Redefining Deviance: The Gay Assault on Franciscan University
Crisis Magazine ^ | 11/13/12 | Anne Hendershott

The success that the gay community has achieved in shedding the “deviant” label has relied upon convincing the heterosexual world that homosexual behavior is perfectly normal. The recent uproar over a social work course titled “Deviant Behavior” at Franciscan University of Steubenville—which lists homosexuality as a form of deviant behavior—demonstrates just how vigilant the gay community remains in confronting anyone who might suggest that homosexual behavior could be anything but normal. It also shows how difficult it is for faithful Catholic institutions to teach students what the Church says about the nature of homosexual acts.

The dispute at the Steubenville, Ohio university emerged when two graduates —both members of the Franciscan Gay Alumni and Allies Facebook group—issued a press release complaining about the course description, which lists homosexuality as a form of deviant behavior. The group has demanded that the university revise its course descriptions “to stop contributing to the culture of hate and ignorance.” According to press reports, the alumni also encouraged other Facebook group members to contact the social work accrediting agency to investigate the matter and to contact the university. In an interview with National Public Radio, Stephen Holloway, the director of the office of accreditation at the Council on Social Work Education, said the course description was a matter of concern. “The fact that homosexuality was identified in the course description as deviant behavior raises a flag,” said Holloway. “Understanding diversity and difference and their dynamics in society [are] critical for social workers to be effective in working with diverse populations.” The Council’s Commission for Diversity and Social and Economic Justice houses a council on sexual orientation and gender identity which works for the “full participation of individuals who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or two-spirit in social work education.” Further, the Council requires that social........

I have friends that teach there - never been there myself, but you know if they are inviting flak they must be over the target!

Before Obama Term II is over they will likely have to join Grove City and Hillsdale in eschewing Federal student aid programs.

This is so true. Years ago, when libraries had card catalogues, the activists began their campaign to rid the indexes of topic headings that referred to their vices by scrubbing of the files of any listings that labeled their proclivities as deviant or perverse.

...homosexuality as a form of deviant behavior.

Is it not?

It IS deviant. Speaking the Truth is a very dangerous, very courageous undertaking. Always has been.

Two-spirit? Whoa .. now there's a new one that I hadn't heard of yet.

Anybody have any idea of what THIS is?

And Christendom College in Front Royal VA, the only Catholic college on the very short list of colleges and universities to do so.

There are approximately a half dozen truly Catholic colleges in the USA, including Franciscan in Steubenville, Christendom, Thoimas Aquinas in CA, and several others. Christendom is the only one that eschews Federal student aid programs. (My oldest son is a sophomore there, and it is an excellent school.)

There they go with the "culture of hate and ignorance" bit again, as if the lack of ignorance precludes the disgust one might feel toward their perversion.

As far as hate goes, one need not hate someone who has a shoe fetish, even though they acknowledge it is a deviant behaviour.

Bottom line: Homosexuality isn't normal, and knowing more about it isn't about to convince anyone it is.

Any man that gets excited looking at another man’s azz is a deviant, sick, perverted, mentally ill individual.

They may be accepted by people with weak minds and people who are related to them, but they are the butt of jokes to mentally healthy people.

When the first abortion clinic opened for business in Downtown Pittsburgh in 1973, students from Franciscan U. were here to protest outside it.

And they have been back doing the very same every Saturday morning since 1973!

FIRST: All us non-deviants should stop abusing a perfectly good word “gay” that these perverts have co opted. We start our debates from behind (no pun intended, oh maybe) by constantly letting the wordsmiths on the left frame the terms of the debate.

They are homosexuals by definition of their perversion.

If the non-deviants want to use something other than homosexual then use SSAD (Same Sex Attraction Disorder). It is way more appropriate and descriptive than the inappropriate use of the word gay.

Yes, Franciscan U. is a very good truly Catholic school with good faithful students. My daughter wants to go there. We are fortunate to live equidistant from both Steubenville and Christendom.

What is two-spirit? I too asked this question as I read the article. Is it like having multiple personality disorder. One person a man the other a women in the same body. Therefore entitled to have two spouses, one for each personality. Or perhaps, if the originally Male body has two spirits one of which is a bisexual (entitled to both a wife and a husband) while the other is a Lesbian, (entititled to a wife.) that would be three spouses or perhaps more if each spouse were also two-spirited. This could get very complicated.......

May I recommend that we even avoid the sanitized clinical term “homosexual” and return to “sodomites.” The former confuses those with mere attractions with those who are active; the latter clearly focuses on the disgusting activity.

That goes for heteros who engage in unnatural, sterile sex, too. Which would be --- as I understand it --- most.

How I mourn for our brokenness.

How I long to be immersed in sacredess, beauty, holiness, love.
