[9] After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no man could number,
from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the
throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their
hands, [10] and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who
sits upon the throne, and to the Lamb!” [11] And all the angels stood round the
throne and round the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their fa-
ces before the throne and worshipped God, [12] saying, “Amen! Blessing and glo-
ry and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God
for ever and ever! Amen.”

Commentary:

9-17. Bl. John Paul II commented on this passage as follows: “The people
dressed in white robes whom John sees with his prophetic eye are the redeemed,
and they form a ‘great multitude’, which no one could count and which is made up
of people of the most varied backgrounds. The blood of the Lamb, who has been
offered in sacrifice for all, has exercised its universal and most effective redemp-
tive power in every corner of the earth, extending grace and salvation to that ‘great
multitude’. After undergoing the trials and being purified in the blood of Christ, they
—the redeemed—are now safe in the Kingdom of God, whom they praise and bless
for ever and ever” (”Homily”, 1 November 1981). This great crowd includes all the
saved and not just the martyrs, for it says that they washed their robes in the
blood of the Lamb, not in their own blood.

Everyone has to become associated with Christ’s passion through suffering, as
St Augustine explains, not without a certain humor: “Many are martyrs in their
beds. The Christian is lying on his couch, tormented by pain. He prays and his
prayers are not heard, or perhaps they are heard but he is being put to the test
...so that he may be received as a son. He becomes a martyr through illness
and is crowned by him who hung upon the Cross” (”Sermon” 286, 8).

“It is consoling and encouraging to know that those who attain heaven constitute
a huge multitude. The passages of Matthew 7:14 and Luke 13:24 which seem to
imply that very few will be saved should be interpreted in the light of this vision,
which shows that the infinite value of Christ’s blood makes God’s will be done:
“(God) desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth”
(1 Tim 2:4).

In vv 14-17 we see the blessed in two different situations—first, before the resur-
rection of the body (v. 14) and, then, after it, when body and soul have been re-
united (vv. 15-17). In this second situation the nature of risen bodies is highligh-
ted: they cannot suffer pain or inconvenience of any kind: they are out of harm’s
reach; they have the gift of “impassibility” (cf. “St Pius V Catechism”, I, 12, 13).

This consoling scene is included in the vision to encourage believers to imitate
those Christians who were like us and now find themselves in heaven because
they have come through victorious. The Church invites us to pray along similar
lines: “Father, you sanctified the Church of Rome with the blood of its first mar-
tyrs. May we find strength from their courage and rejoice in their triumph” (”Ro-
man Missal”, Feast of the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome, opening prayer).

The Trials He Has Experienced


[7] But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent
power belongs to God and not to us. [8] We are afflicted in every way, but not
crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; [9] persecuted, but not forsaken;
struck down, but not destroyed; [10] always carrying in the body the death of
Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. [11] For
while we live we are always being given up to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the
life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. [12] So death is at work in
us, but life in you.

He Is Sustained By Hope in Heaven


[13] Since we have the same spirit of faith as he had who wrote, “I believed, and
so I spoke,” we too believe, and so we speak, [14] knowing that he who raised
the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his pre-
sence. [15] For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and
more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

Commentary:

7-12. In contrast to the greatness of the Gospel—the “treasure” entrusted to them
by God—St. Paul emphasizes the limitations of its ministers: they are “earthen
vessels” (v. 7). To illustrate this he describes the afflictions and persecution to
which he finds himself subjected and in which God’s grace always comes to his
aid.

In some way these sufferings of the Apostles and of all Christians reproduce in
their lives the sufferings of Christ in his passion and death. In his case his suf-
fering opened the way to his glorification after the Resurrection; similarly his ser-
vants, even in this life, are experiencing an anticipation of the life they will attain
in heaven; this helps them overcome every kind of affliction.

7. St. Paul again stresses that the effectiveness of all his apostolic activity
comes from God (cf., e.g., 1 Cor 1:26-31; 2 Cor 3:5); he it is who places his trea-
sures in poor earthenware vessels. The image the Apostle uses—which is remini-
scent of the clay which God used to make Adam (cf. Gen 2:7)—helps Christians
realize that through grace they bear in their souls a wonderful treasure, God him-
self; like earthen vessels they are very fragile and they need to be put together
again in the sacrament of Confession. As a gloss on these ideas St. Escriva
taught that Christians by bearing God in their souls are enabled to live at one and
the same time “in heaven and on earth, divinized: but knowing that we are of the
world and made of clay, with the frailty that is typical of clay — an earthenware
pot which our Lord has deigned to use in his service. And whenever it has got
broken, we have gone and riveted the bits together again, like the prodigal son:
‘I have sinned against heaven and against you...’” (quoted in Bernal, “Monsignor
Escriva de Balaguer”).

8-9. The Apostle’s words assure the Christian that he or she can always count
on God’s help: no matter what trials they have to undergo, victory can be attained
with the grace of God as happened in St. Paul’s case. “God is faithful, and he will
not let you be tempted beyond your strength, but with temptation will also provide
you the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it” (1 Cor 10:13). More-
over, St. Paul’s example reminds us that more or less severe suffering and tribu-
lation will be a normal thing in the lives of Christ’s followers; theirs will never be a
comfortable, trouble-free life. “If it is your ambition to win the esteem of men, if
your desire to be well-regarded and seek only a life of ease, you have gone astray
[...]. In the city of the saints, entrance is given and rest and eternal rule with the
King, only to those who have made their way along the rough, narrow way of tribu-
lation” (Pseudo-Macarius, “Homilies”, XII, 5).

