, the foundation of human rights, justice, and the common good.

Well, that depends on what the term "religious liberty" means. The US Catholic bishops' opposition to the HHS mandate could get out of hand in spreading a condemned heresy amongst Catholics. The Catholic Church does not believe in the liberal value of "religious liberty" in the American Constitutional law sense of the term. The Church has taught (apparently infallibly) that religious freedom is only a right for the true religion. (The word "right" in Latin also implies something owed to a person out of justice.) The Church has taught that error does not have "rights", and it would be blasphemous to say that God has given sin or a false religion the "right" to exist. Traditionally the Church has taught that it is morally permissible to tolerate other false religions for the sake of the greater good and for preserving the peace, but this does not mean that people have a divinely constituted "right" to propagate error.

However, the Church has also taught that all individuals have a right not to be coerced into the Catholic Church, but this does not give them a right to publicly proclaim false religions. This teaching of the Church can be seen in the Encyclical Quanta Cura whose authority appears to be infallible under the Universal and Ordinary Magisterium since the pope binds all Catholics by his Apostolic Authority to hold the condemned propositions as condemned. An excerpt of the encyclical reads:

For you well know, venerable brethren, that at this time men are found not a few who, applying to civil society the impious and absurd principle of "naturalism," as they call it, dare to teach that "the best constitution of public society and (also) civil progress altogether require that human society be conducted and governed without regard being had to religion any more than if it did not exist; or, at least, without any distinction being made between the true religion and false ones." And, against the doctrine of Scripture, of the Church, and of the Holy Fathers, they do not hesitate to assert that "that is the best condition of civil society, in which no duty is recognized, as attached to the civil power, of restraining by enacted penalties, offenders against the Catholic religion, except so far as public peace may require." From which totally false idea of social government they do not fear to foster that erroneous opinion, most fatal in its effects on the Catholic Church and the salvation of souls, called by Our Predecessor, Gregory XVI, an "insanity," viz., that "liberty of conscience and worship is each man's personal right, which ought to be legally proclaimed and asserted in every rightly constituted society; and that a right resides in the citizens to an absolute liberty, which should be restrained by no authority whether ecclesiastical or civil, whereby they may be able openly and publicly to manifest and declare any of their ideas whatever, either by word of mouth, by the press, or in any other way." But, while they rashly affirm this, they do not think and consider that they are preaching "liberty of perdition;" and that "if human arguments are always allowed free room for discussion, there will never be wanting men who will dare to resist truth, and to trust in the flowing speech of human wisdom; whereas we know, from the very teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ, how carefully Christian faith and wisdom should avoid this most injurious babbling.".....

Amidst, therefore, such great perversity of depraved opinions, we, well remembering our Apostolic Office, and very greatly solicitous for our most holy Religion, for sound doctrine and the salvation of souls which is intrusted to us by God, and (solicitous also) for the welfare of human society itself, have thought it right again to raise up our Apostolic voice. Therefore, by our Apostolic authority, we reprobate, proscribe, and condemn all the singular and evil opinions and doctrines severally mentioned in this letter, and will and command that they be thoroughly held by all children of the Catholic Church as reprobated, proscribed and condemned.

Excerpt of the Encyclical Quanta Cura

What's needed for this nation, for ALL Christians, is massive spiritual revival. That Obama was voted into office ( a man who voted THREE times to deny medical care to infants surviving abortion) reflects failure in the part of the Christian ministry to lead its flock, and failure over several generations to properly educate their children.

My post was mostly a reflection of my frustration with some of those in positions of power in the Catholic Church. ( I am **equally** frustrated with many Protestant leaders as well.) There are the liberal/Marxist bishops, Notre Dame who invites Obama on campus for a commencement speech, Georgetown that covers its cross for Obama, and the liberal orders of nuns and priests.

Well,....Having a Novena, now, after supporting Marxism for all these years is like some cult that prays that they can play with snakes and not get bitten. If many in the leadership of the Catholic and many Protestant churches play with snakes they shouldn't be surprised that they get bitten. And....They should not be surprised if God is slow to hear our prayers.

My daughter taught in a Catholic K-8 school in Texas during 2008/2009. ALL of the teachers and principal at this school voted for Obama. My daughter was the only exception. When Obama was inaugurated, my daughter's class was the **only** class that did not to watch it on TV.

Not only are the children in this Catholic school being miseducated but it is evident that the teachers, principal, and higher leadership of this Catholic school are not being properly ministered. Honestly, if there were righteous leadership the bishop would ordered it immediately closed.

And....outrages are an equal opportunity offender. Our godless government schools are **filled** to the brim with innocent and tender Christian children ( Catholic and Protestant). The chances of them being active in the faith of their fathers 2 years after graduating is less than 15%.

By the way, these are the percentages of weekly mass going Catholics who voted for Obama. Its enough to make a person cry.

http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/churchgoing_catholics_chose_mccain_over_obama/

“Washington D.C., Nov 7, 2008 / 03:14 am (CNA).- Exit polls are reporting that more weekly churchgoing Catholics voted for John McCain than for President-elect Barack Obama, slightly favoring McCain by 50 percent to 49 percent.”

“Those who attend Mass on a weekly basis comprised 46 percent of the overall Catholic vote, while 54 percent of Catholics surveyed said they attend less than weekly. Among infrequent Mass goers, Obama was favored 58 to 40 percent.”
