Reading 1 Eph 4:1-6

Brothers and sisters:
I, a prisoner for the Lord,
urge you to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received,
with all humility and gentleness, with patience,
bearing with one another through love,
striving to preserve the unity of the spirit
through the bond of peace;
one Body and one Spirit,
as you were also called to the one hope of your call;
one Lord, one faith, one baptism;
one God and Father of all,
who is over all and through all and in all.

you say that it is going to be hot--and so it is.
You hypocrites!
You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky;
why do you not know how to interpret the present time?

"Why do you not judge for yourselves what is right?
If you are to go with your opponent before a magistrate,
make an effort to settle the matter on the way;
otherwise your opponent will turn you over to the judge,
and the judge hand you over to the constable,
and the constable throw you into prison.
I say to you, you will not be released
until you have paid the last penny."

The prayer and confession of sin of a penitent people

Read out publicly this scroll which we send you, in the house of the Lord, on the feast day and during the days of assembly:

“Justice is with the Lord, our God; and we today are flushed with shame, we men of Judah and citizens of Jerusalem, that we, with our kings and rulers and priests and prophets, and with our fathers, have sinned in the Lord’s sight and disobeyed him. We have neither heeded the voice of the Lord, our God, nor followed the precepts which the Lord set before us.

“From the time the Lord led our fathers out of the land of Egypt until the present day, we have been disobedient to the Lord, our God, and only too ready to disregard his voice. And the evils and the curse which the Lord enjoined upon Moses, his servant, at the time he led our fathers forth from the land of Egypt to give us the land flowing with milk and honey, cling to us even today. For we did not heed the voice of the Lord, our God, in all the words of the prophets whom he sent us, but each one of us went off after the devices of our own wicked hearts, served other gods, and did evil in the sight of the Lord, our God.

“And the Lord fulfilled the warning he had uttered against us: against our judges, who governed Israel, against our kings and princes, and against the men of Israel and Judah. He brought down upon us evils so great that there has not been done anywhere under heaven what has been done in Jerusalem, as was written in the law of Moses: that one after another of us should eat the flesh of his son or of his daughter. Hear, O Lord, for you are a God of mercy; and have mercy on us, who have sinned against you: for you are enthroned forever, while we are perishing forever. Lord Almighty, God of Israel, hear the prayer of Israel’s few, the sons of those who sinned against you; they did not heed the voice of the Lord, their God, and the evils cling to us.

“Remember at this time not the misdeeds of our fathers, but your own hand and name: for you are the Lord our God; and you, O Lord, we will praise! For this, you put into our hearts the fear of you: that we may call upon your name, and praise you in our captivity, when we have removed from our hearts all the wickedness of our fathers who sinned against you. Behold us today in our captivity, where you scattered us, a reproach, a curse, and a requital for all the misdeeds of our fathers, who withdrew from the Lord, our God.”

God is rich in mercy, and because he loved us so much,

Second reading
From a letter to Proba by Saint Augustine, bishop
The Spirit pleads for us

The person who asks for and seeks this one thing from the Lord makes his petition confidently and serenely. He has no fear that, when he receives it, it may harm him, for if this is absent, anything else he duly receives brings no benefit at all. This is the one, true and only life of happiness, that, immortal and incorruptible in body and spirit, we should contemplate the Lord’s graciousness for ever. It is for the sake of this one thing that everything else is sought and without impropriety requested. The person who has this will have all that he wants; in heaven, he will be unable to want, because he will be unable to possess anything that is unfitting.

In heaven is the fountain of life, that we should now thirst for in prayer as long as we live in hope and do not yet see the object of our hope, under the protection of his wings in whose presence is all our desire, so that we may drink our fill from the plenty of his house and be given drink from the running stream of his delights, for with him is the fountain of life, and in his light we shall see light, when our desire will be satisfied with good things, and there will be nothing to ask for with sighs but only what we possess with joy.

Yet, since this is that peace that surpasses all understanding, even when we ask for it in prayer we do not know how to pray for what is right. Certainly we do not know something if we cannot think of it as it really is; whatever comes to mind we reject, repudiate, find fault with; we know that this is not what we are seeking, even if we do not yet know what kind of thing it really is.

There is then within us a kind of instructed ignorance, instructed, that is, by the Spirit of God who helps our weakness. When the Apostle said: If we hope for something we do not see, we look forward to it with patience, he added, In the same way the Spirit helps our weakness; we do not know what it is right to pray for, but the Spirit himself pleads with sighs too deep for words. He who searches hearts knows what the Spirit means, for he pleads for the saints according to God’s will.

