A Joliet-area priest reinstated last week after being removed from ministry over an allegation of sexual abuse has been withdrawn once again, Joliet Bishop R. Daniel Conlon confirmed today.

Last week, parishioners learned that the Rev. F. Lee Ryan could minister to homebound parishioners of St. Edmund Catholic Church in Watseka, south of Kankakee, and St. Joseph Mission in Crescent City. He had been removed from ministry in May 2010 because of an alleged relationship with a teenager in the 1970s.

Money quote: "But Conlon, who also serves as chairman of the Committee for the Protection of Children and Young People for U.S. Catholic bishops, returned him to limited ministry last week because the allegation did not meet the criteria of a crime under church law at that time."

The hypocrisy and denial is suffocating.

He is our former bishop. I can’t stand the man. He shut down churches and then asked for $9 million for a new cathedral.

What is the difference between a church and a cathedral?

A cathedral is the seat (or headquarters) of a bishop.

A church is not.

The cathedral is the super-big, super-fancy church that the bishop gets to play in on special occasions. All of our other churches are just his regular, everyday churches. We had 11 catholic churches in our town and he shut down five. Granted the population drop over the past several decades justified the closings, but he really rubbed people the wrong way when he told us God wanted a $9 million cathedral.

Hmmm, he was ALLEGED to have done abuse 30+ years ago, without being arrested...or anything tried in court or proven—and that’s enough to have him removed for all that time?

I’m not following this...

Is it used as a regular church almost all the time, and is only different because it can be used for huge events if needed?

If that is correct, what kind of special events, and what do they do before there is a cathedral?

It would be used all the time plus for special events. The problem is that we already have a cathedral and it’s paid off. It is not however, new and fancy like he wanted.

Wow, no wonder you are annoyed.