10-11. As happened in St. Paul’s case, in their daily lives Christians must relive
the sufferings of Christ through self-denial and penance: this is part of following
Christ and imitating him. “The Christian vocation is one of sacrifice, penance, ex-
piation. We must make reparation for our sins—for the many times we turned our
face aside so as to avoid the gaze of God—and all the sins of mankind. We must
try to imitate Christ, ‘always carrying in the body the death of Christ’, his abnega-
tion, his suffering on the cross, ‘so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in
our bodies’ (2 Cor 4:10). Our way is one of immolation and, in this denial, we find
“gaudium cum pace”, both joy and peace” (St. J. Escriva, “Christ Is Passing By”,
9).

Self-denial, mortification, does not have to be something overt; it should be prac-
ticed in the ordinary circumstances of life—for example, by being punctual for ap-
pointments, carefully fulfilling one’s duties, treating everyone with as much chari-
ty as possible, accepting little setbacks in a good-humored way (cf. St. J. Escri-
va, “Friends of God”, 138).

10. “The death of Jesus”: more exactly, the “dying” of Christ: the Greek word re-
fers to the situation of someone who is dying.

12. In the Apostles, and also in other Christians, the paradox of Jesus’ life is ve-
rified: his death is the cause of life for all men. “Unless a grain of wheat falls into
the earth and dies, it remains alone, but if it dies, it bears much fruit” (Jn 12:24).
Afflictions and tribulations, physical and moral pain, daily self-denial and penance,
cause Christ’s disciple to die to himself and, if united to the sufferings of his Mas-
ter, they become a source of life for others through the communion of saints.

13-18. The Apostle explains where he gets the strength to bear all the tribulations
of life — from his hope in the resurrection and his expectation of being in heaven
with those to whom he is writing (v. 14). There is nothing selfish about this desire
for heaven: it helps us to stay true to the faith and it enables us to see all the suf-
ferings of this life as something transitory and slight (v. 17), a necessary step to
heaven and a way to obtain incomparably greater happiness. “If we wish to enjoy
the pleasures of eternity,” St. Alphonsus reminds us, “we must deprive ourselves
of the pleasures of time. ‘Whoever would save his life will lose it’ (Mt 16:25) [...].
If we wish to be saved, we must all be martyrs, either by the tyrant’s sword or
through our own mortification. Let us have this conviction — that everything we suf-
fer is nothing compared with the eternal glory that awaits us. ‘I consider the suffe-
rings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be re-
vealed to us’ (Rom 8:18). These momentary afflictions will bring us eternal happi-
ness (cf. 2 Cor 4:17)” (”Treasury of Preaching Material”, II, 9).

13. The Apostle’s faith leads him to keep on preaching, despite all the difficulties
this may involve. There is nothing else he can do: he is convinced that his faith is
what can save the world and he cannot but strive to spread it. If he acted other-
wise it would mean his faith was asleep and he did not truly love others. “When
you find that something has done you good,” St. Gregory the Great explains,
“try to bring it to the attention of others. You should, therefore, desire others to
join you on the ways of the Lord. If you are going to the forum or the baths, and
you meet someone who is not doing anything, you invite him to go along with
you. Apply this earthly custom to the spiritual sphere, and as you make your
way to God, do not do so alone” (”In Evangelia Homiliae”, 6, 6).

14. What inspires St. Paul’s apostolic activity and enables him to bear all the dif-
ficulties it involves, is his firm belief in resurrection in glory, the basis and cause
of which is Christ’s resurrection. He also has the hope of sharing this happiness
in heaven, in the presence of God, with all the faithful for whose salvation he is
working on earth.

15. After reminding the Corinthians that all the sufferings he has been speaking
about he has borne for their sake (cf. 4:5), St. Paul tells them what motivates
him most — the greater glory of God, to whom the faithful should turn in deep gra-
titude (cf. 1:11; 9:12). This should be man’s primary attitude to God — one of pro-
found adoration and thanksgiving for all his benefits, as we are daily reminded in
the Preface of the Mass.

“If life’s purpose were not to give glory to God, how contemptible, how hateful it
would be” (St. J. Escriva, “The Way”, 783).

The Need for Self-Denial


[23] And [Jesus] said to all, “If any man would come after Me, let him deny him-
self and take up his cross daily and follow Me. [24] For whoever would save his
life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for My sake, he will save it. [25] For
what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?”
[26] For whoever is ashamed of Me and of My words, of him will the Son of Man
be ashamed when He comes in His glory and the glory of the Father and of the
holy angels.

Commentary:

22. Jesus prophesied His passion and death in order to help His disciples believe
in Him. It also showed that He was freely accepting these sufferings He would un-
dergo. “Christ did not seek to be glorified: He chose to come without glory order
to undergo suffering; and you, who have been born without glory, do you wish to
be glorified? The route you must take is the one Christ took. This means recog-
nizing Him and it means imitating Him both in His ignominy and in His good re-
pute; thus you will glory in the Cross, which was His path to glory. That was
what Paul did, and therefore he gloried in saying, ‘Far be it from me to glory ex-
cept in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ’ (Galatians 6:14)” (St. Ambrose, “Ex-
positio Evangelii Sec. Lucam, in loc.”).

