US Bishops to Consider Document Inviting Catholics to Regular Confession

At their fall meeting in Baltimore, members of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) will consider whether to approve a brief document inviting Catholics “to return to regular celebration of the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation,” according to a USCCB press release.

That means the priests are going to have to get out there and into the confessionals for more than 30 minutes once a week...

I think you’ve stumbled upon the problem. The growing priest shortage is going to mean this overwhelms them if even a sizeable minority takes them up on the invite.

We have five priests at my parish. They simply don’t want to do it.

Priests would be much happier if they went back to doing the things priests used to do (hear confessions, celebrate mass, etc.). Our priests fight each other not to have to say the morning mass, the sick are visited by little old lady “Eucharistic ministers,” and the confessional is in use exactly once a week - by only one of them.
