Catholic Church opens its doors to Jewish neighbors in need for Rosh Hashanah
Patheos ^ | 18 Sep 2012 | Greg Kendra

A ruptured pipe threatened to dampen Rosh Hashanah services on Long Island, but instead it brought neighbors of two faiths closer together.

Synagogue leaders arrived at the Jewish Center of Island Park on Sunday to find the ground floor completely flooded.

“The nipple of the pipe had burst, completely flooding about two-thirds of the way back through the building,” said Steve Gappelberg, a member of the center. “It was unusable.”

..Organizers turned to their neighbors at the Sacred Heart Church a block away to help them start off the new year right.

“We spent the entire day moving 250 chairs, bringing over our torah scrolls, portable arc, and we turned this auditorium into a synagogue,” Jewish Center of Island Park co-president Steve Diamond told CBS 2′s Weijia Jiang.

Firefighters and volunteers quickly pitched in and scrambled to get the Parish Hall in shape for the Rosh Hashanah services.

“We do work very closely together and there’s a wonderful respect,” Father John Tutone said. “This is just reflective of what always is here in our community.” All involved agreed that this meeting of two faiths showed how people can work together and respect each other even if they have different beliefs.

“New year, new start, new beginning and we’re all here to be together,” Rabbi Mark Getman added.

“It means the world. Without it we were nothing, nowhere to turn,” Jewish Center of Island Park secretary and treasurer Steve Michelson said.

any Orthodox Jewish synagogue worth its salt would never allow any part of its facilities to be turned into a makeshift Catholic parish,

Even if that is the case, and I'm not sure it is, it was a good Christian deed to offer the hall for their services.

they gave an auditorium to our Jewish friends, not the Church. Our Jewish friends may not wish to worship in a Church, but an auditorium is pretty neutral

So if this was a good deed, then I assume you would have to consider it a good deed for frum schuls to welcome Catholic worship as befits the needs of the Catholic faithful, replete with an altar to offer the Holy Sacrifice, statues, icons, Blessed Sacrement etc.

Yes?

...all true believers in both religions hate him back just as much.

WADR, a real Christian does not hate him, though he may hate the policies that are harming our nation. A true Christian will pray for his enlightenment, and that God will turn his heart.

Yes, it is good and commendable to offer material and moral support to those in need, including non-Christians. But you do not bring in non-Christian worship of any kind into a Catholic parish.

Remember, Jesus was an observant Jew. I don't think He would take offense. "Do unto others..."

I respectfully disagree, I wake up everyday and think I cannot possibly hate him or the Democrats more, then I realize I can and I do.

These people look up to the monsters that orchestrated the Holodomor and if given the chance would do that to all of us.

So they get no pity or respect from me, only contempt and a burning desire to see them defeated.

Yes?

I said it was a good deed if they davnened in a hall with no acoutrements of idolatrous worship. I don't know why any Orthodox Jew would be willing to worship in a place full of idols. The hall isn't part of the church, is it?

The answer to your question is very simple. The chrstian bible contains the Hebrew Bible, so chrstianity acknowledges the licitness of Jewish worship. On the other hand, the Jewish Bible doesn't contain the chrstian "new testament" at all, so you can't expect Judaism to acknowledge chrstianity the way chrstianity acknowledges Judaism, can you?

Put even more simply (and starkly), since Judaism is the true religion and all other religions are false, then davnening in a parish hall and an idolatrous "sacrifice" offered on Jewish property are not at all comparable.

Since you're a newbie, I'll give you a little information: I'm not Jewish. I'm your typical Southern Bible-thumping redneck who eventually followed his beliefs to their ultimate conclusion in Noachidism.

However, I must admit that I much prefer traditionalist Catholics to the neo-conservative papolators who treat the 1994 Catechism the way Fundamentalist Protestants treat the King James Bible. Unfortunately, it is the latter type of Catholic who predominates on Free Republic (and if you're a true traditionalist who subscribes to all the ancient beliefs unchanged then it is they rather than I whom you need to worry about; they've run at least one Catholic traditionalist off this forum, calling him a Protestant and an anti-Catholic bigot). The only thing that I don't understand about traditionalist Catholicism is its hostility to Jews and Judaism, as if Judaism were merely another false religion like islam. How in the world do you label your own claimed proto-religion as false and offensive to G-d? 'Ekh!