23. “Christ is saying this again, to us, whispering it in our ears: the cross each
day. As St. Jerome puts it: ‘Not only in time of persecution or when we have the
chance of martyrdom, but in all circumstances, in everything we do and think, in
everything we say, let us deny what we used to be and let us confess what we
now are, reborn as we have been in Christ’ (”Epistola” 121, 3) [...]. Do you see?
The DAILY cross. No day without a cross; not a single day in which we are not
to carry the cross of the Lord, in which we are not to accept His yoke” (St. J.
Escriva, “Christ Is Passing By”, 58 and 176). “There is no doubt about it: a per-
son who loves pleasure, who seeks comfort, who flies from anything that might
spell suffering, who is over-anxious, who complains, who blames and who be-
comes impatient at the least little thing which does not go his way — a person
like that is a Christian only in name; he is only a dishonor to his religion for Je-
sus Christ has said so: Anyone who wishes to come after Me, let him deny him-
self and take up his cross every day of his life, and follow Me” (St. John Mary
Vianney, “Selected Sermons”, Ash Wednesday).

The Cross should be present not only in the life of every Christian but also at the
crossroads of the world: “How beautiful are those crosses on the summits of high
mountains, and crowning great monuments, and on the pinnacles of cathedrals...!
But the Cross must also be inserted in the very heart of the world.

“Jesus wants to be raised on high, there in the noise of the factories and work-
shops, in the silence of libraries, in the loud clamor of the streets, in the stillness
of the fields, in the intimacy of the family, in crowded gatherings, in stadiums....
Wherever there is a Christian striving to lead an honorable life, he should, with his
love, set up the Cross of Christ, who attracts all things to Himself” (St. J. Escriva,
“The Way of the Cross”, XI, 3).

25. By this radical statement Jesus teaches us to do everything with a view to
eternal life: it is well worth while to devote our entire life on earth to attaining eter-
nal life. “We have been warned that it profits man nothing if he gains the whole
world and loses or forfeits himself. Far from diminishing our concern to develop
this earth, the expectance of a new earth should spur us on, for it is here that the
body of a new human family grows, foreshadowing in some way the age which
is to come. That is why, although we must be careful to distinguish earthly pro-
gress clearly from the increase of the Kingdom of Christ, such progress is of vi-
tal concern to the Kingdom of God, insofar as it can contribute to the better or-
dering of human society” (Vatican II, “Gaudium Et Spes”, 39).

26. Our Lord is well aware how weak people can be when difficult circumstances
arise in which they have to confess their faith by word or deed. To overcome this
weakness he has given us a special resource — the grace of the sacrament of
Confirmation, which strengthens the recipient to be “a good soldier of Christ Je-
sus” (2 Tim 2:3) and to be “the aroma of Christ” (2 Cor 2:15) among men, which
prevents us being led astray by an environment contrary to Christian faith and
morals: “Therefore, the one to be confirmed is anointed on the forehead, where
shame shows itself, lest he be ashamed to confess the name of Christ and es-
pecially his cross which was, indeed, according to the Apostle, a stumbling
block to the Jews and to the Gentiles foolishness (cf. 1 Cor 1:23)” (Council of
Florence, “Pro Armeniis”; cf. “Lumen gentium”, 11).

This duty to confess the faith applies not only to one’s private or family life but
also to one’s public life: “Non-sectarianism. Neutrality. Old myths that always try
to seem new. Have you ever stopped to think how absurd it is to leave one’s Ca-
tholicism aside on entering a university, a professional association, a cultural so-
ciety, or Parliament, like a man leaving his hat at the door?” (St. J. Escrivá, “The

Commentary:

30:1-14. “The words of Agur son of Jakeh of Massa” is translated in the Vulgate
as “The words of Gatherer the son of Vomiter”, a reference, seemingly, to Solo-
mon. St Bede comments: “Immediately afterwards come some words of Solo-
mon, spoken by him in a different way. Perhaps because it is called ‘Ecclesias-
tes’ in Greek, the name in Latin is ‘He who gathers together’’’ (In proverbial Salo-
monis, 30, 1). Verses 2-6 are reminiscent of the style and theme of the book of
Job (cf. Job 17:6; 24:25), and after them comes a prayer (vv. 7-9) and some
counsels (vv. 10-14). On Massa, see the note on 31:1-9.

