Has the struggle for occupied Jerusalem finally revealed its religious character? The recent claim by Israel's Attorney General, Yehuda Weinstein, that Al-Asqa Mosque is part of Israeli territory has drawn unprecedented condemnation from across the Islamic world. His assertion that Islam's third holiest mosque should be subject to Israeli law, including antiquities laws and laws regarding building and planning was seen as an obscene provocation. This twist marks a dangerous escalation by the Netanyahu government in an atmosphere already charged with rage and tension.
That “third holiest mosque” is Judaism’s number 1 holiest site, and yet the Israelis let the Muslims govern it. And how do they govern it? Badly.
When I went there, I was told not to take any religious symbols, unless they were Islamic. One member of our tour group had to leave his prayer shawl with security, and was not able to retrieve it. We were told that if we said the wrong thing we could start a deadly riot. We could not pray, unless it was an Islamic prayer. A woman had been evicted for silently saying a Christian prayer.
In violation of Israeli law regarding historic sites, the Muslims began excavating under the Temple Mount to build another mosque. They went through 2,000 years of archeological artifacts, and when they got caught, they lied about what they were doing. They said they were building an emergency exit, and then they crushed the artifacts to smithereens and dumped them in a valley, which is part of their policy of denying, and destroying any evidence of a Jewish presence in Israel prior to the Muslim conquest.
The Isrealis obviously understand that Obama is unlikely to win reelection, and that he has to be careful about baring his anti-Israel views right now because he can’t afford to lose any more of his base. So they are starting to act boldly against the Muslims who have made things difficult for non-Muslims visiting the Temple Mount.
What is awaiting Iran, I wonder, now that the gloves are off?
When off the teleprompter, he slips up in revealing the truth about himself, his thoughts, his beliefs. In essence, we hear the real Obama.
