It seems to me that in Russia and all the countries that were part of the Byzantine Empire there is a belief that it's natural for the Church and State to be intertwined. I don't think that's a good idea.

An awful lot of, if not most of, what people throw mud on the Catholic Church over actually happened when secular authorities were the ones who appointed Bishops without Rome having even so much as veto power and definately had no way to stop the princes and nobles from doing whatever they pleased.

The State will have a ruling ideology. It may be explicit or implicit, but it will happen.