30:8-9. “Feed me with the bread that is needful to me’’ (v. 8). To have the neces-
sary space to develop a relationship with God and cope with the ordinary affairs
of life, a person needs a basic level of subsistence. Lack of the necessaries of
life, and having too much of the good things — both situations are an obstacle to
serving God and other people (cf. v. 9). Our Lord taught us to ask in the Our Fa-
ther, “Give us this day our daily bread’’ (cf. Mt 6:11; Lk 11:3). The Roman Cate-
chism sees these words as including ‘’the idea of a frugal and temperate life, for
we should seek only what is needed to meet our natural requirements and not
demand many, rich delicacies, […] In the same way, it says ‘daily bread’, for we
eat it to recover our strength and the energy that we use up every day. […] We
should often ask to be constant in our love and adoration of God, and to he whol-
ly convinced of the truth that our life and health depends on God’’ (4, 13, 13). The
opposite would be the attitude of the rich person who draws comfort from the fact
that he has wealth, yet it prevents him from seeking God and being concerned
about his neighbour. This teaching can he seen, too, in the parable of Lazarus
and the rich man (Lk 16:19-31).

whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart. [5] And wherever
they do not receive you, when you leave that town shake off the dust from your
feet as a testimony against them.” [6] And they departed and went through the
villages, preaching the Gospel and healing everywhere.

Commentary:

1-4. This is the first mission the Apostles were sent on. Jesus wants them to
gain experience which will stand to them in the mission they will have after He
ascends into Heaven. He charges them to do what He Himself did — preach the
Kingdom of God and heal the sick. This scene is commented on at greater
length in notes on Matthew 10:7-8; 10:9-10; and Mark 6:8-9.

[Notes on Matthew 10:7-8 states:

7-8. Previously, the prophets, when speaking of the messianic times, had used
imagery suited to the people’s spiritual immaturity. Now, Jesus, in sending His
Apostles to proclaim that the promised Kingdom of God is imminent, lays stress
on its spiritual dimension. The power mentioned in verse 8 are the very sign of
the Kingdom of God or the reign of the Messiah proclaimed by the prophets. At
first (chapters 8 and 9) it is Jesus who exercises these messianic powers; now
He gives them to His disciples as proof that His mission is divine (Isaiah 35:5-6;
40:9; 52:7; 61:1).]

[Notes on Matthew 10:9-10 states:

9-10. Jesus urges His disciples to set out on their mission without delay. They
should not be worried about material or human equipment: God will make up any
shortfall. This holy audacity in setting about God’s work is to be found throughout
the history of the Church: if Christians had bided their time, waiting until they had
the necessary material resources, many, many souls would never have received
the light of Christ. Once a Christian is clear in his mind about what God wants
him to do, he should not stay at home checking to see if he has the wherewithal
to do it. “In your apostolic undertakings you are right — it’s your duty — to consi-
der what means the world can offer you (2 + 2 = 4), but don’t forget — ever! — that,
fortunately, your calculations must include another term: God + 2 + 2 ...” (St. J.
Escriva, “The Way”, 471).

However, that being said, we should not try to force God’s hand, to have Him do
something exceptional, when in fact we can meet needs by our own efforts and
work. This means that Christians should generously support those who, because
they are totally dedicated to the spiritual welfare of their brethren, have no time
left over to provide for themselves: in this connection see Jesus’ promise in Mat-
thew 10:40-42.]

[Notes on Mark 6:8-9 states:

8-9. Jesus requires them to be free of any form of attachment if they are to
preach the Gospel. A disciple, who has the mission of bringing the Kingdom of
God to souls through preaching, should not rely on human resources but on
God’s Providence. Whatever he does need in order to live with dignity as a herald
of the Gospel, he must obtain from those who benefit from his preaching, for the
laborer deserves his maintenance (cf. Matthew 10:10).

“The preacher should so trust in God that he is convinced that he will have every-
thing he needs to support life, even if he cannot himself obtain it; for he should
not neglect eternal things through worrying about temporal things” (St. Bede, “In
Marci Evangelium Expositio, in loc.”). “By these instructions the Lord did not
mean that the evangelists should not seek to live in any other way than by de-
pending on what was offered them by those to whom they preached the Gospel;
otherwise this very Apostle [St. Paul] would have acted contrary to this precept
when he earned his living by the labor of his own hands” (St. Augustine, “De
Consensu Evangelistarum”, II, 30).]

Pray a Rosary each day for our nation.

Pray the Rosary

1.  Sign of the Cross:  In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

2.  The Apostles Creed:  I BELIEVE in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

3.  The Lord's Prayer:  OUR Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

The vision of the resurrection of God’s people

The hand of the Lord came upon me, and he led me out in the spirit of the Lord and set me in the center of the plain, which was now filled with bones. He made me walk among them in every direction so that I saw how many they were on the surface of the plain. How dry they were!

He asked me: Son of man, can these bones come to life? “Lord God,” I answered, “you alone know that.” Then he said to me: Prophesy over these bones, and say to them: Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord! Thus says the Lord God to these bones: See! I will bring spirit into you, that you may come to life. I will put sinews upon you, make flesh grow over you, cover you with skin, and put spirit in you so that you may come to life and know that I am the Lord.

I prophesied as I had been told, and even as I was prophesying I heard a noise; it was a rattling as the bones came together, bone joining bone. I saw the sinews and the flesh come upon them, and the skin cover them, but there was no spirit in them. Do whatever they tell you, but do not follow what they do

Shepherds, hear the word of the Lord. But what are the shepherds to hear? Thus says the Lord God: Behold I myself am over the shepherds, and I will claim my sheep from their hands.