We must not understand by this that the Holy Spirit of God pleads for the saints as if he were someone different from what God is: in the Trinity the Spirit is the unchangeable God and one God with the Father and the Son. Scripture says: He pleads for the saints because he moves the saints to plead, just as it says: The Lord your God tests you, to know if you love him, in this sense, that he does it to enable you to know. So the Spirit moves the saints to plead with sighs too deep for words by inspiring in them a desire for the great and as yet unknown reality that we look forward to with patience. How can words express what we desire when it remains unknown? If we were entirely ignorant of it we would not desire it; again, we would not desire it or seek it with sighs, if we were able to see it.

Born: (around) 45 :: Died: 107

St. Evaristus was born in Greece. His parents were Hellenic Jews of Bethlehem and he was brought up in the Jewish religion. His father was so pleased with his son's virtue and knowledge that he sent him to the best teachers.

But when Evaristus grew older he learnt to love the Christian faith and soon became a Christian. So great was his love for his new faith that he decided to become a priest.

At Rome, where he carried out his priestly duties, everyone grew to admire and love him. So when the pope was killed, Evaristus was chosen to take his place. He felt he was not worthy to become pope, but God knew better.

These were times when non-believers were attacking the Church. Such bad lies were spread about the Catholic faith that the Romans went about looking for Christians and put them to death.

Every pope was almost certain of being arrested. For about eight years, Pope St. Evaristus ruled the Church. His enthusiasm was so great that the number of believers grew larger every day. But at last, he was captured.

The jailers were amazed to see the joy on the holy old man's face as he was taken to prison. St. Evaristus thought he was very lucky to be able to suffer and die for Jesus. And he felt that dying, as a martyr for Jesus was the best gift he could be given. Pope St. Evaristus died in 107.

BEDE; Or, they who from the change of the elements can easily when they like predetermine the state of the weather, might if they wished also understand the time of our Lord's coming from the words of the Prophets.

CYRIL; For the prophets have in many ways foretold the mystery of Christ; it became them therefore, if they were wise, to stretch their prospect beyond to the future, nor will ignorance of the time to come avail them after the present life. For there will be wind and rain, and a future punishment by fire; and this is signified when it is said, A shower comes. It became them also not to be ignorant of the time of salvation, that is, the coming of the Savior, through whom perfect piety entered into the world. And this is meant when it is said, You say that there will be heat. Whence it follows in censure of them, You hypocrites, you can discern the face of the sky and the earth, but how is it that you do not discern this time.

BASIL; Now we must observe, that conjectures concerning the stars are necessary to the life of man, as long as we do not push our searches into their signs beyond due limits. For it is possible to discover some things with respect to coming rain, still more concerning heat and the force of the winds, whether partial or universal, stormy or gentle. But the great advantage that is rendered to life by these conjectures is known to every one. For it is of importance to the sailor to prognosticate the dangers of storms, to the traveler the changes of the weather, to the husbandmen the abundant supply of his fruits.

BEDE; But lest any of the people should allege their ignorance of the prophetical books as a reason why they could not discern the courses of the times, He carefully adds, And why even of yourselves judge you not what is right, showing them that although unlearned they might still by their natural ability discern Him, who did works such as none other man did, to be above man, and to be God, and that therefore after the injustice of this world, the just judgment of the creation would come.

ORIGEN; But had it not been implanted in our nature to judge what is right, our Lord would never have said this.

CHRYS. It seems to me that He is speaking of the present judges, and of the way to the present judgment, and of the prison of this world. And he shows that His officers are the angels, of whom he says, The angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just, and shall cast them into the furnace of fire; but it is added, I tell you, you shall not depart thence till you have paid the very last mite. For as they who pay money on interest do not get rid of the debt of interest before that the amount of the whole principal is paid even up to the least sum in every kind of payment, so by the compensation of love and the other acts, or by each particular kind of satisfaction the punishment of sin is canceled.