JimRed,

Jesus having been an observant Jew is irrelevant. What He as the Risen Christ and Lord would have us do as adopted sons of Eternity is what matters. And what His One Church has classically said and taught down through the ages is unmistakable.

We are to evangelize all and bring all to Christ. While we are to accept and tolerate people who will not come to Christ and choose to go about their own ways, we are not to aid or abet their waywardness and errors in any way. Catholic property should never play host to anything that is not Catholic, and we should not tacitly confirm others in their errors and lapses.

KC_Lion: JimRed is correct regarding hate. No matter how horrifically evil somebody is, we are not to hate, or wish them ill, other than to impede them committing sin, and we should pray for their well-being, conversion, and reform.

And however much one disagrees with Obama, no, he is no Joseph Stalin.

Zionist Conspirator,

My apologies, yes, I did assume you were Jewish, and I should not be making assumptions.

I am a full traditionalist Catholic. I’m not too worried about any Second Vaticanists. I’m pretty confident I can hold my own.

With regard to the merits of the discourse between us, we naturally have a key fundamental difference as to which religion is the true one. I believe it is Catholicism. That excludes all other claims, including all forms of Judaism. The fact that ancient Hebrews were God’s elect until 33 AD is all but irrelevant to what we’re discussing. Only Catholicism now represents true Godly worship. Judaism does not. All sorts of things are in the Christian OT, but that does not mean that they have ongoing authority at this point of human history. Classically, they are all considered fulfilled and inoperative.

No offense intended to you or anybody else, and I hope I don’t tread against any FR guidelines, but I will leave you with a couple of quotes.

“And first of all, by the death of our Redeemer, the New Testament took the place of the Old Law which had been abolished; then the Law of Christ together with its mysteries, enactments, institutions, and sacred rites was ratified for the whole world in the blood of Jesus Christ. For, while our Divine Savior was preaching in a restricted area - He was not sent but to the sheep that were lost of the House of Israel - the Law and the Gospel were together in force; but on the gibbet of His death Jesus made void the Law with its decrees fastened the handwriting of the Old Testament to the Cross, establishing the New Testament in His blood shed for the whole human race. ‘To such an extent, then,’ says St. Leo the Great, speaking of the Cross of our Lord, ‘was there effected a transfer from the Law to the Gospel, from the Synagogue to the Church, from the many sacrifices to one Victim, that, as Our Lord expired, that mystical veil which shut off the innermost part of the temple and its sacred secret was rent violently from top to bottom.’ On the Cross then the Old Law died, soon to be buried and to be a bearer of death, in order to give way to the New Testament of which Christ had chosen the Apostles as qualified ministers..”
—Pope Pius XII

“Islam accepts Jesus as a prophet and has great respect for Mary, and this certainly places Islam nearer to our religion than, for instance, Judiasm, which is far more distant from us. Islam was born in the 7th century and it has benefited to some degree from the Christian teachings of those days. Judaism, on the other hand, is the heir to the system that crucified our Lord and the members of this religion, who have not converted to Christ, are those who are radically opposed to our Lord Jesus Christ. For them, there is no question whatever in recognizing our Lord. They are in opposition to the very foundation and existence of the Catholic Church on this subject.”
—Archbishop Marcel Lefebrve

If he babbles about “idol worship” after being on the forum this long, he clearly cares little for discourse anyway. At this point it’s just another place to pass along whatever stereotypes some preacher boy fed him.

Ubama may not be Joesph Stalin.

But Van Jones is.

Cass Sunstine is.

Bill Ayers is.

They planned to have 25 Million Americans killed during the Vietnam War.

Therefore I don't pray for their souls, they have already made their choice, now they must live in it.

May G-d Damn their eternal souls.

>> A parish is to stand for Christ and his Holy Catholic Church, period. It is never to be utilized as a setting for anything contrary to Catholicism. <<

It was the auditorium, not the main.
Jesus is in our parishes, Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity, wouldn’t He welcome Jews?