Hear and learn, you sheep of God. God calls for an accounting of his sheep from the wicked shepherds and inquires into the death of his sheep at their hands. For in another passage he speaks through the same prophet: Son of man, I have appointed you a watchman for the house of Israel. You shall hear the word from my mouth and you shall point out the way to them in my name. When I say to the sinner: You shall die, and you do not speak to warn the wicked man from his wicked way, because of his wickedness he shall die, but you shall be held responsible for his death. If, however, you warn the wicked man to turn away from his wickedness, and he fails to do so, he shall die in his iniquity, but you shall have saved your soul.

Dear brothers, what does this mean? Do you see how dangerous it is to keep silent? The sinner dies and rightly so; he dies in his wickedness and in his sin, for his failure to heed you has killed him. He could have found the Lord, the living shepherd who says: I live. But he was heedless; and the one appointed for this task, the watchman, did not warn him. The wicked one then justly suffers death and the watchman rightly suffers damnation. But the Lord says, if you say to the wicked man: You shall surely die, and if he fails to heed the sword of judgment with which I have threatened him, that sword will overtake and kill him, and he will die in his sin; but you will have saved your soul. Therefore it is our task not to keep silent, and it is your task, even if we ourselves are silent, to hear the words of the shepherd from the Scriptures.

I have said that he will take the sheep from the bad shepherds and give them to shepherds who are good. Let us consider whether he does so. I see him taking the sheep from the bad shepherds, when he says: Behold, I myself am over the shepherds, and I will claim my sheep from their hands; and I will turn away from them so that they may not pasture my sheep, and the shepherds shall no longer give pasture. For when I say: “Let them pasture my sheep,” they give pasture to themselves and not to my sheep. Therefore, I will turn away from them so that they may not pasture my sheep. How does the Lord turn away from them to keep them from pasturing his sheep? Do whatever they tell you, but do not follow what they do. It is as if he said: “The words they say are mine, but their deeds are their own.” If you do not follow the example of the bad shepherds, they are not giving you pasture. But if you do what they say, it is I who am feeding you.”

History:

Early Christian physicians and martyrs. They were twins, born in Arabia, and practiced the art of healing in the seaport Ægea, now Ayash (Ajass), on the Gulf of Iskanderun in Cilicia, Asia Minor, and attained a great reputation. They accepted no pay for their services and were, therefore, called anargyroi, "the silverless". In this way they brought many to the Catholic Faith. When the Diocletian persecution began, the Prefect Lysias had Cosmas and Damian arrested, and ordered them to recant. They remained constant under torture, in a miraculous manner suffered no injury from water, fire, air, nor on the cross, and were finally beheaded with the sword. Their three brothers, Anthimus, Leontius, and Euprepius died as martyrs with them. The execution took place September 27, probably in the year 287. At a later date a number of fables grew up about them, connected in part with their relics. The remains of the martyrs were buried in the city of Cyrus in Syria; the Emperor Justinian I (527-565) sumptuously restored the city in their honor. Having been cured of a dangerous illness by the intercession of Cosmas and Damian, Justinian, in gratitude for their aid, rebuilt and adorned their church at Constantinople, and it became a celebrated place of pilgrimage. At Rome Pope Felix IV (526-530) erected a church in their honor, the mosaics of which are still among the most valuable art remains of the city. The Greek Church celebrates the feast of Saints Cosmas and Damian on July 1, October 17, and November 1, and venerates three pairs of saints of the same name and profession. Cosmas and Damian are regarded as the patrons of physicians and surgeons and are sometimes represented with medical emblems. They are invoked in the Canon of the Mass and in the Litany of the Saints.

These two martyrs were twin brothers from Syria in Arabia. They were very famous students of science and both became excellent doctors.

Cosmas and Damien saw in every patient a brother or sister in Christ. For this reason, they showed great charity to all and treated their patients to the best of their ability.

No matter how much care a patient required, neither Cosmas nor Damien ever accepted any money for their services. For this reason, they were called by a name in Greek which means "the penniless ones."

Every chance they had, the two saints told their patients about Jesus Christ, the Son of God. And because the people all loved these twin doctors, they listened to them willingly.

Cosmas and Damien often brought health back to both the bodies and the souls of those who came to them for help.

When Emperor Diocletian's persecution of Christians began in their city, because they were so famous, the saints were arrested at once. They had never tried to hide their great love for their Christian faith.

They were tortured, but nothing could make them give up their belief in Christ. They had lived for him and had brought so many people to his love. So at last, they were put to death in the year 303. These holy martyrs are named in the First Eucharistic Prayer of the Mass.

As we remember these two holy doctors, the Church prays today for all health care professionals, that they would follow the example of Cosmas and Damien in their care for the physical and spiritual well being of others.

The only thing we know about Sts. Cosmas and Damian is that they suffered martyrdom in Syria during the Roman persecution of Diocletian, around 303 A.D. Tradition says they were twin brothers and medical doctors, and have been honored since the 6th century. These brothers never charged a fee for their medical services. Their names are in the Roman Canon of the Mass. This feast is highly celebrated in Italian communities.

According to the 1962 Missal of Bl. John XXIII the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, today is the feast of Sts. Cyprian and Justina. They were Christians of Antioch who suffered martyrdom during the persecution of Diocletian at Nicomedia. It is also the feast of Sts. Isaac Jogues, John de Brebeuf and Companions, Martyrs (USA). Their feast in the Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite is celebrated on October 19.