ORIGEN; Or else, He here introduces four characters, the adversary, the magistrate the officer, and the judge. But with Matthew the character of the magistrate is left out, and instead of the officer a servant is introduced. They differ also in that the one has written a farthing , the other a mite, but each has called it the last. Now we say that all men have present with them two angels, a bad one who encourages them to wicked deeds, a good one who persuades all that is best. Now the former, our adversary whenever we sin rejoices, knowing that he has an occasion for exaltations and boasting with the prince of the world, who sent him. But in the Greek, "the adversary" is written with the article, to signify that he is one out of many, seeing that each individual is under the ruler of his nation. Give diligence then that you may be delivered from your adversary, or from the ruler to whom the adversary drags you, by having wisdom, justice, fortitude, and temperance. But if you have given diligence, let it be in Him who says, I am the life, otherwise the adversary will hale you to the judge. Now he says, hale, to point out that they are forced unwillingly to condemnation. But I know no other judge but our Lord Jesus Christ who delivers to the officer. Each of us have our own officers; the officers exercise rule over us, if we owe any thing. If I paid every man every thing, I come to the of officers and answer with a fearless heart, "I owe them nothing." But if I am a debtor, the officer will cast me into prison, nor will he suffer me to go out from thence until I have paid every debt. For the officer has no power to let me off even a farthing. He who forgave one debtor five hundred pence and another fifty, was the Lord, but the exactor is not the master, but one appointed by the master to demand the debts. But the last mite he calls slight and small, for our sins are either heavy or slight. Happy then is he who sin not, and next in happiness he who has sinned slightly. Even among slight sins there is diversity, otherwise he would not say until he has paid the last mite. For if he owes a little, he shall not come out till he pays the last mite. But he who has been guilty of a great debt, will have endless ages for his payment.

BEDE; Or else, our adversary in the way is the word of God, which opposes our carnal desires in this life; from which he is delivered who is subject to its precepts. Else he will be delivered to the judge, for of contempt of God's word the sinner will be accounted guilty in the judgment of the judge. The judge will deliver him to the officer, that is, the evil spirit for punishment. He will then be cast into prison, that is, to hell, where because he will ever have to pay the penalty by suffering, but never by paying it obtain pardon, he will never come out from thence, but with that most terrible serpent the devil, will expiate everlasting punishment.

According to the 1962 Missal of Bl. John XXIII the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, today is the feast of St. Evaristus, one of the first popes and the successor of St. Clement. Pope Evaristus governed the Church from 97 to about 107. He was buried at the Vatican.


St. Evaristus
The episcopate of Evaristus began in the third year of Emperor Trajan's reign. Sources refer to him as a Greek from Antioch, the son of a Jew named Juda from Bethlehem. The exact length of his reign has been disputed by historians, as have been the authenticity of his letters and decretals; however, early scholars credit Evaristus with dividing Rome into specific parishes and with ordaining fifteen bishops, seven priests, and two deacons. Lack of historical evidence for these acts, though, would make them questionable.

In his first epistle addressed to the bishops of Africa, Evaristus decreed that seven deacons were to monitor a bishop's preaching, to ensure that he did not lapse from the true teachings. Evaristus did not wish to see undue accusations aimed at his bishops, yet reserved solely to the See of Rome the power to terminate any bishop as a result of this indiscretion. His second epistle drew a comparison between the lasting bond of husband and wife and that of a bishop and his diocese. Fragments of certain documents bearing his name have been proved to be forgeries, and therefore the validity of his epistles is doubtful. Evaristus did, however, live long enough to see the beginning of the Antonine dynasty.

According to Church tradition, he died a martyr and was buried near St. Peter on the Vatican Hill, but again, there is no reliable evidence to support this.

Meditation: Ephesians 4:1-6

29th Week in Ordinary Time

“… striving to preserve the unity of the Spirit.” (Ephesians 4:3)

Unity is hard to describe. Expressed in music, it occurs when every note is in harmony. In poli­tics, it comes about through debate and compromise. And expressed mathematically, as in today’s read­ing, it is expressed in a number: one Lord, one faith, one baptism. This is the unity Paul exhorts the Church to pursue at all costs. And as Christian history shows us, unity is both pre­cious and rare!

Most people want to experi­ence real unity—especially in their families. After all, who enjoys divi­sion and rejection? Who likes being separated and isolated from other people? The question is: How do we get there? Today’s reading is a good place to start. “With all humility and gentleness, with patience, bear­ing with one another through love,” Paul says (Ephesians 4:2).

So unity requires humility. Understanding that other people are just as important and just as beloved of God as we are is vital. Our fallen nature likes to think of the world revolving around us—but it really doesn’t. The devil also tries to convince us to push to get our own way, or at least to have the last word. But humility seeks to build up other people and to make sure their voices are heard and their con­cerns are acknowledged.

Paul also urges us to be patient and to bear with each other in love. He knows that unity takes time. It must be cultivated and maintained. Few things bring about unity more powerfully than the decision to sac­rifice our own agenda for the good of another.