Sts. Cosmas and Damian
This is one of the most ancient feasts of the Church, and these two martyrs have been honored in the East and West in many ways, including the building of churches in their honor in Rome and Constantinople. Along with St. Luke, they are the patron saints of doctors. Little is known of their true history, but the legend that has come down to us is of very early origin.

Sts. Cosmas and Damian were venerated in the East as the "moneyless ones" because they practiced medicine gratis. According to the legend, they were twin brothers, born in Arabia, who studied in Syria and became skilled physicians. They were supposed to have lived on the Bay of Alexandretta in Cilicia, in what is now Turkey.

Since they were prominent Christians, they were among the first arrested when the great persecution under Diocletian began. Lysias, the governor of Cilicia, ordered their arrest, and they were beheaded. Their bodies, it was said, were carried to Syria and buried at Cyrrhus.

What is certain is that they were venerated very early and became patrons of medicine, known for their miracles of healing. The Emperor Justinian was cured by their intercession and paid special honor to the city of Cyrrhus where their relics were enshrined. Their basilica in Rome, adorned with lovely mosaics, was dedicated in the year 530. They are named in the Roman Martyrology and in the Canon of the Mass, testifying to the antiquity of their feast day.

The great honor in which they are held and the antiquity of their veneration indicate some historical memory among the early Christians who came out of the great persecutions with a new cult of Christian heroes. Cosmas and Damian were not only ideal Christians by their practice of medicine without fee, they also symbolized God's blessing upon the art of healing and that respect for every form of science, which is an important part of Christian tradition.

Sts. Cyprian and Justina
Cyprian and Justina, Christians of Antioch were martyred at Nicomedia, September 26, 304 during the persecution of Decius. Already in the same century, quite a colorful legend arose about them. The legend says that at the beginning of St. Cyprian's life he was anything but saintly. Much of his early training had taken place in North African Carthage, in modern Tunisia. He had been one of the leading sorcerers of the ancient world; he was a model and guide for many in the arts of darkness, and had ensnared many souls for evil. One time, as he was attempting by demonic means to seduce a young Christian virgin, Justina, on behalf of a lustful youth, Aglaidas, which backfired. St. Justina in her simplicity traced on herself the symbol of the Cross, at which the evil spirit fled. Cyprian's pride was stung. After many other unsuccessful attempts, Cyprian recognized the power of Christ and His Gospel. He not only renounced his old ways and was baptized, but soon thereafter became a deacon, then a priest, and finally a bishop.

The Word Among Us

Meditation: Luke 9:1-6

Saints Cosmas and Damian, Martyrs

“He sent them to proclaim the kingdom of God.” (Luke 9:2)

Anyone who has been present at the birth of a baby would have to admit it’s a breathtaking experience. It is truly awe inspiring to see a new life come forth, to hear a strong cry coming from one so fragile, and to see the mother weep tears of joy that miraculously wash away the pain of labor. How privileged we feel to behold it!

How much more awesome it is to witness the life of Jesus come to birth in someone as he or she turns to the Lord in conversion! How amazing that we can behold heaven touching earth in so dramatic and personal a fashion!

Do you know what’s even more amazing? We aren’t simply onlookers. We can be active participants in the process. We are essential, necessary co-workers with Jesus in his plan of salvation. In fact, Jesus has called each of us to become his hands, feet, and voice in our world today. As he did with the Twelve, he has sum­moned us, given us a share in his power, and sent us out.

Granted, we are merely jars of clay—cracked pots, as one author put it. Still, in our weakness and frailty, Jesus wants to make us into vessels of honor, carrying within our­selves his presence and his promises. He knows how weak we are, but he also knows that he has redeemed us and made us into a new creation. We are so much more than our human weaknesses or failings! The question is: “will I take hold of my heritage as a child of God?”

The apostles in today’s Gospel reading “went from village to village proclaiming the good news” (Luke 9:6). Limited novices though they were, they went out looking for peo­ple to convert. And God went with them and worked through them— despite their flaws.

Follow the apostles’ lead. Embrace your calling to bring people from death to life. It doesn’t take much more than an eager heart and a touch of courage. As you step out and try, you’ll find God filling the gaps in you—and changing you in the process!

CYRIL; It was fitting that those who were appointed the ministers of holy teaching should be able to work miracles, and by these very acts themselves be believed to be the ministers of God. Hence it is said, Then called he his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils. Herein He brings down the haughty pride of the devil, who once said, There is none who shall open his mouth against me.

EUSEB. And that through them the whole race of mankind may be sought out, He not only gives them power to drive away evil spirits, but to cure all kind of diseases at His command; as it follows, And to cure diseases.

CYRIL; Mark here the divine power of the Son, which belongs not to a fleshly nature. For it was in the power of the saints to perform miracles not by nature, but by participation of the Holy Spirit; but it was altogether out of their power to grant this authority to others. For how could created natures possess dominion over the gifts of the Spirit? But our Lord Jesus Christ, as by nature God, imparts graces of this kind to whomsoever He will, not invoking upon them a power which is not His own, but infusing it into them from Himself.

CHRYS. But after that they had been sufficiently strengthened by His guidance, and had received competent proofs of His power, He sends them out, as it follows, And he sent them to teach the kingdom of God. And here we must remark, that they are not commissioned to speak of sensible things as Moses and the Prophets; for they promised a land and earthly goods, but these a kingdom, and whatsoever is contained in it.

GREG. NAZ. Now in sending His disciples to preach, our Lord enjoined many things on them, the chief of which are, that they should be so virtuous, so constant, so temperate, and, to speak briefly, so heavenly, that no less through their manner of living than their words, the teaching of the Gospel might be spread abroad. And therefore were they sent with lack of money, and staves, and a single garment; He accordingly adds, And he said to them, Take nothing in the way, neither staves.

CHRYS. Many things indeed He ordained hereby; first indeed it rendered the disciples unsuspected; secondly, it held them aloof from all care, so that they might give their whole study to the word; thirdly, it taught them their own proper virtue. But perhaps some one will say that the other things indeed are reasonable, but for what reason did He command them to have no scrip on their way, nor two coats, nor staff? In truth, because He wished to rouse them to all diligence, taking them away from all the cares of this life, that they might be occupied by the one single care of teaching.

EUSEB. Wishing then that they should be free from the desire of wealth and the anxieties of life, He gave this injunction. He took it as a proof of their faith and courage, that when it was commanded them to lead a life of extreme poverty, they would not escape from what was ordered. For it was fitting that they should make a kind of bargain, receiving these saving virtues to recompense them for obedience to commands. And when He was making them soldiers of God, He girds them for battle against their enemies, by telling them to embrace poverty. For no soldier of God entangles himself in the affairs of a secular life.

AMBROSE; Of what kind then he ought to be who preaches the Gospel of the kingdom of God is marked out by these Gospel precepts; that is, he must not require the supports of secular aid; and clinging wholly to faith, he must believe that the less he requires those things, the more they will be supplied to him.

THEOPHYL. For He sends them out as very beggars, so that He would have them neither carry bread, nor any thing else of which men are generally in want.

AUG. Or, the Lord did not wish the disciples to possess and carry with them these things, not that they were not necessary to the support of this life, but because He sent them thus to show that these things were due to them from those believers to whom they announced the Gospel, that so they might neither possess security, nor carry about with them the necessaries of this life, either great or little. He has therefore, according to Mark, excluded all except a staff, showing that the faithful owe every thing to their ministers who require no superfluities. But this permission of the staff He has mentioned by name, when He says, They should take nothing in the way, but a staff only.

AMBROSE; To those also who wish it, this place admits of being explained, so as to seem only to represent a spiritual temper of mind, which appears to have castoff as it were a certain covering of the body; not only rejecting power and despising wealth, but renouncing also the delights of the flesh itself.

THEOPHYL. Some also understand by the Apostles not carrying scrip, nor staff, nor two coats, that they must not lay up treasures, (which a scrip implies, collecting many things,) nor be angry and of a quarrelsome spirit, (which the staff signifies,) nor be false and of a double heart, (which is meant by the two coats.)

CYRIL; But it may be said, How then shall necessary things be prepared for them. He therefore adds, And into whatsoever house you enter, there abide, and thence depart. As if He said, Let the food of disciples suffice you, who receiving from you spiritual things, will minister to you temporal. But He ordered them to abide in one house, so as neither to incommode the host, (that is, so as to send him away,) nor themselves to incur the suspicion of gluttony and wantonness.

AMBROSE; He pronounces it to be foreign to the character of a preacher of the heavenly kingdom to run from house to house and change the rights of inviolable hospitality; but as the grace of hospitality is supposed to be offered, so also if they are not received the dust must be shaken oil; and they are commanded to depart from the city; as it follows, And whosoever will not receive you when you go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony, &c.

THEOPHYL; The dust is shaken off from the Apostles' feet as a testimony of their labors, that they entered into a city, and the apostolical preaching had reached to the inhabitants thereof. Or the dust is shaken off when they receive nothing (not even of the necessaries of life) from those who despised the Gospel.

CYRIL; For it is very improbable that those who despise the saving Word, and the Master of the household, will show themselves kind to His servants, and seek further blessings.

AMBROSE; Or it is a great return of hospitality which is here taught, i.e. that we should not only wish peace to our hosts, but also if any faults of earthly infirmity obscure them, they should be removed by receiving the footsteps of apostolical preaching.

THEOPHYL; But if any by treacherous negligence, or even from zeal, despise the word of God, their communion must be shunned, the dust of the feet must be shaken off, lest by their vain deeds which are to be compared to the dust, the footstep of a chaste mind be defiled.

EUSEB. But when the Lord had girded His disciples as soldiers of God with divine virtue and wise admonitions, sending them to the Jews as teachers and physicians, they afterwards went forth, as it follows, And they departed, and went through the towns preaching the gospel, and healing every where.

Wednesday of the Twenty-Fifth Week in Ordinary Time

 

Luke 9: 1-6

Jesus summoned the Twelve and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them to proclaim the Kingdom of God and to heal the sick. He said to them, "Take nothing for the journey, neither walking stick, nor sack, nor food, nor money, and let no one take a second tunic. Whatever house you enter, stay there and leave from there. And as for those who do not welcome you, when you leave that town, shake the dust from your feet in testimony against them." Then they set out and went from village to village proclaiming the Good News and curing diseases everywhere.