Finally, Paul gives us the most important key to unity: the Trinity. One Spirit … One Lord … One God. How does their unity look? Jesus obeys the Father. The Holy Spirit speaks the words of Jesus to us. The Father glorifies the Son. Each Person honors the others before himself. If we want an envi­ronment of unity, we can start by contributing to an environment of honor. We can look to each other’s needs before our own, reverencing the beauty that God has created in them.

Clearly, it takes work to bring people together. But it’s well worth it—because it’s at the heart of our life in Christ!

My very dear Mother [Jeanne-Françoise], sixty years ago
you gave yourself to Jesus crucified,
saying to Him: Suscipe me, Domine;
that is: "Receive me, Lord,
take me with you on the Cross;
unite me to your sacrifice to the Father;
make of me a single offering
delivered unto the fire of the Holy Spirit
upon the altar of your Heart."

And the Lord answered you:
"I receive you as my spouse:
all that is mine shall henceforth be yours;
I am taking you with me into all my mysteries.
With you I will share my great Passion;
With you I will share my deep wounds;
With you I will share my shedding of blood,
my death suffered in all bitterness,
my descent into Hell,
my awaking on the morning of the Resurrection,
my Face all illumined by the face of the Father,
my ascension to His right hand in glory,
and my hidden, humble, silent life in the Sacrament of my love.
All this is yours because you are mine,
and nothing will ever separate you from my love."

Sixty years ago as well you spoke to the Father, saying:
Fiat mihi secundum Verbum tuum.
And forty years ago, you explained to me
one day at the Priory of St. Paul
that you insisted that the word Verbum in your motto
be written with the capital letter.
By this you wished to signify that,
as a spouse of Jesus crucified,
you wished to be conformed to Him,
made like unto the Word,
to receive in yourself the ineradicable imprint of his holy Face,
that is, of his Face fully turned to the Father,
of his sorrowful Face,
and of his glorious Face.
Surely the mystery of the Face of Christ,
the mystery of his holy Face,
dwells at the heart of the vocation of every spouse of Jesus crucified.

And this countenance is revealed to us today
in the First Reading, drawn from the Song of the Servant,
or, if you will, from the Passion of Jesus Christ according to the prophet Isaiah.
"And the Lord was pleased to bruise him in infirmity."
Fiat mihi, you say, secundum Verbum tuum.
--May it be done unto me as was done to the Word.
And Isaiah continues, saying:
"He laid down his life in expiation for sin."
And there too, as a spouse of Jesus crucified,
you are obliged to respond:
"May it be done unto me as was done
in thy Word, to thy Word, and for thy Word."

Expiation is nothing other than reparation,
and what is reparation if not Love that repairs,
Love that repairs the wounds of sin;
Love that makes pure what was soiled;
Love that gives beauty to what evil has deformed;
Love that gives the fullness of life to souls
that the world, and the flesh, and the Enemy are dragging toward death.
Your conformation to Jesus crucified has opened you, Mother,
to the mystery of a great supernatural fruitfulness.
So often you have prayed:
"Lord, I surrender myself to the power of your fruitful love."
Every mother receives life within herself to bring it into the world,
and then, having brought life into the world,
she dispenses her life day after day, hour after hour,
with every beat of her heart,
because the work of a mother goes on until death, and beyond death.
Your heaven, Mother, will not at all be rest,
because you will have work to do on the earth:
in your family, in your Congregation, and in me.

You must not be shocked, dear Sisters,
that the Lord repeated to his spouse
the words that he had said first in relation to his mother beside the Cross:
"Woman, behold your son"; and then, "Behold your mother."
Jesus has called you to spousal union and to motherhood.
He himself did not come to be served, but to serve.
You, as spouse and as mother, have not come to be served, but to serve.
He gave his life in ransom for the multitude,
and you could do no differently,
for the life given to the mother is given to be shared,
to be dispensed, to be handed on by love.

Mother, we have known each other for forty years.
When I saw you for the first time,
you were 49 years old, and I was 21.
Today you have sixty years of consecrated life, spousal life,
and I have just 60 years of life in all.
I allow myself to see in this a sign of the providence of God.
It is as though your life and mine
-- your life as spouse and mother,
and my life as a priest --
were braided together by a virginal hand
and by the will of an immaculate Heart, that of Mary, Mediatrix of all graces.

So it is together, not just you and I, mother and son, Host and priest,
but we, united with all those around us,
with Nanou, with Zizon, with Thérèse, and Florence,
united with your sisters in community,
united with all who are not here,
and united with all who have gone before us in death,
that we offer the Holy Sacrifice today.