Introductory Prayer: Lord, you are the author of life and the giver of all that is good. You are the Prince of Peace and my mainstay. You are my healer and the cure itself. I need you, and I need to give you. I love you and commit myself to you entirely, knowing you could never let me down or deceive me. Thank you for giving me your very self.

Petition: Lord, help me to rely on your grace and not on worldly things.

1. The Mission: Christ sends out his apostles to preach the good news with inadequate supplies. They are charged to trust in Providence. Jesus shrinks their suitcases to practically nothing. How could they touch people? Like St. Paul they were able to understand that Jesus was guiding their steps from a discreet distance: “I consider all as loss for the surpassing knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord” (Philippians 3:8).Jesus gave them restrictions to teach them that their strength in bearing fruit lies in their love for him rather than in their material possessions or management skills. Do I carry this same conviction in the home, in the office, or running the errands? Am I willing to go two miles if the local Church community presses me into service for one mile?

2. Detached from All Things: Christ warns us about hoarding possessions, not so much by what he says, but by what he does. He doesn’t send his friends out like sheep among wolves so he can retire to a comfortable sofa all weekend long. By giving them a good example first, Jesus has already demonstrated what is necessary for apostolic success. He was born in a musty cave. His first bed was an animal trough. His first apostolic success, at the age of twelve, was cut short by his parents who intimated to him that his timing was off. He sent Peter to pull coins out of a fish’s mouth because he had no money to pay the tax. He allowed simple things — a woman at a well, a funeral march in a village — to become moments remembered worldwide, for ages to come, by countless followers. Later, he would be laid in someone else’s grave. Material welfare alone cannot obtain what the Lord is sending us to accomplish!

3. A Free Choice: Jesus didn’t make the disciples go off to a survival camp. Nevertheless, the harder the conditions were, the more attraction they felt at being involved. These Galilean fishermen freely accepted an unknown trade. They had discovered a treasure that so filled them with enthusiasm they sold everything in order to get hold of it and share it. This treasure is Christ. The Gospel says, “Then they set out and went from village to village....” It didn’t take the apostles long to decide what they wanted to do, for within their vessels of clay they carried a treasure which needed to spread far and wide.

Conversation with Christ:Lord Jesus, as wonderful as material things are, they do not amount to anything compared to possessing you and teaching others about you. See the efforts I so intensely perform for your sake and bless them. Lord, help me, as you helped St. Paul, to continue fighting for a heavenly crown that doesn’t fade or rust.

Resolution: Today I will find a moment to make a visit to the Blessed Sacrament and pray earnestly for the missionary intentions of the Holy Father for this month.

Follow in Christ’s Footsteps

God’s words are timeless. His promises transcend all time and space. The Bible is full of His promises. Jesus commissioned his Apostles to go out to spread the Good News, to heal people and to take authority over demons.

This is still true today. We are called to reach out and help those who are diseased physically and spiritually. Is it not healing when we compassionately caress the hand of an arthritic man? Is it not healing when we sit down and listen to the woes and worries of a co-worker? Is it not taking authority when we help rehabilitate a friend hooked on vices?

Jesus does not promise that it will be easy. We will meet disappointments and rejections. However, those of us who are willing to follow his footpath will find a place in his kingdom.

"Give me neither poverty nor riches; [provide me only with the food I need;] lest, being full, I deny You, saying, 'Who is the Lord?' or, being in want, I steal, and profane the name of my God." —Proverbs 30:8-9
 

Jesus sent His disciples out on mission as follows: "Take nothing for the journey, neither walking staff nor traveling bag; no bread, no money" (Lk 9:3). The disciples would be provided for by their heavenly Father, Who knew all they needed before they could ask (Mt 6:32) and Who provided everything for them (Mt 6:30). Since God was their Provider, the disciples were free to concentrate on proclaiming the good news of the Gospel.

Our central battle is one of faith. Will we or won't we believe that God will provide for us? If we believe the Lord will personally provide for us, we won't need to steal food and thereby provide for ourselves. Jesus asked His disciples: " 'When I sent you on mission without purse or traveling bag or sandals, were you in need of anything?' 'Not a thing,' they replied" (Lk 22:35).

However, if we don't believe Jesus and His promise that the Father provides our needs, we will steal or do whatever it takes to satisfy our needs (Prv 30:9). One of Jesus' disciples, Judas, lost this battle of faith. Judas did steal to provide for his wants (Jn 12:6). In so doing, he profaned the name of his God (Prv 30:9) and eventually betrayed Jesus at Gethsemani (Mt 26:49).

Daily, constantly, renew your faith in God as Provider and in Jesus as Lord. "Trust in Him at all times" (Ps 62:9).

 
Prayer: Lord, "I do believe! Help my lack of trust!" (Mk 9:24)
Promise: "Jesus now called the Twelve together and gave them power and authority to overcome all demons." —Lk 9:1
Praise: Sts. Cosmas and Damian, both doctors, provided free medical care to the poor, and were hated by the governor and emperor. Despite opposition, they faithfully served God in this ministry.