The Grace of Things Unplanned

Recently, I was led to think about the significance of surprises or, if you will, the grace of things unplanned and unforeseen. Having persevered this far in monastic life, I can, I think, begin to identify some of the pitfalls inherent to it. One of these is the compulsion to want to control every detail, to leave nothing unplanned, and to strive to tidy up what is a messy business, that is, life with others here below.

The desire for the tranquility of order is virtuous and praiseworthy. But, like all virtuous and praiseworthy things, it becomes unbalanced and vicious when carried to an extreme. The conventual routine of monastic observance is made for monks, not monks for the conventual routine of monastic observance.

Surprises as Intrusions

With the passing years, one becomes more aware of one's weakness, one begins to feel in one's bones the increased fatigue that is the price of fidelity. Patience and good humour seem to be in shorter supply than when one was young and adventurous. One begins to view surprises as intrusions. One begins to resent the unexpected, and to fear the unknown. One's capacity for delight in things spontaneous and unplanned gives way to a dour refusal to adapt, to change, and to bend.

The Trellis

A certain stiffness sets in, not only in one's joints and bones, but also in one's thinking and in a kind of desperate clinging to the pathetic security of little rules and customs. The very things that were designed to serve as a light trellis to support the wild vine of life and keep its fruits from rotting on the ground become more important than the vine and its fruit.

Holy Abandonment

It is helpful, I think, to consider that God allows surprises, that He sends us things unplanned and unforeseen as graces to keep us flexible and supple in His hands. Father de Caussade's abandonment to Divine Providence extends to all of those things that catch us by surprise, that oblige us to revise our plans, and release our grip on the rails we have created our own security.

And All Shall Be Well

There is a fine line between the preservation of order and peace and the petrification of routine and the paralysis of fear. Without falling into an unreasonable cult of spontaneity and the culture of indiscipline and disorder in the name of openness and creativity, one must be humble enough to allow God to be God, always and everywhere. Surprises are salutary. Things unforeseen put us in our rightful place. And, in the end, as Dame Julian of Norwich said, "All shall be well."

Reflection

• The Gospel today presents the call on the part of Jesus to learn to read the Signs of the Times. This was the text which inspired Pope John XXIII to invoke the Church to be more attentive to the signs of the times and to perceive better the calls of God in the events of the history of humanity.

• Luke 12, 54-55: Everybody knows how to interpret the face of the earth and of the sky… “When you see a cloud looming up in the west you say at once that rain is coming, and so it does. And when the wind is from the south you say it’s going to be hot and it is”. Jesus reports a universal human experience. Every body and each one, in his own country or region, knows how to read the face of the sky and of the earth. The body itself understands when there is threat of rain or when the time begins to change: “It will rain”. Jesus refers to the contemplation of nature since it is one of the most important sources of knowledge and of experience which he himself had of God. It was the contemplation of nature that helped to discover new aspects in faith and in the history of his people. For example, rain which falls on the good and the bad, and the sun which rises on the upright and on the unjust, helped him to formulate one of the revolutionary messages: “Love your enemies!” (Mt 5, 43-45).

• Luke 12, 56-57: …, but they do not know how to read the signs of the time. And Jesus draws the conclusion for his contemporaries and for all of us: “Hypocrites!” You know how to interpret the face of the earth and the sky. How is it you do not know how to interpret these times? Why not judge for yourselves what is upright? Saint Augustine said that nature, creation, is the first book that God wrote. Through nature, God speaks to us. Sin mixes up the letters of the book of nature and, because of this we have not succeeded in reading God’s message printed in the things of nature and in the facts of life. The bible is the second book of God, it was written not to occupy or substitute Life but to help us to interpret nature and life and to learn again to discover the calls of God in the facts of life. “Why not judge for yourselves what is upright?” Sharing among ourselves what we see in nature, we will be able to discover God’s call in life.

• Luke 12, 58-59: To know how to draw lessons for life. “When you are going to court with your opponent , make an effort to settle with him on the way, or he may drag you before the judge and the judge hand you over to the officer and the officer have you thrown into prison I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the very last penny”. One of the points on which Jesus insists most is reconciliation. At that time there were many tensions and conflicts among the radical groups which had different tendencies, without dialogue: Zealots, Essenes, Pharisees, Sadducees, and Herodians… No one wanted to give in before others. The words of Jesus on reconciliation which require acceptance and understanding enlighten this situation; because the only sin which God does not forgive is our lack of forgiveness toward others (Mt 6, 14). This is why he advices to seek reconciliation before it is too late! When the time of judgment comes, it will be too late. When there is still time try to change life, behaviour and way of thinking and seek to act justly (cf. Mt 5, 25-26; Col 3,13; Ep 4, 32; Mk 11, 25).

Personal questions

• Read the signs of the times. When I listen or read the news on TV or in the newspaper am I concerned to perceive the calls of God in these facts?

• Reconciliation, to be reconciled is the most insistent request of Jesus. Do I try to collaborate in reconciliation between persons, the races, the people, the tendencies?

Concluding prayer

To Yahweh belong the earth and all it contains,

the world and all who live there;

it is he who laid its foundations on the seas,

on the flowing waters fixed it firm. (Ps 24,1-2)

You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky; why do you not know how to interpret the present time? Why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? If you are to go with your opponent before a magistrate, make an effort to settle the matter on the way; otherwise your opponent will turn you over to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the constable, and the constable throw you into prison. I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last penny."

Introductory Prayer: Lord, I believe that you are here with me. I have come to honor and adore you. Your love sustains me. I want to love you more in return.

Petition: Lord, allow me to comprehend your providence more deeply.

1. Seeing Signs: Jesus expresses some indignation with the spiritual obtuseness of his listeners; in other words, they don’t get it! When it comes to earthly matters, they can put two and two together in an almost infallible manner. A dim dullness, however, has the upper hand when the spiritual realm is broached. Why? Possibly because they were not bothering to ponder what the sign of Jesus’ presence, miracles and words really meant. They remained on the superficial level without plumbing the depths. Superficiality inhibits our own spiritual progress as well. Seeing signs isn’t so much a matter of being able to pick out the shape of a tabernacle or cross in a passing cloud, but of deep and prayerful consideration of the love of God in our lives.

2. God’s Presence: People who live a life of consistent prayer are much more in tune with God’s presence. Where others see coincidence, they see providence. This gives them a profound sense of peace. They know that God is in charge and that they don’t have to figure out everything for themselves. The world doesn’t rest on their shoulders, but on God’s. So instead of complaining or worrying, they live in an atmosphere of trust and acceptance.

3. Paying Attention: God’s providence guides all things. We know this through faith and sometimes he sends a sign to say, “Yes, I’m indeed here.” Once a Legionary priest was driving down the road in Virginia and his thoughts were taken up with a difficulty he was having with a particular person. “How should I handle this,” he asked himself. A car pulled out in front of him. Virginia is known for its high number of vanity license plates, and this one left him scratching his head. The license plate read “CARITAS”, which is Latin for “charity.” Was it just a coincidence? He couldn’t deny that this was the answer he was looking for. The signs that invite us to be more Christ-like are the ones to which we need to pay the most attention.

Conversation with Christ: Lord, the times I really don’t pick up on the signs you send me are when they challenge my resistance to your grace. Help me to overcome my spiritual superficiality and perceive your presence in my life.

Resolution: I will try to be prompt in following the inspirations of the Holy Spirit.

DISMEMBERING

 
"There is but one body and one Spirit, just as there is but one hope given all of you by your call. There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all." —Ephesians 4:4-6
 

The division of the Christian Church into thousands of denominations is directly opposed to God's will. Jesus prays that we would all be one as He and the Father are one (Jn 17:21). Yet we have resigned ourselves to this scandal of division for hundreds of years. We have become accustomed to Christians' willful disobedience to God. We feel helpless to do anything about our divisions. At best, we pray sporadically that the Lord may miraculously intervene and restore unity to His Church.

We must do more than pray. Unity has its origin in the Spirit but is preserved by our efforts (Eph 4:3). We must "make every effort" (Eph 4:3) "to live a life worthy of the calling" (Eph 4:1) we have received, "with perfect humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another lovingly" (Eph 4:2). Are we making "every effort" if we don't even talk or pray with our "separated brethren"? Are we as concerned about this problem as if our fingers, hands, or arms were cut off from our bodies? Will we tolerate the dismembering of Christ's body or will we do something?

The Lord is doing something about the condition of His Body. Seek His will and obey Him.

 
Prayer: Father, I'm sorry for my part in breaking up Your family by sin and apathy. Forgive me.
Promise: "He shall receive a blessing from the Lord, a reward from God his Savior. Such is the race that seeks for Him, that seeks the face of the God of Jacob." —Ps 24:5-6
